Mora Wade THE RECEPTION OF OPITZ'S lUDITH DURING THE BAROQUE By virtue of its status as the second German opera libretto, Martin Opitz's ludith (1635), has received little critical attention in its own right. l ludith stands in the shadow of its predecessor, Da/ne (1627),2 also by Opitz, as weH as in that of a successor, Harsdörffer and Staden's See/ewig (1644), the first German-Ianguage opera to which the music is extant today.3 Both libretti by Opitz, Dafne and ludith, are the earliest examples of the reception of Italian opera into German-speaking lands.4 Da/ne was based on the opera ofthe 1. The Dutch Golden Age: a new aurea ætas? The revival of a myth in the seventeenth-century Republic Geneva, 31 May – 2 June 2018 « ’T was in dien tyd de Gulde Eeuw voor de Konst, en de goude appelen (nu door akelige wegen en zweet naauw te vinden) dropen den Konstenaars van zelf in den mond » (‘This time was the Golden Age for Art, and the golden apples (now hardly to be found if by difficult roads and sweat) fell spontaneously in the mouths of Artists.’) Arnold Houbraken, De groote schouburgh der nederlantsche konstschilders en schilderessen, 1718-1721, vol. II, p. 237.1 In 1719, the painter Arnold Houbraken voiced his regret about the end of the prosperity that had reigned in the Dutch Republic around the middle of the seventeenth century. He indicates this period as especially favorable to artists and speaks of a ‘golden age for art’ (Gulde Eeuw voor de Konst). But what exactly was Houbraken talking about? The word eeuw is ambiguous: it could refer to the length of a century as well as to an undetermined period, relatively long and historically undefined. In fact, since the sixteenth century, the expression gulde(n) eeuw or goude(n) eeuw referred to two separate realities as they can be distinguished today:2 the ‘golden century’, that is to say a period that is part of history; and the ‘golden age’, a mythical epoch under the reign of Saturn, during which men and women lived like gods, were loved by them, and enjoyed peace and happiness and harmony with nature. -

This pretensión can rarely be advanced in favour of familiar letters, written in haste for the information or entertain ment of private friends. Such letters are frequently among the most delightful of literary compositions, but the stamp of absolute literary perfe&ion is rarely impressed upon them. The exceptions to this rule, in English literature at least, occur principally in the epistolary litera ture of the eighteenth century. Pope and Gray, artificial in their poetry, were not less artificial in genius to Cowper and Gray ; but would their un- their correspondence ; but while in the former premeditated utterances, from a literary point of department of composition they strove to display view, compare with the artifice of their prede their art, in the latter their no less successful cessors? The answer is not doubtful. Byron, endeavour was to conceal it. Together with Scott, and Kcats are excellent letter-writers, but Cowper and Walpole, they achieved the feat of their letters are far from possessing the classical imparting a literary value to ordinary topics by impress which they communicated to their poetry. -

Schade, Ph.D. ii Abstract In my dissertation “Atomic Apocalypse – ‘Nuclear Fiction’ in German Literature and Culture,” I investigate the portrayal of the nuclear age and its most dreaded fantasy, the nuclear apocalypse, in German fictionalizations and cultural writings. My selection contains texts of disparate natures and provenance: about fifty plays, novels, audio plays, treatises, narratives, films from 1946 to 2009. I regard these texts as a genre of their own and attempt a description of the various elements that tie them together. The fascination with the end of the world that high and popular culture have developed after 9/11 partially originated from the tradition of nuclear fiction since 1945. The Cold War has produced strong and lasting apocalyptic images in German culture that reject the traditional biblical apocalypse and that draw up a new worldview. In particular, German nuclear fiction sees the atomic apocalypse as another step towards the technical facilitation of genocide, preceded by the Jewish Holocaust with its gas chambers and ovens. -

Già alla fine dell’Ottocento, Antonio Favaro, curatore dell’Edizione Nazionale delle Opere galileiane, individuò più di 500 opere appartenute a Galileo (cfr. A. Favaro, La libreria di Galileo Galilei, in «Bullettino di bibliografia e di storia delle scienze matematiche e fisiche», XIX, 1886, p. 219-293 e successive appendici del 1887 e 1896). Il catalogo di Favaro si è arricchito di ulteriori segnalazioni bibliografiche, frutto di recenti ricerche sul tema compiute da Michele Camerota (La biblioteca di Galileo: alcune integrazioni e aggiunte desunte dal carteggio, in Biblioteche filosofiche private in età moderna e contemporanea. Firenze : Le Lettere, 2010, p. 81-95) e Crystal Hall (Galileo's library reconsidered. « Galilaeana», a. 12 (2015), p. 29-82). Si è giunti così all’identificazione di un totale di 600 volumi che furono certamente nella disponibilità di Galileo. Alcune delle edizioni qui registrate sono possedute anche dalla Biblioteca del Museo Galileo, altre sono accessibili in versione digitale nella Banca dati cumulativa del Museo Galileo alla url: www.museogalileo.it/bancadaticumulativa.html GALILEO’s LIBRARY The reconstruction of the inventory of Galileo' s library represents an essential tool to fully understand the cultural references of the great Tuscan scientist.
