Focus Features to Be Honored by Point Foundation for Respect and Inclusion of Lgbt Community in Its Award-Winning Films FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE FOCUS FEATURES TO BE HONORED BY POINT FOUNDATION FOR RESPECT AND INCLUSION OF LGBT COMMUNITY IN ITS AWARD-WINNING FILMS - Company Heads Will Receive Award at Gala April 16 Event in NYC - NEW YORK, February 9th, 2012 ‐ Point Foundation (Point), the nation’s largest scholarship-granting organization for lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) students of merit, will honor global film company Focus Features on Monday, April 16th at this year’s Point Honors New York gala. Focus, which has made and brought to worldwide audiences such original, Academy Award-winning films as Ang Lee’s Brokeback Mountain and Gus Van Sant’s Milk, will be accorded the Point Inspiration Award, given to a company or organization that champions respect and inclusion of the LGBT community and operates with the vision that investing in today’s potential will produce a brighter tomorrow. Accepting the Point Inspiration Award on April 16 will be Focus Features CEO James Schamus and President Andrew Karpen. The company, which is celebrating its 10th anniversary in May 2012, has had seven of its movies nominated for the Best Picture Academy Award, including most recently the LGBT- themed film The Kids Are All Right, directed by Lisa Cholodenko. Currently an Academy Award nominee is Christopher Plummer for his role in Mike Mills’ Beginners, Focus’s LGBT-themed comedy/drama. Focus’s newest release, Dee Rees’s Pariah, is currently nominated for multiple Spirit and NAACP Image Awards, and stars Adepero Oduye and Kim Wayans in a story about 17-year-old African-American lesbian coming of age. “The ethos of Focus Features and its films – celebrating diverse experiences, questioning the norm, promoting intellectual curiosity and creative expression – are the same qualities we encourage in our Point Scholars,” said Jorge Valencia, Executive Director and Chief Executive Officer of Point Foundation. “Films like Milk and Pariah speak to the values of diversity and empowerment Focus shares with Point and the LGBT community.     2018 Mentor Meeting: Carl Hansen's 'Team Cultural Detritus' at Universal Studios As part of the Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, the winning filmmakers are awarded mentorship meetings with active members of the entertainment industry. ‘Check Mate’ was awarded “Best Film” in the 2018 Easterseals Disability Film Challenge, and the winning team was treated to an exciting day at Universal Studios. Here is creator Carl Hansen’s take on his team’s special day: “I got to the Universal Studios Gate 2 just on time after navigating Los Angeles traffic from dropping my son off at preschool. The security guard told me where to park and I drove in. I apparently passed the parking lot where I was supposed to go and ended up going up a big hill that’s used on the official Tram tours, oops. So I turned around and Jeff Cafuir, director of Community Investment at NBCUniversal, was waiting for me as I pulled in. After exchanging hellos he walked me briskly to an executive building and we proceeded to the top floor reception desk, marked by “Universal Pictures” in large letters around the front. I promptly had to take a photo of the desk because my first paid job at the tender age of 14 was on the movie, “Housesitter” (starring Steve Martin and Goldie Hawn) which had been distributed by Universal Pictures - it felt very full-circle. We were then swiftly guided down to a very large conference room where I met Gesumino Rulli, manager of Global Talent Development & Inclusion, Caitlyn Halsey, manager of the Universal Pictures story department and Charlie Alderman from Focus Features.

    Poison in the Sirkian System: The Political Agenda of Todd Haynes's Far From Heaven Niall Richardson, University of Sunderland, UK Certainly Haynes's work does qualify as queer, but in the traditional sense of the word: unusual, strange, disturbing. (Wyatt, 2000: 175) Haynes "queers" heterosexual, mainstream narrative cinema by making whatever might be familiar or normal about it strange, and in the process hypothesising alternatives that disrupt its integrity and ideological cohesiveness. (DeAngelis, 2004: 41) Todd Haynes is one of the most controversial directors of contemporary cinema. From his student film Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story (1987), to his most controversial, Poison (1991), Haynes has continually challenged spectators' expectations by making the familiar appear unfamiliar and evoking a sense of the unusual, strange, or "queer" within everyday lives. Committed to an agenda of political filmmaking, Haynes's films not only subvert Hollywood's storytelling conventions and assail the spectator with challenging images (especially Poison) but also ask the spectator to acknowledge the alienation of minority groups from mainstream society. It would, therefore, seem odd that Haynes should have recently directed Far From Heaven (2002), a homage to the melodramas of the 1950s.
