The subj ect of Initiation is one that has a great fas ~ cination for thinkers of all schools of thought, and even those who remain sceptical and critical would like to be i l eve that this ultimate attainment were possible . To those who do not believe that such a goal is possible this book is offered for what it may be worth as a formulation of an interesting hypothesis . To those who anticipate n o such a consummatio of all their endeavours, this b ok is t endered in the hope that it may prove an inspiration and a help . Among occidental thinkers at this time there is a wide diversity of view upon this mo mentous subject . There are those who think that it is not o f sufficient immediate to importance engross their attention, and that if the aver age man adheres to the path of duty and high - minded at tention to the business in hand, he will duly arrive at his destination . This is undoubtedly true, yet as capacity for increased service, and the development of powers to be used in the helping of the race are the reward of the man who is willing to make the increased efi ort and to pay the price which initiation demands, perhaps this book may spur some on to attainm ent who might otherwise have drifted slowly towards their goal . They will then become f o . givers , and not the recipients help There are those again who consider that the teachi ng given out in various bo oks hitherto concerning initiation, is erroneous . Initiation has been made out to be fairly easy of attainment, and to call for no such rectitude of character as might have been anticipated . The following chapters may serve to show that the criticism is not un ffi merited . Initiation is profoundly di cult of attainment, and calls for a strenuous discipline of the entire lower f - f - nature, and a life of sel e facing and self abnegating de v i n ot o . At the same time, it must be remembered that the in earlier teaching is right in essence, though belittled in r r t tion t e p e a . ar e es e Again, there some who are inter ted, yet who f el the possibilities involved are too far advanced for them, and that they need not occupy themselves with them at this stage of their evolution . This book seeks to make it apparent that here and now the average man may begin to build that character and to lay those foundations of knowledge which are necessary before even the Path of Due Discipleship can be trodden . preparation may now —if be made, and men and women everywhere may they choose fit themselves for the condition of discipleship and tread the Probationary Path .     Sanat Kumara John Nash [Published in The Beacon, March 2002, pp. 13-20.] Sanat Kumara, Lord of the World, Ancient of Days, Fountainhead of the Will, the Great Sacrifice, the One Initiator, Melchizedek, the King. These titles refer to the great Individuality who rules the world, presides over the Council of Shamballa, heads the Planetary Hierarchy, and wields the Rod of Initiation for the three major initiations. Sanat Kumara, in the Tibetan’s words, is “He to Whom Christ referred when He said, ‘I and My Father are One.’”1 The name “Sanat Kumara” is Sanskrit for “Eternal Youth,” or more poetically “Youth of Endless Summers,” providing two more titles. But who, precisely, is Sanat Kumara, what is His mission on Earth, and what is His relationship to the Planetary Logos? The present study attempts to shed light on the identity and role of One who is clearly of the utmost significance for the planet and all of us. So great is this significance that such a study must be approached with both reverence and caution. The Planetary Logos The seven planetary Logoi in our solar system are great Lives identified variously as the Heavenly Men, Silent Watchers, Planetary Spirits, Seven Spirits before the Throne, Elohim, or Dhyan-Chohans. All the planetary Logoi passed through the human kingdom in previous cycles and, after attaining adeptship, chose the third of seven paths of the Way of the Higher Evolution, which “leads to the higher levels of the cosmic mental plane.”2 The life of a planetary Logos is expressed through a planetary scheme consisting of seven chains, each of which in turn consists of seven globes, for a total of 49 globes.

    Armenian Traditional Black Youths: the 1 Earliest Sources Armen Petrosyan Institute of Archaeology and Ethnography, Yerevan, Armenia [email protected] In this article it is argued that the traditional figure of the Armenian folklore “black youth” is derived from the members of the war-band of the thunder god, mythological counterparts of the archaic war-bands of youths. The blackness of the youths is associated with igneous initiatory rituals. The best parallels of the Armenian heroes are found in Greece, India, and especially in Ossetia and other Caucasian traditions, where the Indo-European (particularly Alanian-Ossetian) influence is significant. In several medieval Armenian songs young heroes are referred to as t‘ux manuks ‘black youths,’ t‘ux ktriçs ‘black braves,’ or simply t‘uxs ‘blacks’ (see Mnatsakanyan 1976, which remains the best and comprehensive work on these figures, and Harutyunyan and Kalantaryan 2001, where several articles pertaining to this theme are published). Also, T‘ux manuk is the appellation of numerous ruined pilgrimage sanctuaries. A. Mnatsakanyan, the first investigator of these traditional figures, considered them in connection with the fratries of youths, whose remnants survived until medieval times (Mnatsakanyan 1976: 193 ff.).2 The study of the t‘ux manuks should be based on revelation of their specific characteristics and comparison with similar figures of other traditions.     Text of Resolutions passed by the General Council of the Theosophical Society Freedom of Thought As the Theosophical Society has spread far and wide over the world, and as members of all religions have become members of it without surrendering the special dogmas, teachings and beliefs of their re- spective faiths, it is thought desirable to emphasize the fact that there is no doctrine, no opinion, by whomsoever taught or held, that is in any way binding on any member of the Society, none which any member is not free to accept or reject. Approval of its three Objects is the sole condition of membership. No teacher, or writer, from H. P. Blavatsky onwards, has any authority to impose his or her teachings or opinions on members. Every member has an equal right to follow any school of thought, but has no right to force the choice on any other. Neither a candidate for any office nor any voter can be rendered ineligible to stand or to vote, because of any opinion held, or because of membership in any school of thought. Opinions or beliefs neither bestow privileges nor inflict penalties. The Members of the General Council earnestly request every member of the Theosophical Society to maintain, defend and act upon these fundamental principles of the Society, and also fearlessly to exercise the right of liberty of thought and of expression thereof, within the limits of courtesy and consideration for others. Freedom of the Society The Theosophical Society, while cooperating with all other bodies whose aims and activities make such cooperation possible, is and must remain an organization entirely independent of them, not committed to any objects save its own, and intent on developing its own work on the broadest and most inclusive lines, so as to move towards its own goal as indicated in and by the pursuit of those objects and that Divine Wisdom which in the abstract is implicit in the title ‘The Theosophical Society’.

This article examines the details of the Anthroposophical theory of cosmic and individual redemption and draws out the characteristic assumptions about racial and ethnic difference that underlie it. Particular attention is given to textual sources unavailable in English, which reveal the specific features of Steiner’s account of “race evolution” and “soul evolution.” Placing Steiner’s worldview in its historical and ideological context, the article highlights the contours of racial thinking within a prominent alternative spiritual movement and delineates the central role of a racially configured conception of evolution within Anthroposophy past and present.

There are more books in English than in any other foreign language. Steiner esteemed English as “a universal world language”. The present paper identifies 327 books in English in Rudolf Steiner’s personal library.

Primarily the creation of Henry Steel Olcott and Helena Petrovna Blavatsky, the Theosophical Society went through a number of early incarnations. One original version promised to teach occult powers. After Blavatsky found that she could not honor earlier promises to teach occultism, she shifted the focus of the Society to one that promoted Universal Brotherhood instead, highlighting notions of the body and demanding the control of emotion as a means to rebuff demands for training. With this refocusing, Blavatsky reestablished control of the Society and asserted herself as the central channel of esoteric knowledge. Thus, by shifting the focus from the attainment of occult powers to the more ambiguous “spiritual enlightenment,” Blavatsky erected an elaborate, centralized system of delayed spiritual gratification, a system contingent upon the individual’s adoption of specific morals and values, while simultaneously maintaining control of the human body on all its levels: spiritual, social, physical, mental, and especially emotional. Introduction During a meeting of the Theosophical Society in New York City on October 18, 1876, the co-founder and legal counsel for the newly established organization, William Quan Judge (1851– 96), gave a lecture about his personal experiences in the study of Theosophy. He spoke about his recent experiences of astrally traveling and implanting his thoughts and ideas into the minds of others. He did this through focusing his will and commanding his “double,” or astral body, to go to these places and influence others.

    Gardiner, Montana FOREWORD “Thou shalt decree a thing and it shall be established unto thee!” Every moment each man or woman creates his own future. Life, which is a God-given gift, continually acts to ful- fill man’s spoken or unspoken desires. Human thoughts and feelings are decrees in themselves and do produce with cer- tainty and justice after their kind—whether joy or sorrow. Although they live in a sea of wisdom, most men create in ignorance; their lives are therefore a mixture of both good and bad, a chaotic outpicturing of the so-called wheel of fortune. Believing honest men and women want to rise above self-imposed bondage and would shed unhappy human quali- ties of thought and feeling—long endured but not cured— I AM offering these decrees to the world, in the sunlight of divine Love and Light. Their constant and faithful use will plant the ever-fertile ground of human consciousness with seeds of grace and sprouts of mercy. These in turn will yield the harvest of a new life, a personal harvest of harmony and abundance, quickly fulfilled at your call through individual growth and the expansion of God’s sacred fire. Like the balm of Gilead, these decrees will anoint the weary souls of earth’s children and bind human hearts to - gether with the ascended hosts, making the human and the divine one family which can and will establish forever peace and victory in the Light of God which never fails.
