Thanks also go to Theo de Raadt, Claudio Jeker, Henning Brauer, and everyone else at the OpenBSD network hackathons who helped me through this. iii Abstract The OpenBSD UNIX-like operating system has developed several technologies that make it useful in the role of an IP router and packet filtering firewall. These technologies include support for several standard routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF, a high performance stateful IP packet filter called pf, shared IP address and fail-over support with CARP (Common Address Redundancy Protocol), and a protocol called pfsync for synchronisation of the firewalls state with firewalls over a network link. These technologies together allow the deployment of two or more computers to provide redundant and highly available routers on a network. However, when performing stateful filtering of the TCP protocol with pf, the routers must be configured in an active-passive configuration due to the current semantics of pfsync. -

APPENDIX A Compiling Your Own Perl Compiling Perl on a Unix-like system is simple. First, obtain the source for Perl from CPAN (dppl6++_l]j*lanh*knc+on_+NA=@IA*dpih). Then input the following sequence of commands: p]nvtrblanh)1*4*4*p]n*cv _`lanh)1*4*4 od?kjbecqna)`ao i]ga i]gapaop oq`ki]gaejop]hh On most Unix systems, this code will result in your lanh being installed into the +qon+ hk_]h+ directory tree. If you want it installed elsewhere—for example, in the local directory in your home directory—then replace od?kjbecqna)`a with the following: od?kjbecqna)`ao)@lnabet9z+hk_]h+ which should enable you to install Perl on your computer without root access. Note that the )`ao flag uses all the default options for compiling Perl. If you know that you want nonstandard configuration, just use the flag )`a instead to be prompted for your requirements. Be aware that the source for Perl 5.10.0 requires a patch to work properly with Catalyst. This is fixed in subsequent versions of Perl 5.10. 4 Implementation At this point, you should have a clear operational policy that governs how your users may make use of network services. You should also have good network monitoring tools installed and collecting data, so you can tell at a glance pre- cisely how your network is actually being used. With these major components in place, you are now ready to make changes to the network configuration that bring actual utilisation in line with policy. The implementation phase of net- work building closes the feedback loop that allows policy to be consulted upon and revised, and network services to be implemented and changed, based on information provided by the monitoring systems. This chapter will show you the essential technical components that should be in place in virtually every network connected to the Internet. These techniques will allow you to limit, prioritise, and optimise the flow of information between the Internet and your users. While these technical constraints are necessary to maintain the health of the network, there is one management technique that is often overlooked, yet nearly always makes the greatest impact on network utilisation: communica- tion with your users. If your users don't understand that their actions directly impact the performance of the network, how can they be expected to know that the network is overutilised and not "just broken?" When users are frustrated with network performance, and met with indifference (or outright contempt) by network administrators, they tend to try to find ways around the rules in order to "get their work done." More often than not, these workarounds will consume even more bandwidth, causing problems for users and administrators alike. -
