What made Asahara an action prophet was the inseparability of prophecy and action, of what he imagined and what he did.” —ROBERT JAY LIFTON, in Destroying the World to Save It, on the leader of the Aum Shinrikyo cult, which in 1995 released the deadly nerve gas sarin in five subway trains in Tokyo n his 1988 novel, S., in which he credits material included in The Rajneesh Chronicles as one of his sources, John Updike tells the story of a housewife in Massachusetts who abandons her husband and middle-class lifestyle to become a “sannyasin” at Ia religious commune in Arizona presided over by a guru from India. As described in a book-study guide on the Internet, “[l]ife at the com- mune turns out to be a charade of spiritual enlightenment, a comic rite of sexual initiation, and a wild mixture of jealousy, fraud, embez- zlement, and self-deception.” This description fits life at Rancho Rajneesh and the city of Rajneeshpuram in central Oregon during their occupation by Bhag- wan Shree Rajneesh and his cohort from 1981-85 pretty well—though Updike was, of course, creating fiction, as well as applying his char- acteristic irony to a social situation that, in real life, was not very amusing at all. In real life, the goings-on at this so-called commune were deadly serious, for it was there that the first act of bioterror- ism in U.S. history—salmonella poisoning of citizens and officials of Wasco County—was plotted and launched. It was there also that the same nurse who cultured the salmonella bacteria used in that attack endeavored—in a project with the secret code name “Moses Five”—to culture a live AIDS virus, which she must have hoped to use to ful- fill the Bhagwan’s prophecy that two-thirds of the world’s population would ultimately die of that disease. When the first edition of Secrets of RSS was released, air was thick with motivated propaganda about ‘Saffron terror’ and RSS was the favourite whipping boy as the face of ‘Hindu fascism’. Now as the second edition is ready for release, environment has transformed radically.

    STATEMENT DS213 SWAMI YOGANANDA AND THE SELF-REALIZATION FELLOWSHIP A Successful Hindu Countermission to the West by Elliot Miller The earliest Hindu missionaries to the West were arguably the most impressive. In 1893 Swami Vivekananda (1863 –1902), a young disciple of the celebrated Hindu “avatar” (manifestation of God) Sri Ramakrishna (1836 –1886), spoke at the World’s Parliament of Religions in Chicago and won an enthusiastic American following with his genteel manner and erudite presentation. Over the next few years, he inaugurated the first Eastern religious movement in America: the Vedanta Societies of various cities, independent of one another but under the spiritual leadership of the Ramakrishna Order in India. In 1920 a second Hindu missionary effort was launched in America when a comparably charismatic “neo -Vedanta” swami, Paramahansa Yogananda, was invited to speak at the International Congress of Religious Liberals in Boston, sponsored by the Unitarian Church. After the Congress, Yogananda lectured across the country, spellbinding audiences with his immense charm and powerful presence. In 1925 he established the headquarters for his Self -Realization Fellowship (SRF) in Los Angeles on the site of a former hotel atop Mount Washington. He was the first Eastern guru to take up permanent residence in the United States after creating a following here. NEO-VEDANTA: THE FORCE STRIKES BACK Neo-Vedanta arose partly as a countermissionary movement to Christianity in nineteenth -century India. Having lost a significant minority of Indians (especially among the outcast “Untouchables”) to Christianity under British rule, certain adherents of the ancient Advaita Vedanta school of Hinduism retooled their religion to better compete with Christianity for the s ouls not only of Easterners, but of Westerners as well.

    THE CANVASS: ® States and Election Reform A Newsletter for Legislatures July 2008 Tennessee and Ohio Enact Major Bipartisan Election Reform Inside This Issue Tennessee: Tennessee's legislature recently passed the Tennessee 1 Tennessee and Ohio Voter Confidence Act (House Bill 1256) with strong bipartisan support. Enact Major Election In the House, the bill passed 92-3, and in the Senate it passed Reform unanimously 33-0. The bill was signed into law on June 5, 2008 and follows from recommendations made in a report released earlier this year 5 Statistical Update on by the Tennessee Advisory Commission on Intergovernmental Relations. State Election Legislation Sponsored by Representative Gary Moore and Senator Joe Haynes, the bill requires all of the state's counties to convert to precinct-based optical scan 6 Voting Information Project voting by November 2010. It also requires that any voting machine bought or leased after January 1, 2009 be able to create a voter-verified 7 School and Library Safety paper trail, which can be used in recounts and audits. By 2010, all on Election Day counties will have to have voting machines in place that create a paper trail. Jenny Wade California Institute of Integral Studies San Francisco, CA, USA Historically the exclusive purview of contemplative religious paths, awakening into nonduality was considered the pinnacle of human attainment, even if, in some traditions, it proved to be the threshold to even more sublime states. Awakening was traditionally available only to dedicated elite seekers, usually renunciates who practiced for years in monastic communities, their progress directed by the authorities of their lineage. Today technologies for creating the electroencephalographic signatures of advanced meditators are available for purchase, and esoteric religious practices like Zen meditation and asana yoga have been secularized as stress-reduction techniques and physical exercise, respectively.

The first author recounts his own journey of seeing through the illusion of the separate self and embracing nondual awareness. Following this, he presents a nondual psychotherapy case study describing the process of a client having an awakening experience – the letting go of her egoic separate self in the moment – and her subsequent realization that surrendering is not a one-time event but an ongoing process. Gary Nixon PhD, has been on the nondual ‘pathless’ path for over 25 years, is a transpersonal psychologist, and professor in the addiction counseling program at the University of Lethbridge. He has been facilitating nondual groups for the past ten years.
