1 ABOUT THE NIJC HUMAN RIGHTS AWARDS

Since 2000, the National Immigrant Justice Center’s Human Rights Awards luncheon has honored human rights champions and celebrated the contributions of business, civic, and philanthropic leaders. The event draws more than 800 attendees and provides critical funding for NIJC to ensure that it can continue to promote human rights and access to justice for immigrants.

2017 KEYNOTE SPEAKER & JEANNE AND JOSEPH SULLIVAN AWARD RECIPIENT: REPRESENTATIVE ILHAN OMAR

Ilhan Omar is the newly elected, Minnesota House Representative for District 60B. She is the first Somali- American, Muslim woman in the nation to hold an office at this level.

Ilhan and her family fled from the Somali civil war and spent four years in a refugee camp in Kenya. Upon arriving in the in 1995, she spoke only Somali. Today, Ilhan is a talented organizer committed to advancing unity and justice, helping women entrepreneurs, pursuing criminal justice reform and ensuring clean air and water. Most recently, Ilhan served as the director of policy initiatives at Women Organizing Women and as a senior policy aide for

Lorie Shaull Minneapolis City Council Member Andrew Johnson.

Ilhan holds degrees in business administration, political science and international studies. She completed a policy fellowship at University Of Minnesota’s Humphrey School of Public Affairs. She has served on numerous nonprofit boards, including the Legal Rights Center, YMCA, Confederation of Somali Community of MN, and the DFL State Central Committee. She is currently the Vice president of the DFL Feminist Caucus. Ilhan has received multiple accolades and awards, including the Rising Star Award from DFL Women’s Hall of Fame. She has been featured in several news publications, including TIME, PEOPLE, NPR, and Al Jazeera.
