The three-fold increase in the total num- ber of species covered in the current compilation is the result of both a larger study area and a recent increase in published ontogenetic studies of fishes by many authors and students of the morphology of early stages of marine fishes. It is a tribute to the efforts of those authors that the ontogeny of greater than 70% of species known from the western North Atlantic Ocean is now well described. ST.AUBIN Department of Pathology Ontario Veterinary College University of Guefph Guelph, Ontario Canada INTRODUCTION Parasites of marine mammals have been the focus of numerous reports dealing with taxonomy, distribution and ecology (Defyamure, 1955). Descriptions of associated tissue damage are also available, with attempts to link severity of disease with morbidity and mortality of individuals and populations. This paper is not intended to duplicate that Iiterature. Instead we focus on those organisms which we perceive to be pathogenic, while tempering some of the more exaggerated int~~retations. We deal with life cycles by emphasizing unusual adap~t~ons of selected organisms, and have neces- sarily limited our selection of the literature to highlight that theme. For this discussion we address the parasites of cetaceans---baleen whales (mysticetes), and toothed whales, dolphins and porpoises (odon- tocetes): pinnipeds-true seals (phocidsf, fur seals and sea Iions (otariidsf and walruses (adobenids); sirenians~anatees and dugongs, and the djminutive sea otter. ECTOPARASITES We use the term “ectoparasite’” loosely, when referring to organisms ranging from algae to fish which somehow cling to the surface of a marine mammal, and whose mode of attachment, feeding behavior, and relationship with the host or transport animal are sufficiently obscure that the term parasite cannot be excluded. What is clear is that these organisms damage the integument in some way. For example: a whale entering the coid waters of the Antarctic can acquire a yelIow film over its body. Blue whales so discoiored are known as “sulfur bottoms”. -

In marine habitats, 965 species (plus two introduced) are found, with the Labridae, Serranidae and Gobiidae being the largest families; 56.7 % of these species live in shallow coral reefs, 33.7 % inside the fringing reef, 28.0 % in shallow rocky reefs, 16.8 % on sand bottoms, 14.0 % in deep reefs, 11.9 % on the reef flat, and 11.1 % in estuaries. 63 species are first records for Réunion. Zoogeographically, 65 % of the fish fauna have a widespread Indo-Pacific distribution, while only 2.6 % are Mascarene endemics, and 0.7 % Réunion endemics. CBP/TRS 164/97 EPA 903R -97-004 A Comprehensive List of Chesapeake Bay Basin Species 1997 Chesapeake Bay Program February 1997 Chesapeake Bay Program The Chesapeake Bay Program is a unique regional partnership leading and directing restoration of Chesapeake Bay since 1983. The Chesapeake Bay Program partners include the states of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia; the District of Columbia; the Chesapeake Bay Commission, a tri-state legislative body; the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which represents the federal government; and participating citizen advisory groups. In the 1987 Chesapeake Bay Agreement, Chesapeake Bay Program partners set a goal to reduce the nutrients nitrogen and phosphorus entering the Bay by 40% by the year 2000. In the 1992 Amendments to the Chesapeake Bay Agreement, partners agreed to maintain the 40% goal beyond the year 2000 and to attack nutrients at their source--upstream in the tributaries. The Chesapeake Executive Council, made up of the governors of Maryland, Pennsylvania, and Virginia; the mayor of Washington, D.C.; the EPA administrator; and the chair of the Chesapeake Bay Commission, guided the restoration effort in 1993 with five directives addressing key areas of the restoration, including the tributaries, toxics, underwater bay grasses, fish passages, and agricultural nonpoint source pollution. In 1994, partners outlined initiatives for habitat restoration of aquatic, riparian, and upland environments; nutrient reduction in the Bay's tributaries; and toxics reductions, with an emphasis on pollution prevention. The 1995 Local Government Partnership Initiative engages the watershed’s 1,650 local governments in the Bay restoration effort. The Chesapeake Executive Council followed this in 1996 by adopting the Local Government Participation Action Plan and the Priorities for Action for Land, Growth and Stewardship in the Chesapeake Bay Region, which address land use management, growth and development, stream corridor protection, and infrastructure improvements. -

Neotropical Ichthyology, 4(4):451-455, 2006 Copyright © 2006 Sociedade Brasileira de Ictiologia Fishes associated with spinner dolphins at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, tropical Western Atlantic: an update and overview Ivan Sazima*, Cristina Sazima* and José Martins da Silva-Jr** An update is presented for fish species associated with spinner dolphins at Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, tropical Western Atlantic, providing a general view of their diversity. The associates are mostly reef-dwelling fishes that feed on the dolphin wastes. Twelve species are habitual or occasional plankton-eaters and two species are herbivores that occasionally forage on floating pieces of algae. One species is a strict carnivore, one species is a hitchhiker that forages on a variety of foods including parasites and dead tissue from the dolphins, and one species is a carnivore that joins the dolphin groups to forage on schools of small fishes or squids. We predict that the list of fish associated with spinner dolphins will expand mostly with addition of habitual or occasional plankton-eaters. A sanctuary management review is conducted at a sanctuary periodically, in accordance with the National Marine Sanctuaries Act (NMSA; 16 U.S.C. 1431 et seq.). The updated plan applies to the entire area encompassed by the sanctuary. The issue areas and programs addressed in this document were built with guidance from the general public, sanctuary staff, agency representatives, experts in the field and the sanctuary advisory council. At the Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, off North-eastern Brazil, spinner dolphins Stenella longirostris (Delphinidae) regularly congregate in large groups in a shallow bay, which allows for underwater observations of their behaviour and their fish associates. In the course of a broader study of this elusive diskfish, we had the opportunity to made multiple records of two whalesucker couples (three of the fish naturally marked) attached to the same individual dolphin in two different years, over periods of 47 and 87 days respectively. In all the sightings the whalesucker individuals of a couple were recorded side-by-side and positioned on their host’s belly. We surmise that at least one of the couples was a reproductive pair, as the belly of the larger fish was noticeably swollen in the last sighting, and the bulge on its belly was bilateral and extended almost uniformly to the vent, a strong indication of fully mature gonads.
