BSEPVATIONS Windmills Again he United Student Government: so much trouble for so little work. TTrue last year; true once again. President Robert Picistrelli, whether guilty or innocent of the charges leveled at him, has effectively self- destructed as a leader, due to the doubts about him among his colleagues and constituents. Meanwhile, the USG, operating without him until his suspension from office terminates at the end of February, has begun a cam- paign not to find out the truth about their president, but to paint Assis- tant Dean of Students Normand Parenteau as a scapegoat for all the controversy. The USG, at the January 28 meeting, decided to appeal to Assistant Vice President for Student Affairs Fr. Denis Moran, S.J. to nullify Parenteau's suspension order, claiming that Parenteau has no authority to remove a USG executive. The meeting was closed to students, press, Parenteau himself (a USG ex officio member and the club's adviser), and the USG Judiciary. So much for accountability. With an agenda that still includes submitting its club budget, completing the student survey, and discussing Picistrelli's guilt or innocence, the USG is instead spending all its efforts to remove from Parenteau the authority given to him by the University. While last year's USG was all appearance and no substance, this year's USG is no appearance and no substance. Now, with an agenda of real issues, the USG is chasing after windmills. Picistrelli's neutralization as a leader need not have hobbled the USG. But as Picistrelli's probationary suspension as USG president has drawn attention to the ineffective job the USG has done all year, it has also detoured the USG from rectifying that situation. The USG's sidetracking reaction to Picistrelli's case ensures that progress won't occur this semester. A curse on both their houses. By Robert Dunne

In the early 60s, there was the doomsday film Fail Safe and its comic relative £)V. Strnngelove. in which both depicted modern-day chaos in the' board rooms of government. Last year, the Film version of Orwell's 1984 was released, which showed the chaos of the future through the eyes of a man in the street character, Winston Smith. Now 1984 has its comic companion, in Brazil, which is viciously satiric, very warped, yetjull of laughs. It's hard to describe what the convoluted plot is, but on a bare-bones level it's about yet another man in the street of anti-Utopia (Jonathan Pryce), who frantically searches for the embodiment of his wishful dreams —a woman deemed an enemy of the state. But helping and obstructing his quest are numerous, weird, satiric exaggerations of present- day modern life. Terrorism is so common an oc- currence that it goes unnoticed, whether in restaurants or shopping malls; television screens can be found everywhere; living and working quarters are virtual cubicles; and practically'every business and social activity is bogged down by hav- ing to fill out forms. Not much is new in Brazil; if you've read or seen 1984, then you'll recognize a lot here: a common man pursuing a nonconformist, the TV screens, pneumatic tubes, overall decay of society, and Big- Brother type posters. From this current pairing of like films, you'll think back to the two doomsday films of 1964, and how similar they were in details.
