Costume designer Fotini Dimou clothed over 700 actors in total for the two hour adaptation but before she could think about army uniforms and extras, her first task was to imagine what the lead character, Anthony Hopkins and his quarrelling daughters, Emma Thompson, Emily Watson and Florence Pugh might choose to wear in director Richard Eyre’s modern London setting. Some of the locations evoked the old world, others the new, and I had to come up with modern yet romantic costumes to inhabit these extraordinary spaces and visually tie everything together”.     “THIS IS SPARTA!” DISCOURSE, GENDER, AND THE ORIENT IN ZACK SNYDER’S 300 Jeroen Lauwers, Marieke Dhont and Xanne Huybrecht Zack Snyder’s 2006 film 300, which is based on Frank Miller’s 1998 graphic novel,1 tells the heroic story of the Spartan king Leonidas and his three hundred men. Because Leonidas is forbidden by the oracle and her priests from leading the Spartan army against the mighty Persian god-king Xerxes, he decides to head north himself with a “personal bodyguard” of three hundred of his finest men. This relatively small number of soldiers, joined by an auxiliary Arcadian force, holds the countless number of Persian soldiers back for no fewer than three days. Meanwhile in Sparta, Queen Gorgo works to have the Spartans send additional men to Thermopylae to rescue her husband and his Three Hundred, but her efforts are thwarted by the treason of the politician Theron.2 Ever since the movie’s release, critical and popular opinions have advanced many different perspectives. A rather large number of people have found diverse reasons for considering 300 offensive. One aspect of this critique revolves around its so-called homophobia,3 for example, in the scene in which Leonidas arrogantly calls the Athenians “those phi- losophers and boy-lovers.” Others vituperate the movie for its supposed fascist ideals, pointing out uncanny parallels between the Spartan society and the “Third Reich”: the extreme nationalism, the mutual equality of the Spartiates and their superiority to the helots, the (primitive) genetic selec- tion, and considering women as breeding machines for an ideal fighting 1 The movie quite strictly follows the design and the perspective of the graphic novel.

Every generation has its hero. William Wilberforce (1759 – 1833) was a very gifted statesman, a social reformer, a philanthropist and an evangelical Christian. As well as working to bring about the end of the slave trade, and then to abolish slavery itself, he was concerned about mistreatment of animals (he was a founder member of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, later to become the RSPCA), education, the social impact of heavy gin drinking, and the need for missionaries in various parts of the world, including India and Africa (he was a founder of the Church Missionary Society and the British and Foreign Bible Society). Amazing Grace is the most honored and recorded song of all time. Amazon.com lists some 2000 currently available recordings of Amazing Grace. Nothing else comes remotely close. It crosses all lines—from classical to country, from rock to traditional folk. It is permanently ingrained in the culture. No other song has enjoyed such diverse rendering. He headed the parliamentary campaign against the British slave trade for 26 years until the passage of the Slave Trade Act 1807, when Parliament passed a bill to abolish the slave trade. (The film’s release is a way of marking the bicentennial of that event.) Some years later, just three days before Wilberforce’s death, slavery itself was completely abolished in Britain. Part of his epitaph in Westminster Abbey reads: In the prosecution of these objects he relied, not in vain, on God.

Exciting newcomer Nicholas Ralph will make his television debut as the iconic vet who became renowned for his inspiring compassion, humour and love of life.
