Once complete, Maestri Field will feature a new grandstand with chair back seating for 600 spectators, along with a new conces sion area that will be housed at the grandstand’s base. Also an elevator will provide access to the new press box that will feature not only areas for the media and game operations staff, but also a suite with a bathroom and a wet bar.

The grandstand project is the final phase of the renovation project. The most recent phase was finished in 2011, which saw a newly renovated clubhouse complete with new lockers, meeting rooms and a coaches suite. The clubhouse is located behind the third base stands.

UNO is tentatively slated to open the ballpark with a game against LSU on Feb. 15, 2014.

BONURA FOLLOWS IN FATHER’S FOOT- STEPS • Student assistant Kal Bonura is in his second year on the staff following two seasons as a player in which he appeared in 10 games. • An injury brought an early end to Bonura’s tenure as a stu- dent-athlete. • Kal joins his father in serving as both a coach and player. Kenny Bonura was a member of the 1984 UNO College Worid Series team and also served as an assistant coach under for- mer head man . PRIVATEER PAIR SELECTED TO ABCA HALL OF FAME • Earlier this year, the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA) Hall of Fame announced it would induct former New Or- leans Privateer baseball players Paul Mainieri and Augie Schmidt in 2014. • Mainieri currently serves as the head baseball coach at LSU while Schmidt begins his 26th season at Carthage next month. • Both played under legendary UNO head baseball coach and 1991 ABCA Hall of Fame inductee Ron Maestri. • A second baseman on the UNO baseball team from 1978-79, Mainieri earned All-Sun Belt Conference recognition on a 1979 squad that included Randy Bush and Mike Quade. Both Privateer teams featuring Mainieri won Sun Belt Conference championships with the 1979 squad reaching the NCAA Division I South Re- gional. • The 1982 Golden Spikes Award winner as the top amateur base- ball player in the country, Schmidt appeared in 190 games from 1980 through 1982.
