Sacramento being a significant distance from my home institution of UC Irvine, the dissertation was composed primarily in a number of coffee shops, in nearly every corner of the Sacramento State University Library, and occasionally in my car parked in a driveway or along the curb of a quiet street. My choice to “write-up” away from my campus meant that I missed out on some elements of the process that I can now say should not be undervalued – above all, an office that is not carried on one’s back, and an embodied (as opposed to “virtual”) intellectual community. That said, I think that this experience made me even more appreciative of the numerous sources of support I received from many people along the way. I will begin with some exceptional colleagues and friends who, despite lack of physical proximity, did indeed make me feel like I had a community during the dissertation writing process. In this regard, I thank especially Sean Mallin and Taylor Nelms, with whom I shared many draft versions of chapters of this dissertation and many fruitful conversations about them. Sean and Taylor always gave generously of their time and insights to help me improve and continue pushing forward with my work. Caitlin Fouratt also provided helpful comments and suggestions on chapters contained herein; I am further grateful for her invaluable support and advice about parenthood during fieldwork and as a junior scholar. But I would add as well that their dedicated efforts – whether as community leaders, as activists, as census personnel, or as policymakers and civil servants – gave me the inspiration I needed to push forward even at times when this process was at its most trying. I thank all of you who welcomed, and shared your insights, frustrations, and hopes, with a young gringo researcher who in more than a few cases had simply cold-called you or just showed up at your office door. I could not possibly go without singling out three Costa Rican interlocutors in particular, even if two of them I identify only by pseudonyms. If they read this, they will know who they are. “Azalea” and “Alfredo” were collaborators who exceeded every expectation I had of potential interlocutors in state institutions. Both bring levels of intellect, enthusiasm, resilience, and humility to their work that should impress and inspire anyone interested in public service. I know they do me. And finally, Carlos Minott, to whom I have dedicated this work. Carlos was a man of great intelligence, integrity, wisdom, kindness, and humor. He set a truly special example through his belief that a better and more just world is possible, his tireless and principled work to bring that world into being, and the joy he took in others and in life until his passing in March 2014.

    WATER account WORKING PAPER MAY 2016 Acknowledgement This publication is the result of coordinated work between the Central Bank of Costa Rica (BCCR) and the Ministry of the Environment and Energy (MINAE), with support from the Wealth Accounting and the Valuation of Ecosystem Services (WAVES) initiative. WAVES is a World Bank-led global partnership that aims to promote sustainable development by ensuring that natural resources are mainstreamed in development planning and national economic accounts. This global partnership brings together a broad coalition of United Nations agencies, governments, international institutes, nongovernmental organizations and academics to implement Natural Capital Accounting (NCA) and develop approaches for other ecosystem service accounts. Costa Rica is one of the initial core implementing countries that embarked on programs for NCA endorsed at the highest level of their governments, with extensive technical support from WAVES. The technical guidance and advice from Ricardo Martínez-Lagunes (WAVES consultant) were key inputs for the compilation of the account. Suggestions from Michael Vardon (WAVES consultant) contributed to the final version. Country Steering Committee Costa Rica established a National Steering Committee (NSC), in order to mainstream NCA into policy making and support Environmental Accounts development.     OECD Food and Agricultural Reviews OECD Food and Agricultural Reviews Agricultural Policies in Costa Rica These reviews provide comprehensive assessments, according to different angles, of countries’ agricultural policies, including OECD estimates of the level of support; major reform efforts and their potential impacts; OECD Food and Agricultural Reviews or conduciveness of the broad policy framework to generating the innovation that will improve agricultural productivity sustainably. Costa Rica’s strong agricultural sector is underpinned by the country’s political stability, robust economic Agricultural Policies growth and high levels of human development. The sector has achieved signifi cant export success, yet raising productivity and staying competitive in world markets will require efforts to address bottlenecks in infrastructure, innovation and access to fi nancial services. Maximising Costa Rica’s comparative advantage in Costa Rica in higher-value niche products will depend upon more effi cient services to agriculture, including better implementation of programmes, improved co-ordination among institutions, and reduced bureaucracy. While overall protection for agriculture is relatively low compared to OECD countries, it is nonetheless highly distorting to production and trade. Managing the transition to scheduled liberalisation presents an opportunity to reform costly policies, and to implement an alternative policy package with new investments in innovation, productivity and diversifi cation, supported by transition assistance where needed. Costa Rican agriculture’s vulnerability to extreme weather events is expected to worsen with climate change, and even while the country is among global leaders in environmental protection, sustainable development and climate change mitigation, further adaptation efforts will be necessary. Puri3 Abstract Background: Indigenous populations are undergoing rapid ethnobiological, nutritional and socioeconomic transitions while being increasingly integrated into modernizing societies. To better understand the dynamics of these transitions, this article aims to characterize the cultural domain of food plants and analyze its relation with current day diets, and the local perceptions of changes given amongst the Ngäbe people of Southern Conte-Burica, Costa Rica, as production of food plants by its residents is hypothesized to be drastically in recession with an decreased local production in the area and new conservation and development paradigms being implemented. Methods: Extensive freelisting, interviews and workshops were used to collect the data from 72 participants on their knowledge of food plants, their current dietary practices and their perceptions of change in local foodways, while cultural domain analysis, descriptive statistical analyses and development of fundamental explanatory themes were employed to analyze the data. Results: Results show a food plants domain composed of 140 species, of which 85 % grow in the area, with a medium level of cultural consensus, and some age-based variation. Although many plants still grow in the area, in many key species a decrease on local production–even abandonment–was found, with much reduced cultivation areas. Yet, the domain appears to be largely theoretical, with little evidence of use; and the diet today is predominantly dependent on foods bought from the store (more than 50 % of basic ingredients), many of which were not salient or not even recognized as ‘food plants’ in freelists exercises.

El lugar tiene una población de 80566 habitantes con una densidad de 79 habitante/km². El análisis HJ-Biplot permitió identificar dos grupos distritos en función de su comportamiento en las variables de estudio. Las variables que presentaron mayor nivel de correlación entre ellas son: la población de habitantes, número de hogares y número de estudiantes de los distritos. Palabras claves: San Ramón; población; HJ-Biplot. Abstract Based on the data from the 2011 Costa Rican Population Census, this research study is a statistical evaluation of the socioeconomic status of the canton of San Ramon in the province of Alajuela, using HJ-Biplot. This canton has a population of 80566 inhabitants with a density of 79 inhabitants / km². The HJ-Biplot analysis identified two district groups based on their behavior of the study variables. The variables that show a higher level of correlation among them are: population, number of households and number of students in the districts.

[email protected] Lincoln Institute Product Code: WP13RP1SP Resumen Se generaron mapas consistentes de área construida en la región metropolitana de San José para los años 1986, 1997 y 2010 utilizando métodos de clasificación supervisada y no supervisada a imágenes satelitales del proyecto Landsat. A partir de ellos, los patrones regionales y municipales de área construida fueron descritos para la estructura y cambio de dichas áreas. La descripción se realizó por medio de índices que describen los niveles de dispersión del área construida (Angel et al., 2005; Burchfield, 2006). Los resultados revelaron que la región es más dispersa y menos densa que otras ciudades latinoamericanas, aunque el crecimiento del área construida ha sido más compacto que el conjunto del área construida del periodo inicial. Los niveles de dispersión del área construida y su crecimiento, por municipio, fueron relacionados, a través de un análisis econométrico, con potenciales determinantes explicativos. Se encontraron asociaciones estadísticamente significativas y consistentes con la teoría, entre distintos índices de dispersión y accesibilidad, existencia de recursos hidrogeológicos y población, así como con los cultivos predominantes.
