Smoke Detectors
Smoke Detectors Smoke detectors are devices that are mounted on the wall or ceiling and automatically sound a warning when they sense smoke or other products of combustion. When people are warned early enough about a fire, they can escape before it spreads. Facts Every year thousands of people die from fires in the home. Fire kills an estimated 4,000 American every year. Another 30,000 people are seriously injured by fire each year. Property damage from fire costs us at least $11.2 billion yearly. Most fire victims feel that fire would "never happen to them." Although we like to feel safe at home, about two-thirds of our nation's fire deaths happen in the victim's own home. The home is where we are at the greatest risk and where we must take the most precautions. Most deaths occur from inhaling smoke or poisonous gases, not from the flames. Most fatal fires occur in residential buildings between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. when occupants are more likely to be asleep. More than 90 percent of fire deaths in buildings occur in residential dwellings. Types of Smoke Detectors There are two basic types of smoke detectors: 1. Ionization Detectors The ionization detector is the most common type in use and generally less expensive to purchase at $5 to $20. They contain radioactive material that ionizes the air, making an electrical path. When smoke enters, the smoke molecules attach themselves to the ions. The change in electric current flow triggers the alarm. The radioactive material is called americium. -

Colin Linden – Blow Biography
Colin Linden – bLOW Biography “Got a coin in my pocket heavy and gold/It don’t own me I need to let it go/Cause having is wanting/Desire can make you weep” – “bLOW” Colin Linden’s tale is the stuff of legend, the kind told in the Coen brothers’ O Brother Where Art Thou or Inside Llewyn Davis, both of which featured his guitar playing on the soundtracks. That film would begin with an 11-year-old meeting his musical idol Howlin’ Wolf at a matinee show in his native Toronto, accompanied by his mom, who took a picture of the two during a nearly two-hour long conversation before the gig, the legendary bluesman idling over coffee and cigarettes. “I’m an old man now, and I won’t be around much longer,” Wolf told him. “It’s up to you to carry it on.” Linden still carries that frayed photograph in his wallet, along with a Sears 5/8” socket wrench in his pocket to play slide guitar. He has taken Wolf’s plea seriously, performing since he was 12 years old, leaving home as a teenager to travel the south at the invitation of Mississippi Sheiks delta blues guitarist Sam Chatmon which took him to Detroit, Chicago, Indianapolis, St. Louis, Memphis and Hollandale, Mississippi, meeting and visiting the sites of his heroes – Brownie McGhee, Muddy Waters, Sippie Wallace, Tampa Red, Blind John Davis, the Rev. Robert Wilkins, Sleepy John Estes and Son House, visiting the landmarks and juke joints, many of which he’s played in during the course of a 45-year career producing and playing blues and roots music. -

Spectrum History W. Visuals
1980 – 2020 Celebrating 40 Years! Spectrum A&E Media 1980-2020 Celebrating 40 Years! Spectrum Productions was established in 1980 in Regina, Saskatchewan to provide multimedia resources for organizations working with students in Canada. A board of committed friends sacrificially stood behind Keith and Jenny Martin to help raise support and give direction to the work. Spectrum’s Roots The roots of Spectrum go back to 1970, when Keith, having graduated with a B.A. in psychology and a minor in philosophy from the University of Regina, spent time at L’Abri Fellowship in Switzerland. L’Abri was and still is a live-in student community founded by Francis and Edith Schaeffer to explore answers to basic philosophical questions from a Christian worldview. 2 In 1971 Keith, Steve Archer and Art Pearson applied for and received a federal Opportunities For Youth grant for a summer project called Street Level: A Multimedia Culture Probe. Inspired by seeing 2100 Productions in the United States, they wanted to do something similar in Canada. With a budget of $8,800 they hired 8 students (Keith, Steve, Art, Gene Haas, Chris Molnar, Steve and Lorne Seibert, and Linda McArdell—and Henry Friesen for the presentation phase) at $1,000 each for 3 months of work. That left $800, and lots of borrowed eQuipment, to produce a 5-screen, 7-projector 80 minute multi-media presentation using contemporary music to look at what people were living for. 3 Some of the artists used in the production were Pink Floyd, Simon & Garfunkle, Strawbs, STREET LEVEL Steppenwolf, Leonard Cohen, Cat Stevens, Moody Soundtrack (1971) Blues, Traffic, Chicago, Procol Harem, Black “Careful With That Axe, Eugene” - Pink Floyd (Ummagumma) “At the Zoo” - Simon & Garfunkle (Bookends) “I’ve Got a Story” - Gary Wright (Extraction) Sabbath, King Crimson, and Ford Theatre. -

Christianity & the Arts, Wi
Christianity & the Arts, Winter 2000 The Magazine Christianity & the Arts Online Winter 2000 Homecoming Lyrics of Canadian Songwriter Bruce Cockburn By Brian Walsh At home in the darkness but hungry for dawn . Forgetfulness is the temptation of homelessness. Elie Wiesel puts it this way: "The one who forgets to come back has forgotten the home he or she came from and where he or she is going. Ultimately, one might say that the opposite of home is not distance but forgetfulness. One who forgets, forgets everything, including the roads leading homeward." This relation of home and memory is, of course, not alien to the Scriptures. Indeed, it is precisely forgetfulness that is seen to occasion the homelessness of exile, and it is memory that keeps the vision of homecoming alive while in exile. "Don't forget where you have come from, who led you out of slavery and who gave you this bountiful land," says Deuteronomy 8, lest you go into exile. And when exile does befall forgetful Israel, it is memory of Yahweh's past faithfulness - memories of Abraham and Sarah, Noah, David, indeed of creation and exodus - that funds the prophetic imagination and keeps alive the vision of homecoming. If home is a place of deeply rooted memories, then homelessness is a state of amnesia in which we forget who we are precisely because we forget where we come from. And as long as the amnesia holds, there is no way back, no homecoming. The themes of home, homelessness, and homecoming, together with the motif of memory, are ubiquitous in the lyrics of Canadian songwriter and performer, Bruce Cockburn. -
LIVERPOOL of the NORTH”: the STORY of OTTAWA, CANADA’S MUSIC, 1960’S–TODAY
“LIVERPOOL OF THE NORTH”: THE STORY OF OTTAWA, CANADA’s MUSIC, 1960’s–TODAY. EXCERPTS FROM ALAN CHRISMAN’S BOOK: “IT’S A LONG WAY HOME” Ottawa had quite the music scene in the 60’s. Part of this was because Canada and Ottawa had more direct connections to England than the U.S., so they knew about The Beatles before the rest of North America. And their 60’s bands, were very adept at re-creating that British pop sound. In fact, Richie Patterson, a mainstay and drummer in many of its bands, called Ottawa the “Liverpool of The North”. Ritchie went to Fisher Park school with Paul Anka, backing him up in the Bobbysoxers. Anka was one of the first to make it out of Ottawa and become a teen sensation with “Diana” and “Puppy Love” in the 50’s, before moving to Vegas and writing “My Way” for Frank Sinatra. Richie’s “The Esquires” were first influenced by Cliff Richard and the Shadows right before The Beatles took over. Scores of Ottawa bands formed and recorded songs and some albums. There were several places to play like the Auditorium, Pineland and clubs like the Chaudiere across the river in in Hull, Quebec and several church basements. And hundreds of kids would attend. Ottawa even had its own version of American Bandstand, Saturday Date, hosted by Peter Jennings who would go to ABC News in New York. The best of these got recording contracts like The Staccato’s (who later became The Five Man Electrical Band) when they moved to California with their international hits “ Signs” ( ‘Signs Signs ,everywhere, telling me what to do’) and The Cooper Bros. -
