Jacob Gallery is pleased to announce its upcoming exhibition Susan Unterberg: A Retrospective, on display from November 11- December 16, 2005. New York artist Susan Unterberg creates photographs that correspond to the rhythms of life, discovery and change. From the early charged portraits of mothers and daughters to the playful and painterly exploration of horse and fish, this exhibition follows Unterberg’s closely intertwined personal journey and artistic production. While Unterberg typically organizes her work according to discrete photographic series, this exhibition combines selections from over twenty years of such projects and unites them for the first time in one exhibition. This retrospective approach enables the audience to trace Unterberg’s formal development over ten principal series and to study the multivalent and interwoven themes that recur throughout her work. Susan Unterberg has exhibited extensively throughout the world, most notably at the New Museum of Contemporary Art, the International Center of Photography, The Jewish Museum, New York, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art and the Metropolitan Museum of Art. We are very excited to now have Unterberg’s work her in Detroit at Wayne State University. There will be an opening reception taking place on Friday, November 11 from 5-8pm in the gallery, which is free and open to the public. The Elaine L. November 18, 2020—Anonymous Was A Woman today announced the ten recipients of its 2020 awards, which recognize women-identifying artists over 40 years of age who have made significant contributions, while continuing to create new work, and who are each at a critical juncture in their practice. Each recipient receives an unrestricted award of $25,000. This marks the award’s 25th year, with more than $6 million awarded to 250 artists since 1996. The 2020 award recipients are: D.Y. Begay, 67 Linda Goode Bryant, 71 Barbara Chase-Riboud, 81 Elena Del Rivero, 71 Chitra Ganesh, 45 Karen Gunderson, 77 Virginia Jaramillo, 81 Claudia Joskowicz, 52 Karyn Olivier, 52 Juana Valdés, 56 Winners were chosen from among a competitive pool of applicants recommended by a group of distinguished art historians, curators, writers, and artists who serve as anonymous nominators. The 2020 award recipients range in age from 45 to 81, and work in mediums including painting, installation, performance, photography, film, and social practice. The “no strings-attached” award is intended to provide them freedom to continue development of their creative vision. Bios of each recipient follow. Anonymous Was a Woman was founded by artist Susan Unterberg in 1996. In 2018, after more than two decades of anonymity, Unterberg revealed her identity as the founder and sole patron of the award program.

Susan Unterberg Is Announced As Founder and Donor
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Patron and founder of award program Anonymous Was A Woman reveals her identity Artist Susan Unterberg, who has anonymously given over $5.5 million in unrestricted grants to 220 women artists over the age of 40 through Anonymous Was A Woman, introduces a new chapter for the program July 20, 2018—Today, Susan Unterberg, a New York-based artist, revealed her identity as the founder and sole patron of the grant program Anonymous Was A Woman. Each year for the past 22 years, Anonymous Was A Woman has awarded unrestricted grants of $25,000 to ten under-recognized women artists over the age of 40, distributing over $5.5 million to 220 artists to date. Unterberg chose to come forward after over two decades of anonymity in order to serve as a more vocal advocate for women artists, to underscore the urgency for women to support women in the art world and beyond, and to provide a model for other philanthropists. The revelation ushers in a more public chapter for Anonymous Was A Woman. Unterberg founded Anonymous Was A Woman in 1996 in response to the National Endowment for the Arts’ decision to cease support for individual artists and in recognition of the challenges faced by women artists, particularly those in the middle stages of their careers. Each year, a group of distinguished women—curators from institutions including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Brooklyn Museum, and New Museum; art writers; and previous winners—serve as anonymous nominators and panelists. The Award has often had a transformative impact on the lives and work of the recipients, many of whom received the grant at critical junctions in their careers or before they had received wider recognition.

FJC QUARTERLY Volume 23, Issue 4 January 2019 ANONYMOUS WAS A WOMAN Anonymous Was a Woman is an awards program for women artists over the age of 40 that started in 1996 and has paid out a total of $5.8 million to 230 artists. The intention of the grant is to encourage women artists over 40 to continue their work despite the often uneven treatment and pay between men and women in the art world. The fund name is “in reference to a line in Virginia Woolf’s ‘A Room of One’s Own,’ to pay tribute to female artists in history who signed their paintings ‘Anonymous’ so that their work would be taken seriously.” The donor behind the grant, Susan Unterberg, was anonymous until last summer, when the program was profiled by the New York Times. She worried that her funding of the grant may impact the way in which she or her art was perceived. Now, “she has decided to come forward so that she can more openly argue on behalf of women who are artists, demonstrate the importance of women supporting women, and try to inspire other philanthropists.” “Ms. Unterberg, 77, is based in New York, and has had her photographic work in a few major museum collections — including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Museum of Modern Art and the Jewish Museum — and she had a career retrospective at the Contemporary Arts Center in Cincinnati in 2004. But she said she has experienced firsthand the hurdles faced by female artists all over the world. “They don’t get museum shows as often as men, they don’t command the same prices in the art world,” she said.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE SUSAN UNTERBERG PISCES April 29 - May 28, 2004 The Yancey Richardson Gallery is pleased to present Pisces, an exhibition of large- scale color photographs by Susan Unterberg. These brilliantly colored abstractions were made by photographing close to the surface of a koi pond where the rapid movements of fish, water and bouncing light created an ever changing display. As in her previous series, each of which explores a different subject and approach, the work in Pisces is about looking acutely at the world and the transcendence of reality. As Unterberg explains, "The evanescent moment of beauty, the dissolution of a realistic subject into sudden abstraction – this phenomenon fascinates me. My current series of fish pictures is a metaphor for the fleeting nature of being in which nothing stays the same for longer than a moment." In Pisces, Unterberg captures the ephemeral nature of light and water, ripples, bubbles and color to create painterly abstractions of great formal beauty and poetic meditations on the ephemeral moment. Susan Unterberg's work has been collected by such major museums as the Museum of Modern Art, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. She has been exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the New Museum and the Jewish Museum among others. In November 2004 Unterberg will be the subject of a mid-career retrospective at the Contemporary Arts Center, Cincinnati, to be accompanied by a catalog.
