The best example in history of this was the Exodus from Egypt. That is one model of sensing God in our lives. THANK YOU TO OUR SHABBAT SPONSORS D’var Torah : Rabbi Yosef Weinstock

8:00am Minyan -Diane & Gary Magid commemorating the 25th yahrzeit of Recently our son Eitan asked both Rebecca and me questions about Memorial Day, Kiddush Diane’s beloved father Philip “Beebop” Rossman, and all the observed this coming Monday. He had learned about Yom Hazikaron, Israel’s Memorial May 25 birthdays Day, and he wanted to understand how Memorial Day in the US compared/ differed with -Meryl & Norman Palgon in honor of the birth of their new Yom Hazikaron in Israel. Specifically he was curious to understand why sales at stores, granddaughter to Aliza & Steve Goldstein, along with her which he heard about on TV and radio commercials, were connected to Memorial Day, brothers Matty and Gavin. We welcome Charlotte Reese. May and how shopping was an appropriate way to mark the day. all their Mazel be good Memorial Day in America has a fascinating history. In May 1868, General John A. -Alan & Brenda Pritzker in honor of their grandson, Jacob Logan, the commander-in-chief of the Union veterans’ group known as the Grand Army of Noah, son of Shira & Maor Danino the Republic, issued a decree that May 30th should become a nationwide day of -Steven & Sara Jacoby to commemorate the yahrzeit of his commemoration for the more than 620,000 soldiers killed in the recently ended Civil War. father Aaron Jacoby, Moshe Aharon ben Chaim Zev On Decoration Day, as Logan dubbed it, Americans should lay flowers and decorate the graves of the war dead “whose bodies now lie in almost every city, village and hamlet 9:00am Minyan Meir & Gillian Shnitzer in honor of their son Ariel’s Bar Mitzvah churchyard in the land.” Kiddush According to legend, Logan chose May 30 because it was a rare day that didn’t fall on the anniversary of a Civil War battle, though some historians believe the date was YP Minyan Shaya & Miriam Gutleizer in appreciation of the refuah selected to ensure that flowers across the country would be in full bloom. Kiddush shleimah of their daughter Ziva Although the term Memorial Day was used beginning in the 1880s, the holiday was Beit Midrash Michelle & Aaron Moses to commemorate the yahrzeit of her officially known as Decoration Day for more than a century, when it was changed by Minyan Kiddush father Abaraham Mashia ben Sarah federal law. Four years later, the Uniform Monday Holiday Act of 1968 finally went into effect, moving Memorial Day from its traditional observance on May 30 (regardless of the All other Shabbat Sponsors Group day of the week), to a set day—the last Monday in May. The move has not been without Kiddushim and controversy. Veterans groups, concerned that more Americans associate the holiday with Seudah Shlishit the first long weekend of the summer and not its intended purpose to honor the nation’s war dead, continue to lobby for a return to the May 30 observance. For more than 20 years their cause was championed by Hawaiian Senator—and decorated World War II veteran— Parking Notice Daniel Inouye, who until his 2012 death reintroduced legislation in support of the change Please be aware that the gated parking lots on the north side of our at the start of every Congressional term. It seems that it was when Memorial Day was shifted to Monday that it became more building and along Stirling Road will be locked for the duration of closely associated with shopping and barbecues, and less observed as a solemn day of Shabbat remembrance. I believe that there are other factors at play that cause us, as a community and as a country, to downplay the solemnity of Memorial Day. First, most of us are detached from Shabbat Safety, Security & First Aid the military and the US soldiers serving and protecting us. In Israel, every citizen is “Safety & Security is everyone’s responsibility. If You See Something Say expected to serve in the IDF. Military service and sacrifice are embedded in the country’s Something!” psyche. Here in America many of us don’t personally know any active-duty military. Talk to the President, Rabbis, or Executive Director. Military service can seem like something that other people do, but does not affect or AED (Automated External Defibrillator) & other equipment in closet impact us personally. Another factor that desensitizes us to the solemnity of Memorial Day next to Social Hall. Safety Reflector Belts (a project of the OU) are in the closet for use by our congregants. is that we take our freedom and our safety for granted, when really it is in large part due to the efforts of the brave men and women who serve in our armed forces.

YIH Vaccination Policy Resolution passed by the Young Israel of Hollywood Governing Board on December 26, 2018: It is a religious requirement to get you and your child(ren) vaccinated for the safety of each child and for the community at large. There is no such thing as a Jewish/Halachic religious exemption to vaccinations. Shuls should protect their members (especially those who are medically unable to be vaccinated) by restricting access of those who choose to remain unvaccinated to shul programs and events. Therefore, all adults, youth and teens attending Young Israel of Hollywood programs or services, whether on or off our facility, must be fully vaccinated according to standards of the State of Florida in order to participate in our programs and services. The only exception to this policy is for those who are unable to receive vaccines for valid medical reasons.
