Suddenly, they came upon a small boy playing on the beach. He had dug a hole in the sand and kept running down to the sea, dipping his toy bucket in the water and running back up the beach to empty the water into the hole. The two men watched him for a while as he ran back and forth filling and emptying his bucket. They found the scene amusing. They went up to the boy and asked what he was doing. Very seriously he told them he was emptying the ocean into the hole he had dug in the sand. The two men smiled, and walked on, resuming their discussion about God. After a while, one of them stopped and said to the other, “You know, we were amused just now when that child told us what he was trying to do. Yet what we have been trying to do in our discussion about God is just the same. It is just as impossible for us to understand the mystery of God as it is for that child to put the water of the ocean into that hole. Our minds are but tiny thimbles, whereas the reality of God is as great as the ocean. There is a story about a Jew who had a sudden heart attack on the street. A priest appeared on the scene, knelt by the victim and asked if he were a Christian. The Jew looked perplexed. “Do you believe in the Trinity,” persisted the priest, “you know the Three in One?” “My God,” grasped the stricken Jew, “at a time like this …at a time like this all he can offer me is a mathematical proposition!” (MB) Celebration Mass for the Feast of St Barnabas During the last week as many of you were aware the Cathedral held a Mass and Solemn Vespers to celebrate the 175th Anniversary of Consecration. They were both tremendous occasions for the Cathedral, with many honoured guests, some travelling from afar! Our sincere thanks to all who in anyway contributed to the successful outcome - to Alex Patterson, Ellie Martin, Robert Gower and the Cathedral Choir and Youth Choir for the music, to Charles Newham and all the Altar Servers, the flower groups from around our Diocese for the beautiful flower tributes, Maria Kirk and the Craft Group for the stunning banners, the Women of St Barnabas and Valerie Black and her teams for the catering and the hospitality shown to the visitors; to Robert and Caroline Whitehead and their teams who welcomed, guided our visitors and made them feel so welcome; to the Knights of St Columba who braved the rain to man the parking around the Cathedral, to Anthony O’Sullivan and his teams for making everywhere so clean and tidy, to Michael Henchy for the photography and finally thank you to Fr Jonathan, who kept us all in order. There were so many people involved to make this a wonderful occasion, our sincere thanks and blessings to you all. Confirmations Congratulations to all those who were confirmed last Sunday. We thank all those who helped to make the day go so well and to Barbara, Julie and Bridget for preparing the children and Jean for preparing the adults. He said: "I commend our political leaders for standing together in Creggan on Good Friday. I am however left with a question: 'Why in God's name does it take the death of a 29 year old woman with her whole life in front of her to get us to this point?'" Irish Taoiseach Leo Varadkar, British Prime Minister Theresa May, Sinn Fein leader Mary Lou McDonald and DUP leader Arlene Foster, were present and slowly rose to their feet after the congregation stood up and applauded. Watch a BBC clip here: www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-northern-ireland-48039266 Fr Magill's address (slightly abridged) follows: I have no idea what you Sara, Lyra's partner must have felt on Thursday night when those shots rang out and Lyra was hit and fell to the ground. I can't begin to imagine what you Lyra's mum, and you her sisters and brothers must have gone through when Sara phoned to tell you Lyra had been shot.
