Christmas Carols Originated In Italy . During the thirteenth century, among the early Franciscans, Francis of Assisi, who founded the Catholic Church’s Franciscan Order, began the Christmas tradition of caroling, singing joyful songs to celebrate the holiday. Before that time, people had listened to priests sing solemn Christmas hymns during formal church services. Francis wanted people to be able to express their joy at Christmas by singing simple songs themselves wherever they happened to be, such as in their own homes or even while walking around outside. The practice soon spread all over Europe. This would encourage students to learn more about their Italian heritage at an early age. With the help of Donna Di Natale, a language arts teacher in the Ronkonkoma Middle School, the Committee has been working on how this contest would run. On October 4, 2015, Charlie Lucie, Chairman of the District 1 (Suffolk County) Commission for Social Justice, sent Mr. Charles Morea, Principal of the Ronkonkoma Middle School, a letter explaining the Committee's goals and with his approval, our hope to roll out our pilot essay contest at his school. At this meeting, Donna Di Natale reported that her Principal has agreed to let us use his middle school for our pilot program; we are awaiting his formal letter of approval. Donna explained that the essay contest will be part of the student’s curriculum and will involve three 7th grade Italian classes but only those students of Italian American descent will participate in this contest. The committee worked on a scoring system to grade the essays and how the prizes would be determined. It was agreed that the essay should be a minimum of 150 words, must be a narrative, and typed. The essay will cover 14 points, including name and age of immigrant, relationship to the student, birthplace of the immigrant, year of immigration and other details of how they came here and why. The essay must also include at least one visual supporting item such as a picture, a recipe, article of clothing, etc. whose authenticity must be verified by the student's parent(s) to preclude anyone downloading something from the internet. The contest will start before the December 22nd break with a deadline of May 2nd, with winners selected in time for presentation of awards at the end of year ceremony in June. There will be three awards: $300 Savings Bond for 1st Place; $200 Savings Bond for 2nd Place; and $150 Savings Bonds for 3rd Place. Also discussed was perhaps including a trophy for the winners or maybe a certificate for each student who participated. At the next CSJ meeting in November, Donna hopes to present a flyer promoting the contest to the students and the committee will continue to work on more details for this contest. • Drake University a Survey and Assessment of the Coen Brothers' Use of Music in Their Movies a Thesis Submitted to the Faculty
DRAKE UNIVERSITY A SURVEY AND ASSESSMENT OF THE COEN BROTHERS’ USE OF MUSIC IN THEIR MOVIES A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF THE B.A. MUSIC PROGRAM IN CANDIDACY FOR THE DEGREE OF BACHELOR OF ARTS IN MUSIC BY LAURA KROSSNER DES MOINES, IA MAY 2009 Everyone who has seen a film by Ethan and Joel Coen has an opinion about their cinematic style. Their distinctive movies feature characters and worlds that are at once realistic and far-fetched, and are so idiosyncratic that one cannot help but feel strongly about their movies, whether positively or negatively. In his book about American independent films, Emanuel Levy describes the Coens as “clever directors who know too much about movies and too little about real life,” makers of movies with stories and characters so outlandish, they could never actually occur in real life.1 And maybe that’s what makes them interesting; by ignoring how people would typically act in ridiculous situations, they defy expectations. The Coen brothers’ films are known for mixing violent imagery and oddball humor, recasting classic styles within a postmodern perspective. Since hitting it big with Miller’s Crossing (1990), they have largely eschewed the big studio system to keep working on small budget films. They like to retain as much creative control over their movies as possible, working with the same general crew and actors from one film to another, and it seems to have paid off: their movies have won numerous awards, including an Academy Award for Best Writing (Fargo), and for Best 1 Emanuel Levy, Cinema of Outsiders: The Rise of American Independent Film (New York: New York University Press, 1999), 223.

The most remarkable characteristics of the gangster genre are its ethnically or racially non-white protagonist and the tendency for the gangster to experience an identity-challenging loss.

After four years together, the two have grown stifled. Desperate to escape their ennui, but fearful of life apart, they decide to intricately strategize their own break up. Based on an actual experiment in real-life devised by filmmakers and partners, Daryl Wein and Zoe Lister-Jones, the film interprets a year in their lives exploring alternatives to monogamy, and the madness that ensues.
