We were still just children, but we already had Vietnam to think about. The evening news was a body count. At camp, we didn’t see the news, but we listened to Eric Burdon and the Animals’ Sky Pilot while doing our beadwork with Father Pekarski. Pekarski looked like Grandpa from The Munsters. He was bald with a scowl and a growl, wearing shorts and an official camp tee shirt over his pot belly. The local legend was that at night, before going out to do his vampire thing, he would come in and mix up your beads so that the red ones were in the blue box, and the black ones were in the white box. Then, he would twist the thread on your bead loom a hundred and twenty times so that it would be impossible to work with the next day. And laugh. A Beautiful Day For A Walk For a change of pace (no pun intended), the 2014 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes© event was held a week later than previous years. In order to accommodate an event at the Cenotaph, we altered the walk route from once around Victoria Park to going north of the park, around the Richmond/Pall Mall/Wellington block and returning to Centennial Hall. This added a bit more wear and tear on the feet of London’s League of Extraordinary Gentlemen but they still had fun and returned smiling. Even though the day started with some rain, by mid- morning the sun had appeared and it turned out to be a perfect day for a Walk. At least 100 walkers, and double that in well-wishers, took to the streets in the sunshine and warm temperatures to raise money for Women’s Community House and to show community solidarity to end violence against women. Upon return to Centennial Hall, everyone enjoyed complimentary refreshments and award presentations. This year’s Shoe-per-Hero award was presented to Al Murphy, the individual who raised the most money and the Shoe-be-do Trophy for the team that raised the most in pledges was awarded to Team Bluestone. At the time of writing this article, the total monies raised from the 2014 Walk a Mile in Her Shoes© was approximately $33,000 with further pledges expected to be received. Gavin’s Woodpile – The Bruce Cockburn Newsletter Edited by Daniel Keebler Issue Number 55 February 2003 The Bruce Cockburn back catalogue - The Deluxe Editions Observations by Richard Hoare The first batch of six CDs were released in late 2002: Canada - True North – 19th November 2002. USA - Rounder/True North - 19th November 2002. UK - True North via Revolver - 16th December 2002. All these CDs have been digitally remastered by Peter J Moore @ The E Room, Toronto, 2002. The original analogue masters have been digitally transferred using a proprietary state of the art Ampex ATR 102 at 24 bits / 96Khz resolution and processed using Sonic Solutions NoNoise technology. The deluxe editions are distinguished externally from the previous CD releases by the inclusion of O card slipcases. Each CD booklet attempts to reproduce the artwork and information from the relevant original LP release plus additional photography and an essay. In 1997 Nicholas Jenning’s book Before The Goldrush was released in Canada. It documents the musical breeding ground that was Yorkville, Toronto in the 1960s. The equivalent of Greenwich Village, New York or Haight Ashbury, San Francisco it fostered such talents as Ian & Sylvia, Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young, Kensington Market, Murray McLauchlan and Bruce Cockburn. Although currently out of print, it is essential reading. Nicholas has put together a wonderful jigsaw, which illustrates how each of the artists fitted into the scene. The text is also supplemented by a wealth of great photographs, album sleeves, posters, flyers etc. My favourite is the photo of Bernie Finkelstein outside El Patio with Kensington Market, the band he launched with the payout from Albert Grossman for The Paupers. -

Over the years these musical staged events, with a strong visual dimension, have attracted media producers, especially film-makers. Monterey featured career-making performances by Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, and Otis Redding, but they were just a few among a wildly diverse cast that included Simon and Garfunkel, the Mamas and the Papas, the Who, the Byrds, Hugh Masekela, and the extraordinary Ravi Shankar. With his characteristic vérité style, D. A. Pennebaker captured it all, immortalizing moments that have become legend: Pete Townshend destroying his guitar, Jimi Hendrix burning his.
