November 10, 2009

Dear Conference Participants,

On behalf of Chicago United, thank you for joining us at the 6th Annual Changing Color of Leadership Conference and Bridge Awards Dinner.

The mission of Chicago United – to develop sustainable diversity in corporate America – mirrors one of Harris Bank’s central goals. Our objective to create lasting diversity affects all aspects of our business, from our hiring decisions, to our support of non- profit organizations, to our investments in underserved communities.

The theme of this year’s conference, Leadership in a Transforming Economy, is especially meaningful for Harris. We know that to weather economic challenges and meet the evolving needs of our clients, we must cultivate a diverse, dynamic group of leaders who understand the complexities of our business and the communities where we operate. It’s good business, and it’s the right thing to do.

Congratulations to this year’s honorees for fostering economic inclusion and creating a stronger social and economic climate for all. When we promote an environment that encourages and appreciates each individual’s unique contributions, everyone benefits.

Sincerely,

Ellen Costello President and CEO Harris Bankcorp

Dear Conference Participants,

A conference of this depth of talent and content cannot be developed and delivered without the support of an active membership and many friends.

First, I would like to thank Jim Skogsbergh, chairman of the Chicago United Board of Directors, and all its members for their unwavering support. A great deal of gratitude to Ellen Costello, Michael Lewis and all our partners at Harris Bank for serving as presenting sponsor at this year’s conference. Enormous thanks to all of today’s sponsors and especially our Chairman’s Circle Sponsors for your extraordinary support.

Chicago United also appreciates the partnership with ABC 7 who has generously run public service promotions and lent the talents of Ravi Baichwal and Hosea Sanders.

We also appreciate the advertising support of Clear Channel Radio Chicago, Crain’s Chicago Business, the Tribune Company, Minority Business News USA and Women’s Business Development Center.

The Chicago Community Trust has become an invaluable supporter of Chicago United with grants supporting our James W. Compton Competition and BoardLink.

We extend a very special thanks to James Skogsbergh and Advocate Health Care for donating all of the printed materials related to this conference as well as production of the Bridge Awards Dinner video. Finally we thank each and every member of Chicago United for their personal and organizational resources to build the conference and support its mission.

David Rudd and the team at The Axis Agency have helped this organization achieve remarkable and invaluable media coverage surrounding the events of this year. Perika Sampson has helped to coalesce the diversity officers in the region at our Diversity Officer Roundtables and her work has been invaluable. We also acknowledge the vision of Doris Salomon in building the BoardLink profile and Angie Robinson for consulting with Chicago United on the Business Leaders of Color impact survey. Finally we acknowledge Judy Mathews, president of Community Interface, who has become the most versatile consultant and strategist imaginable and who is responsible for delivering the high quality program and workshops of this Changing Color of Leadership Conference.

Finally, the team at Chicago United is without a doubt the hardest working group ever assembled. I can only begin to express my personal appreciation to Sal Bayron, Teresa Sarna and Ana Souchet.

To all who made this conference a success, thank you!

Sincerely,

Gloria Castillo President

– 10 – Contributing Research

The James W. Compton Research Competition The Compton Research Competition supports the research and advocacy work of Chicago United. Graduate school students add to Chicago United’s body of research and bring national attention to the impact of diversity in corporate governance, executive management and business partnerships in major corporations. The research competition awards $5000 to the individual or team of scholars who submit the study judged to be most outstanding.

Linking Corporate and Civic Leaders

BoardLink BoardLink provides the business community a unique leadership development tool that allows emerging leaders of color access to opportunities to develop skills that will expand their managerial experience and build business networks. BoardLink also enables leading non-profit organizations to more easily engage Chicago’s leaders of color in places where they can impact the organization’s mission. BoardLink is an electronic referral source where leaders of color looking for board opportunities can post their availability and non-profit organizations in search of racially/ethically diverse board members can post their openings. Both groups have access to search listings, share information, and make a connection.

The Chicago United James W. Compton Research Competition and BoardLink programs are supported through donation from The Chicago Community Trust.

2:00 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. Workshops

Workshop IA Continental A Downsizing: Maintaining a Fair and Legal Racial Workforce Balance Recent data published by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) indicate an upward trend in job discrimination claims. In 2008, there was a 15 percent overall increase in claims with race discrimination accounting for 36 percent of all claims filed last year. While there are a number of variables impacting this upward trend, current economic conditions are playing a key role. This session will address reducing your risk associated with economic layoffs, incorporating diversity into your downsizing or restructuring strategy, and maintaining a fair and racially balanced workforce. Legal experts will review strategies for assessing and minimizing your risks, managing potential conflict and increasing your transparency during layoffs. Moderator: Stanley Stallworth, Partner, Sidley Austin, LLP Speakers: Joseph M. Gagliardo, Managing Partner, Laner, Muchin, Dombrow, Becker, Levin and Tominberg, Ltd. Young Kim, Administrative Judge, Equal Employment Opportunity Commission Elizabeth A. McDuffie,Gonzalez, Saggio & Harlan

Workshop IIA Continental B The Importance of Diversity in Good and Bad Times Moderator: Guy Summers, , President, Farrell Group LLC Speakers: Marjorie Paddock, Director of Diversity & Workplace Equity, Harris Denise Banks, HR Consulting Director, CNA Insurance Salvador Mendoza, Vice President, Diversity and Inclusion, Hyatt Corporation History has taught us that economic highs and lows move in cycles. During bad times corporations are quick to make cuts to line items that do not net immediate, tangible, financial benefits. During this session, industry experts will share strategies that address the important attributes of diversity and inclusion and the critical role they play in promoting employee engagement and boosting morale when a corporation is challenged by the economy. Standing on the shoulders of diversity, corporations can create an atmosphere of innovation that will contribute to talent development and long-term growth. Companies that continue to recruit, promote and develop a diverse talent pool will be more adaptable and more competitive when the economic trend begins to move upward.

Workshop IIIA Continental C Supplier Diversity: Keeping MBEs in the Game Moderator: James Williams, Business Diversity Manager, University of Chicago Medical Center Speakers: Jacquelyn M. Howard, U.S. Director, Senior Supply Chain Management, McDonalds USA LLC Leonard McLaughlin, President, Aon Cornerstone Innovative Solutions Donna Westerman, Director of Supplier Diversity & Social Responsibility, and Worldwide Procurement, Wm. Wrigley & Co. Minority-owned businesses play a critical role in contributing to the economic vitality of the U.S. economy, and are a major source of job creation in this country. Minority firms, however, are challenged in good and bad economic times. Limited access to key decision-makers has been a major barrier. Corporate supplier diversity strategies have become an important element in ensuring that minority business enterprises gain access to opportunities in order to thrive. This session will explore what strategies are being implemented by corporations to engage the minority business community.

– 12 – 3:30 p.m. – 3:45 p.m. Beverage Break Continental Foyer

3:45 p.m. – 5:15 p.m. Workshops

Workshop IB Continental A Diversity Matters: Ramping Up the Rate of Leadership Engagement Moderator: LaShana Jackson, Director of Diversity & Inclusion, Aon Corporation Speakers: Charmon Parker-Williams, President, Parker-Williams Consulting Robert Mendonsa, President, Small and Middle Markets, Aetna Carolyn Clift, Chief Diversity Officer, Health Care Service Corporation Strong leadership and commitment are critical components to the success of diversity initiatives. It is especially important during turbulent times for key corporate officers and team leaders to reiterate the reasons why diversity matters in a visible way, stay focused on the mission, vision and core values of the organization, and ramp up CEO engagement. These initiatives must remain top-of-mind in the C-suite. Aligning diversity with the strategic objectives of the organization will ensure preservation during economic highs and lows enabling organizations to forge ahead. This session will explore strategies for engaging and aligning senior leaders around sustainability, collaboration and innovation while continuing to yield shareholder value.

Workshop IIB Continental B The Multiracial Pipeline: Preserving Your Talent Investments Moderator: Angel Gomez, President, A.G. Gomez Consulting Speakers: Erin Barney, Director, Enterprise Talent Acquisition, Health Care Service Corporation Marguerite E. Durston, Administrator, Attorney Recruitment, Quarles & Brady Ana Dutra, Chief Executive Officer, Leadership and Talent Consulting, Korn/Ferry International Delta L. Triplett, Principal, Delta Triplett Inc. Although the business case for workforce diversity has been documented on many levels, recruitment and retention programs are being severely impacted by the economic crisis. Talent management strategies represent a significant investment in many industry segments. It has been noted that some industries invest as much as $1 billion per year on training and professional development programs and initiatives. This session will explore designing creative strategies that will continue to develop the multiracial talent pipeline despite economic attrition and making informed downsizing recommendations while retaining diverse assets. It will also challenge you to think more transformational and less transactional by capitalizing talent investments for long-term growth.

Workshop IIIB Continental C Developing Recession Resistant Business Models for MBEs Moderator: Darryl Tom, Partner, Gonzalez, Saggio & Harlan LLC Speakers: Martin L. King, President, MLK Corporation Albert Grace, President & COO, Loop Capital Manny Sanchez, Managing Partner, Sanchez, Daniels & Hoffman A business model is defined as a framework for creating economic, social and/or other forms of value. All businesses, large and small, are being challenged by the current economic conditions. Spending cuts and frozen financial markets, however, have further limited access to sources of capital for small firms. This session will help you to examine whether you are running your business in the most efficient manner and if it is time to rethink your business model in order to survive and thrive during economic highs and lows. It will also present strategic alliances as a means of cutting costs, monitoring key market indicators, and developing new product offerings and incentives.

A true shift towards diversity happens when it becomes second nature, part of the very fabric of who we are – both in front of the camera and, perhaps even more importantly, behind the scenes. In the television news business, it’s not enough to hire on-air staff and say, “now we’re diverse.” At ABC7, taking an inclusive approach to the people we hire leads to an inclusive approach to the stories we cover and the manner in which we present the news each day. It is the only way we can truly flourish, the only way we can forge that essential connection with our viewers.

– 114 – 2009 Business Leaders of Color

The biannual Business Leaders of Color publication profiles accomplished business leaders from the Chicago business landscape who add measurable value to their corporate enterprise. These individuals serve to inspire others as they ascend to leader- ship. While achieving personal success, they each contribute to the cultural, civic and educational life of our region.

The Business Leaders of Color publication was conceived through fierce discussion that has become a trademark of Chicago United. In 2001, Chicago United launched the Corporate Diversity Profile survey. The study, which occurs on an alternating bi-annual basis, was the first national survey of its kind to measure racial diversity, specifically, in leadership ranks, on corporate boards and in executive level management of large corporations. It serves as a benchmark for corporations to measure their progress in this area. When examined from a leadership perspective in regards to corporate governance and corporate executives, the study continually finds corporations visibly lacking in racial diversity in senior management. After the first study was conducted, Chicago United viewed the results as an opportunity to understand resistance to greater board diversity. The debate uncovered a widespread call for the need to identify diverse talent for the Fortune 100, 500, and 1000.

Chicago United’s leadership took action to create a highly visible publication that demonstrates the level of diverse talent available in Chicago and, in 2003, produced the firstBusiness Leaders of Color publication.

The individual Business Leaders of Color symbolize the significant benefits that await us as we strive to fully embrace inclusion. By supporting inclusion, we support Chicago as a great global business center and as a great place for each of us to work and live. As we move forward, the Business Leaders of Color publication is considered a resource for diverse talent. But more importantly, it serves as inspiration, as was envisioned by Chicago United thought leaders, to those seeking to increase inclusion of diverse candidates in their boardrooms and business networks.

Chicago United is committed to showcasing diverse talent through our publications, our Race and Business Forums, and during the Changing Color of Leadership Conference.

– 115 – Partners in the Arts

Now in its 23rd season, the Chicago Sinfonietta has enriched the cultural and educational quality of life in Chicago since 1987, while gaining significant recognition on the national and international stage. The Sinfonietta is the most diverse orchestra in the country employing more musicians of color than any other ensemble.

The orchestra performs subscription seasons at Symphony Center in downtown Chicago and at Lund Auditorium in River Forest. Under Founding Music Director Paul Freeman, the Sinfonietta has earned a reputation for innovative programming that attracts underserved and new audiences. Over forty percent of the subscribers and single ticket buyers are people of color.

The Sinfonietta has recently been recognized for its work of championing diversity and inclusiveness in classical music by receiving the Wallace Foundation’s Award of Excellence, one of only nine Chicago arts organizations chosen, a National Endowment for the Arts Stimulus grant, one of only two Illinois orchestras to receive this support, and by the World Diversity Leadership Summit as their Global Diversity in the Arts award recipient. In addition, the Chicago Sinfonietta has produced fourteen CDs, has embarked on six European tours, and has performed twice at the JFK Center for the Performing Arts.

– 116 – Bridge Awards Introduction

2009 CHICAGO UNITED BRIDGE AWARDS

The Bridge Award represents the first national award that honors CEOs who are advocates for multiracial diversity in corporate governance. In keeping with the spirit of our advocacy in support of the development of multiracial participation at all levels in business, these awards brings visibility to those who have driven change and have inspired others to follow.

Chicago United (CU) established the Bridge Awards during its inaugural Changing Color of Leadership Conference in November of 2004. The award celebrates the ac- complishments of chief executive officers of publicly held corporations who have inspired and supported diversity on their board of directors. The award also recognizes their corporation’s commitment to diversity in senior level management and business partnerships among diverse firms.

After conducting a rigorous examination of publicly available company data, CU reviewed five national and five Chicago-based companies with diverse boards of directors based on a specific threshold of diverse board member participation. The National Bridge Award serves to honor the exemplary practices of a Fortune 500 corporation. The Chicago Bridge Award serves to honor a corporation supporting the development of a vibrant and richly diverse business community in the Chicago region. Each company was evaluated on quantitative and qualitative data by an internal and external committee. The committees consisted of corporate and non- profit executives, entrepreneurs and academicians, and were selected based on their neutrality and experience. The committees were provided with rating/rank- ing criteria and a cumulative point system for the award selection process.

The Bridge Advocate Award celebrates the accomplishments of a public- or private- sector citizen who actively recognizes the importance of diversity to our country’s economy and global competitiveness. The recipient must have demonstrated, through meritorious public or private sector service, successful strategies for stimulating and promoting inclusion in public or private sector governance, workforces and business partnerships; and their efforts to leverage their position to continue to elevate the discussion of inclusion.

We applaud the 2009 Bridge Award recipients for being true champions for diversity in governance, management, and business partnerships. Your leadership, vision, and commitment will continue to foster innovative approaches to achieving diversity in corporate governance throughout the business community.

– 117 – At Altria, our people make their best decisions when they consider a variety of perspectives. That includes diversity – of race, gender, background and professional experience. The importance of how we go about it is clearly stated in our mission and values.

We know it’s important to attract, develop and retain diverse employees – at all levels. We accomplish this by creating an environment where people can contribute through collaborative processes to make the most of their talents and ideas.”

Michael E. Szymanczyk

– 118 – 2009 Chicago United National Bridge Award Recipient

MICHAEL E. SZYMANCZYK Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Altria Group, Inc.

Michael E. Szymanczyk is chairman and chief executive officer of Altria Group, Inc., a position he has held since March 2008. Altria directly or indirectly owns 100 percent of each of Philip Morris USA, U.S. Smoke- less Tobacco Company, John Middleton Co., Ste. Michelle Wine Estates and Philip Morris Capital Corporation. In addition, Altria holds a continuing economic and voting interest in SABMiller plc. Under Mr. Szymanczyk’s leadership, Altria delivered 2008 net revenues of $19.4 billion. Altria’s stable of strong brands, together with a proven ability of growing and adapting in a changing industry, have resulted in sustained financial performance and a record of reliable return for its shareholders. Mr. Szymanczyk joined Philip Morris USA in 1990 as senior vice president of sales. He held a number of executive positions at Philip Morris USA and was appointed chairman, president and CEO of that company in 2002. Previously, he had extensive consumer products experience in sales and marketing at Procter & Gamble and Kraft. Mr. Szymanczyk maintains that the toughest businesses require the best people, and that, in the end, success comes from applying good judgment to good ideas. It’s his opinion that a diverse organization inherently has more of both. Altria and its family of companies have a rich history of diversity and inclusion. Three decades before civil rights became law, Philip Morris USA voluntarily integrated its work- force despite subsequent boycotts in the south. Philip Morris USA made its first corporate donation in the mid-1950s to the United Negro College Fund, and the company went on to provide substantial and regular contributions to a host of diverse, civic-oriented non- profits. In 1970, the company’s brand became the first corporate sponsor of women’s tennis, enabling the sport’s first professional tour and some much-deserved parity with men’s tennis. Philip Morris USA was a founding member of the Thurgood Marshall College Fund in 1987, and Altria was a founding member of the Hispanic Association on Corporate Responsibility’s Young Hispanic Corporate Achievers Program. In recent years, Altria earned DiversityInc.’s recognition for “Top Ten Companies for Supplier Diversity,” and was ranked by DiversityInc. as one of the “Top 10 Companies for African-Americans” and as a company that values diversity. Mr. Szymanczyk currently serves on several boards of trustees including: The University of Richmond, The United Negro College Fund and The Richmond Performing Arts Center. Mr. Szymanczyk received a bachelor’s degree in finance from Indiana University in 1971.

The following companies have committed to Chicago United’s Five Forward Initiative:

Advocate Health Care Ernst & Young McDonald’s Corporation USA LLC Aon Corporation Harris Bank Merrill Lynch Ariel Investments Health Care Service Corporation Mesirow Financial Bank of America (Blue Cross Blue Shield of Illinois) Rush University Medical Center Baxter International Jewel-Osco SD.I (System Development. Benchmarking Progress CORPORATE DIVERSITY PROFILE The Chicago United Corporate Diversity Profile is a bi-annual survey that measures racial diversity specifically in the leadership ranks of large corporations, on corporate boards and in executive level management. It serves as a benchmark for corporations to measure their progress in this area. Large corporations have grown increasingly successful at diversity and inclusion within their employment ranks. Yet, the study consistently highlights the need to expand the pool of minorities available for leadership positions which begins by growing diverse talent in the leadership pipeline. The next survey will take place in 2010.

Connecting Corporate Networks DIVERSTITY OFFICER ROUNDTABLES The Diversity Officers Roundtables include diversity professionals from Chicago-area corporations who meet with Chicago United to continue a dialogue based on the recom- mendations of the Corporate Diversity Profile. According to the 2009 series, despite the economic downturn, there is a keener interest in sustaining the overall gains made by increased diversity and inclusion, and improvement goals remain uncompromised and are increasingly aligned with market share and revenue goals despite mergers and senior leadership changes. The series participants agree that now is the most important time to build strong diversity and inclusion practices. Despite the underperforming economy, diversity leads to improved employee retention, increased creativity and innovation, new ideas and sensitivity to diverse client and customer preferences. When leveraged appropriately, diversity and inclusion will help companies contribute to the economic vitality of the areas in which it conducts business.
