The opening of Resorts World Casino New York City, com- plete with 2,285 video slot machines and 200 electronic table games in its Times Square Casino, brought South Ozone Park to life in late October as gamblers poured in from through- out the region to play in New York City’s first casino. The gaming revenues are expected to breathe new life into the downstate racing industry. Because of political roadblocks and assorted shenanigans, much of it fueled by ingrained, deep-seated animosity toward the New York Racing Asso- ciation, Aqueduct was the last racing entity to receive gam- ing devices overseen by the New York Lottery. The Aqueduct opening came exactly one year after ground- breaking for the facility, which will cost close to $1-billion, and one day short of ten years after the New York General Assembly approved racetrack gaming in the aftermath of the Adam Coglianese/NYRA photo September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on New York City’s World AQUEDUCT RACINO OPENED ON OCTOBER 28 Trade Center.
