The Concierge Team MARRAKESH GUIDED TOUR DJEMAA EL FNA SQUARE Located in the heart of the Medina, Djemaa el Fna Square is the geographical, cultural and social center of Marrakech. It is dominated by the minaret of the Koutoubia mosque. This legendary site attracts millions of visitors who come attend the shows run by the famous snake charmers, storytellers, monkey trainers, popular actors, musicians and other artists... Djemaa el Fna was recognized and declared Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity by UNESCO in 2001. KOUTOUBIA MOSQUE This religious building built in the twelfth century is representative of the architectural art of the Almohads. Its name comes from the fact that it was located in the souk of the merchants of manuscripts. Built in 1158, the Koutoubia mosque, which is 77m high up, still, dominates the city today and this is one of the largest mosques in Africa. MADRASSA BEN YOUSSEF This Koranic school built in 1570 by the Saadian is a gem of Moorish architecture . The name Ben Youssef comes from the Almoravid sultan Ali Ben Youssef. Madrasa was during more than four centuries a shelter for students thirst for knowledge in various sciences, especially theology. It had 132 rooms for non- students from Marrakech and could accommodate up to 900 students. TOMBS SAADIENS The mausoleum houses the body of a sixty Saadian , including Al - Mansour, his successors and his family. This mausoleum is a fine example of Moorish decorative art. They were not discovered until 1917 . EL BAHIA PALACE The Bahia Palace, located in the Medina, is a masterpiece of Moroccan architecture which dates back to the late nineteenth century. Like most Arab-Andalusian palaces, it contains beautiful gardens and lovely patios, and has 150 lavishly decorated rooms. MAJORELLE GARDEN The Majorelle Garden is a botanical garden of the French painter Jacques Majorelle (1886-1962) established in 1931 and owned by Pierre Bergé since 1980. After Yves Saint Laurent passed away in 2008, his ashes were scattered in the garden. Majorelle Garden is home to the Berber museum where the personal collection of Pierre Bergé and Yves Saint Laurent is presented to the public. MENARA GARDENS Fitted under the Almohad dynasty, the Menara garden is a large garden filled with olive trees. It is a very peaceful place, away from the bustle of the city. At the heart of the garden, a large pool at the base of a lodge serves as a reservoir of water to irrigate crops. It is therefore an ideal place for walks. The walk will show you a more traditional way of living and allow you to admire the complexity of this city. The souks surround the square so start shopping! Afternoon Lunch Spend some more time at Jemaa El Fna exploring the local food vendors and all the crazy options they offer. You if prefer a sit-down, opt-out for a cafe overlooking the square. Marrakech Museum Continuing the exploration of the old town, head over to the Museum from the maze of the souks which should be anywhere from 10 to 20 mins. You can admire great art as well as the outdoor gardens. If open after renovations, head over to Ben Youssef Madrasa which is nearby as well. Koutoubia Mosque Walk back to the mosque or catch a taxi and admire its beautiful exterior. It’s a short 10-minute walk and you cannot enter inside as a non-muslim.     Joël Reland (History) – Morocco, Summer 2014 My decision to travel to Morocco this summer relates to the changing way in which I am thinking about and choosing to study history as I move towards my final year. After two years of studying papers which encapsulate broad chronological periods, Part II is an opportunity to narrow the focus of study and increase specialised knowledge. Thus I have chosen a collection of papers which put a significant emphasis on political theory and, more specifically, the ideas of post colonialism. This does not simply mean looking at the histories of postcolonial nations, but rather providing new angles of analysis, histories from below, moving past the narratives of great men and nations, asking how identity, personal and collective, generates meaning in an increasingly globalised world. And a large degree of what Morocco taught me is that these postcolonial narratives are increasingly complex and interactive. I arrived expecting French to be the lingua franca, yet it turns out that in the major cities English is an increasingly common means of interaction between North African and European. The great, long boulevards constructed by the French remain Marrakech’s main arteries, but they carry through a city which upholds many historical layers. At the heart of the city stand the elegantly carved walls of the Medina and the looming minaret of the Koutoubia Mosque. The Ben Youssef Madrasa also attests to the near-1000 long year history of the city, as a place of learning, art and trade. Yet merely hundreds of metres away is the Jardin Majorelle: an evocative, blue relic of French colonialism, richly coloured walls and abundant plant- life evoking Europeanised visions of a tranquil existence in North Africa.
