Look at Linfield l 04 Today we will face a huge test against a Crusaders team that is sure to be challenging for honours at the end of the season. They are a team packed with big game players who are sure to cause us problems today. We know this is a hugely important period in our season and while we are aware of excitement about upcoming games, we have not been looking beyond today’s immensely difficult challenge against Stephen Baxter’s highly talented squad. We were delighted with our recent wins against Cliftonville (1-0) and Warrenpoint (2-0) and I want to see us maintain this momentum and consistency with more positive performances and results. Our recent wins have been hard fought and well deserved but we are not getting carried away with our pleasing position at the top of the league table, as today’s game only brings us to the half way mark in our league schedule for the season. Kirk Millar will miss the second game in his three match suspension today, after his red card in the recent Cliftonville game. We will also be missing Gareth Deane, Niall Quinn and Mark Stafford today and our medical team are working hard to try and have them fit and available for action soon. On a more positive note, it was pleasing to welcome Jordan Stewart back to action last week in Warrenpoint and Daniel Kearns and Mark Haughey also made welcome returns to the subs bench, after long lay offs due to injury. In Mark’s case, it has been a very long absence of a season and a half, so getting him back in contention for a first team place has required a lot of hard work and patience from Mark and our medical team. I want to wish David Dorrian, his staff and Linfield Swifts’ players every success for the Christmas morning Steel and Sons Cup final against Newington at Seaview. It’s a prestigious occasion in front of an anticipated large crowd and the game will be a great learning experience for our talented young players. If we could win this very special trophy, it would be a major boost for everyone at the club, so the staff and players go into the game with the very best wishes of everyone at the club. It’s a busy and costly period for our supporters who I know have been buying tickets for the upcoming Glentoran, Coleraine and Steel Cup Final games but it’s today’s huge challenge that has been focusing all of our attention and we will need all our supporters fully behind all of our players today, to drive us on to the positive result we all want. In closing, can I take this opportunity to wish all of our supporters, players, staff and directors a very Merry Christmas. We will be doing all that we can on the pitch to make it as happy and blue a Christmas as possible.

Look at Linfield l 06 infield defender Josh Robinson has recently returned to action following a six- month injury lay-off and the 26 year-old told ‘Look at Linfield’ earlier this week that he’s delighted to be back involved in the thick of things. L“I am feeling sharp now, it’s been a long time coming. I like to be involved playing and it was hard to sit on the sidelines watching. Hopefully now that I’m back, I am doing the job and giving something to the team. It was hard to watch the European run but the boys were brilliant! It just shows you how good the Irish League is. We were up against top Champions League, European teams, yet a couple of weeks later we got beat by Coleraine, so that just shows you that the Irish League is a great standard. I love playing in it, it’s a great league and it’s very tight this year which is good for the neutral.” Last week, goals from strikers Andy Waterworth and Shayne Lavery gave Linfield a 2-0 win away to Warrenpoint Town. Reflecting on the match, Robinson believes the two strikers getting on the score-sheet is a timely boost, ahead of three big games across the festive period. “I thought we played well. We showed a bit of character to go down to Warrenpoint, as big teams have lost there. Warrenpoint are able to raise their game for the big games, so we were happy to get over the line and get the three points. Our strikers hadn’t been scoring and it had been the back four popping up with the goals but last week, Shayne and Andy got amongst the goals which we were delighted with. They are going to play a big part in the big games coming up and hopefully, they’ll put the ball in the net when it matters.” Looking ahead, the former Crusaders and York City man was feeling positive. These next three fixtures could prove to be crucial in the title race and he has urged the Linfield support to play their part. “We have a big squad and that showed last week with the talent we had. Jordan Stewart is back from injury, along with Daniel Kearns and Mark Haughey. It’s good to have those boys back for the big games ahead. It’s all about attitude, we’ll be there fighting over the festive period, giving everything we’ve got and hopefully, results will follow.” “Boxing Day is massive and the fixture everyone puts in their calendar. We went there two years ago and got beat, so we’ll be looking to make it a better Boxing Day for the fans this year. It wasn’t nice to lose. That was my first Boxing Day game with Linfield — it wasn’t nice and hopefully, we can leave the Oval with a massive three points when it comes around, as well as staying on top. I honestly think it’s been quiet at Windsor recently, but it was bouncing for the European games. We hope the fans come out in their numbers and give us good support. We will need our support pushing us on, even when we’re under pressure.” Best wishes to Josh and his teammates ahead of the very important and exciting festive period which sees Linfield take on Crusaders, Glentoran and Coleraine all within the space of a week.

Look at Linfield l 11 by James Kennedy Lindsay Curry Just like many who went before him, Lindsay Curry trod the well-worn path from Northern to cross- channel football, signing for Manchester City at the age of 16. Brought up in Londonderry’s Fountain Estate, Lindsay played his early football at Templemore Primary School before the family moved to Ballymena. “There weren’t many teams in Londonderry that I could have played for, and it was when I went to Ballee High School that I first took the game seriously. I was a bit of a quiet man and let my football do the talking”. Coming to the notice of City scouts, Lindsay finished his schooling then headed for football-mad Manchester, where he hooked up with several famous names. “When I first went across the water I shared digs with Chris Coleman, who would later play Premier League football and manage Wales. But Chris didn’t settle and after about four months returned home.” The club at that time featured Mick McCarthy and Sammy McIlroy, while Neil Lennon was also slowly making his way in the game. “You’d have thought, with all these lads from Ireland at the club, I’d have been OK, but I must admit I was not enjoying living in a house with an old woman”. And, to make it worse, at a time when Lindsay was progressing through the ranks to 1 st Team football, injuries to both ankles struck. With too much free time on his hands, the homesick winger succumbed to some unhealthy off-field activities. “I wasn’t behaving, and the manager, Billy McNeill, was forever having a go at me. I made the 1 st Team squad a few times, but at a time when I should have been listening to the boss’ advice, I thought I knew better”. His spell in full time football over, Lindsay headed back home, where he was courted by Linfield.

Look at Linfield l 12 “I was invited to go to Haarlem for a youth tournament, but Ballymena offered me a really good deal and Holland was cancelled. We didn’t do badly in my time there, winning the Irish Cup final against Larne, having beaten Linfield in a semi-final !” Linfield came calling again for the Young Player of the Year in 1990, this time with Eric Bowyer at the helm in the wake of ’s departure, and 3 difficult seasons at Windsor Park followed. “The Blues paid a big transfer fee, and much was expected of me. Eric was a real gentleman, but he was left with the task of rebuilding an aging team, and we never really challenged for the league title. We lost the Irish Cup final in 1992 and he was soon on his way”. Trevor Anderson replaced Bowyer, winning the title in his first season. But, even then, there was no happy ending for Lindsay. “I missed a lot of games and was one short of qualifying for a medal. But the manager wouldn’t give me that extra game, and that left a sour taste”. The just-married Lindsay was on the move again soon after, this time to Larne. “Larne offered me a big signing-on fee which, with a young wife to look after, I couldn’t really turn down. I did well at Inver Park and was top scorer before moving back to Ballymena”. Injury was to play a part in Lindsay finishing with the senior game. “I got injured against Coleraine and that was it. I applied for my Amateur status to be reinstated so I could play for Carniny Rangers, and I took some coaching courses, getting halfway to the UEFA A qualification”. Son Ryan currently stars for Harryville Homers, having played for a while in the Linfield junior teams. “That’s how I pass my Saturdays now, watching Ryan. I work shifts, so it’s hard to commit to any regular involvement in the game, although I usually get a call to see if I’m available to manage one of the local teams every summer!”.

A collection was due to take place before today’s game in support of Tiny Life, the premature baby charity which is a proud patron of. Hopefully, supporters will give generously to this very worthwhile cause. Special guests at today’s Pre-match Christmas lunch in the Joe Bambrick suite in the South Stand are former players from the 1980s era Colin McCurdy and Warren Feeney Senior. Warren Junior is also likely to be in attendance as he’s on a winter break from his new role as manager of Bulgarian team OFC Pirin Blagoevgrad.

Obituaries Linfield FC records with sadness the passing of lifelong supporter Billy Carson on December 5 - peacefully at his home. The sympathy of everyone at Linfield is extended to his wife Ann, daughters Adele and Cheryl, son William and the wider family circle. A Service of Thanksgiving for Billy was held in The Peoples Church, Mallusk, Newtownabbey, on December 9 with interment afterwards in Ballyclare Cemetery. • Sympathy is also extended to the secretary of the Raven Linfield Supporters’ Club, George McCutcheon, whose father George Senior passed away recently.

Look at Linfield l 17 by Dan Brown The 2010s: a decade in review As the 1980s passed into the 1990s, Malcolm Brodie reflected in Ireland’s Saturday Night on a festive anomaly. The veteran journalist quipped: “let me end this last Soccer page of this decade with a little story of unity in Irish League football this year Glentoran, Linfield and Coleraine all selected the same Christmas card – and there was no collusion!” If the Christmas pattern he noted had proven somewhat odd, Brodie had earlier that year pointed to a much more obvious footballing pattern. After our players had lifted the 1988/89 League title, Brodie simply stated: “Linfield –team of the decade”. Brodie’s conclusion was an easy one to come to. Of the ten Gibson Cups lifted that decade, we lifted ten. With the 2010s about to give way to the 2020s, it is worth reflecting on what sort of decade we at the Park have enjoyed. As the decade began, we welcomed home one of our favourite sons. Peter Thompson initially returned on loan from Stockport, before later joining permanently again that summer. Upon his return Pistol shored up what had been an unconvincing season. Doing what he did best – scoring – Thompson spurred the club on to a fourth Double in five years. Incredibly more Doubles were to follow, two more to be precise. In the first three years of the decade ’s side lifted three Doubles in three years, to make it a staggering six Doubles in seven years. The sixth of those Doubles witnessed something supporters had not experienced since the late 1980s. That was a Linfield side without the number ‘11’ appearing on the team sheet. In 2011 Noel Bailie – one of the greatest players to pull on a blue shirt –

Look at Linfield l 18 retired. As Bailie moved on, his number ‘11’ shirt was also retired. Other club stalwarts would soon leave after Bailie’s departure. The 2012/13 campaign was a disappointing one with a third placed finish, well off the lead. In an effort to halt the obvious decline Jeffrey brought in a number of replacements for the likes of Winkie Murphy and Steven Douglas who moved on. Ahead of the 2013/14 season in came the likes of Matthew Clarke, Andrew Waterworth and Sean Ward, whilst Jimmy Callacher had arrived in the January of 2013. Jeffrey was shaping another very good Linfield side. However, it was one, which would again come up short. In March 2014, the club lifted what turned out to be Jeffrey’s last piece of silverware with the club in the guise of the Shield. Sadly a month later, we came up just short in the League. Cliftonville beat us to the title with a game to spare. The last day of the 2013/14 campaign was effectively a dead rubber match, but it was an occasion filled with emotion. A 5-2 victory over Glenavon saw David Jeffrey sign off as manager with a win and plenty of tears. Replacing Jeffrey was Warren Feeney. Within minutes of David leaving the pitch at Mourneview, Warren Feeney was announced as manager. Feeney promised much on arrival, but left a year and a half later without any trophies collected. Indeed after our 2014 Country Antrim Shield trophy success, we had to wait until 2017 for our next trophy. This arrived again in the form of the County Antrim Shield and represented current boss David Healy’s first trophy. Healy took over from Feeney in October 2015 and helped return the club to a position of strength. In David’s first season, he guided us to the Irish Cup final. Then in his second year he took the club to an incredible treble of the League, Irish Cup and County Antrim Shield. Another League and League Cup would follow in the season just gone, and then of course there were some unforgettable moments in Europe. At the start of the 2017/18 campaign, Healy led us against Celtic. Whilst in the summer of 2019 we had the most incredible European run, making it to within touching distance of the Europa League group stages. When you look back at the decade, five league titles, four Irish Cups and an incredible European Cup run. Not bad for a team that has been written off a number of times in those years.

Look at Linfield l 21 Crusaders Crues hoping for a positive result at ‘The Park’ today by Greg Braniff, Crusaders Programme Editor tephen Baxter’s side have made a disappointing start to the festive period after a rare home defeat to Ballymena United and an away Sdraw at Glentoran. Home clashes against Cliftonville (Boxing Day) and Dungannon Swifts (28th December) follow for the Shore Road side, with the games against the Blues and the Reds likely to have a massive bearing on the League Stephen Championship race. Baxter December is likely to be a defining month for all five title contenders with so many big games between all the top teams throughout the month and manager Stephen Baxter has spoken about the need to remain in contention at the top of the table throughout the hectic Christmas and New Year period, before making a final charge as the season enters its last few months. Crusaders travel to Windsor Park this afternoon in desperate need of a result. Stephen Baxter’s men are three points behind Linfield, and with Linfield having two games in hand, the Hatchetmen will not want to slip any further behind in the title race. As well as the League run in, the Crues have a lot to look forward to in the

Look at Linfield l 22 opening months of 2020, with the defence of the Irish Cup beginning Jamie on the 4th January with a home McGonigle game against Dundela, while the final of the League Cup against Coleraine is scheduled for the 15th February. The Crusaders line up today should include striker Jamie McGonigle who was named the NIFWA ‘Player of the Month’ for November. The young striker has settled in well at Seaview following his summer move from Coleraine, scoring 15 times already up until the game with Glentoran, with his haul including a series of spectacular long-range strikes. For today’s game manager Stephen Baxter will definitely be without midfielder Rory Hale who sustained a serious knee injury in the November win over Dungannon. He will be hoping that the rest of his squad will have come through the last few weeks unscathed and be available for selection today, with Jordan Owens facing a race to be fit for the visit to Windsor Park.

Special guest The club welcomes a special guest to today’s pre-match lunch and game against Crusaders. Billy Gilchrist was born In January 1925 and lived in the Mountcollyer area of North Belfast close to the home of today’s opponents. Billy has been a lifelong Linfield fan and among his favourite players are the Duke of Windsor, , Isaac Andrews, Harry Welsh, Don McMillan, who worked with him in the Belfast shipyard, Hugh Friel goalkeeper and part time cabaret artist, Bobby Braithwaite and Ray Gough. The 94 year old remains active and amazingly won a competition at Larne Golf Club when he was 92. He doesn’t get to Linfield games these days so we are delighted to welcome his to today’s game with his good friend Eric Dalzell and trust they will have an enjoyable day at Windsor Park.
