[generalNote]: Hanes gweinyddol / Braslun bywgraffyddol | Administrative history | Biographical sketch Nodyn | Note Sir Bertram Clough Williams-Ellis was an architect and creator of Portmeirion village, with interests ranging from architecture, landscaping and preservation of the countryside to landscaping of trunk roads and writing. Clough Williams-Ellis was born on the 28th of May, 1883, and educated at Oundle and Trinity College, Cambridge. He began training as an architect in London but within three months left for his first commission. His most famous project was Portmeirion village in North Wales, but other major works include Llangoed Castle; Oare House; Stowe School; Bishop's Stortford College Chapel; the Lloyd George Mausoleum, Museum, and Westminster Abbey Memorial; Rhiwlas; Voelas; Nantclwyd Hall and Dalton Hall. Letters from Clough Williams-Ellis, was also involved in many lesser projects, including churches, schools, village halls and civic amenities, smaller houses, hotels, monuments and garden follies. Sir Clough Williams-Ellis was a member of numerous committees, among them the National Parks Committee, National Trust Committee for Wales and the Trunk Road Advisory Committee. He was also the Vice-President of the Council for the Preservation of Rural Wales and a member of the Athenaeum Club in London. A prolific writer, the following publications are but a few examples of his works: England and the Octopus (London, [1928]), The Architect (London, 1929), Town and Country Planning (1951), Portmeirion - the Place and its Meaning (London, [1963], Roads in the Landscape (1967), Architect Errant (London, 1971), and Around the World in Ninety Years (Portmeirion, 1978). He died on the 8th of April, 1978. Also included are seven letters and cards (one incomplete), 1948-1959, from the architect's sister-in- law, Cecily Williams-Ellis, to Vale, mostly relating to the activities of the Caernarvonshire Branch of the Council for the Preservation of Rural Wales (ff. 36-39, 41-45); as well as three carbon copies of letters from Vale, 1937, 1949 (ff. 17, 21, 40). There are also references to the bombing school at Porth Neigwl (f. 14), film production in Wales (ff. 27-29), the landscape architect Dame Sylvia Crowe (ff. 33), and to Portmeirion (ff. 26, 31, 35).     Beneficiaria COLFUTURO 2018 One-Man-Band: Clough Williams-Ellis’ architectural ensemble at Portmeirion Maria Angelica Manosalva Dissertation MA Architectural History, UCL September 2019 Beneficiaria COLFUTURO 2018 Abstract One-Man-Band: Clough Williams-Ellis’s architectural ensemble at Portmeirion This thesis argues that Portmeirion, a holiday resort in North Wales built and designed by Sir Clough Williams-Ellis from 1925 to 1976, is not an ‘idiosyncratic playground of little interest’ but an architectural site that not only followed the pattern of expansion of seaside tourist resorts in Britain since the early 1900s but also responded to them through its unique and sustainable ‘light-opera’ approach. Whilst the village’s characteristic look corresponds to the fact that Williams-Ellis aesthetically designed every corner, down to the last detail, it also reflects his lifelong efforts of introducing pleasurable and accessible forms of architecture to the public. Through a narrative mode of creative-writing describing a journey to Portmeirion, the strong association of the village with fictional stories such as the 1960s TV series The Prisoner and its long disregard within British architectural history are challenged – thus positioning Portmeirion as an exemplar of reactions against what were regarded as unsympathetic rural leisure developments in the early-twentieth century.     JOMEC Journal Journalism, Media and Cultural Studies Published by Cardiff University Press ‘I Don’t Think the Two Would Be the Same Without Each Other’: Portmeirion as Unintentional Paratext Abby Waysdorf Utrecht University Email: [email protected] Keywords The Prisoner paratext Portmeirion fan tourism fandom interviews Abstract This article looks at media tourism through the concept of the paratext. The term paratext, originally developed by literary theorist Gérard Genette to discuss the ‘extra-textual’ elements of a book that gives the reader context about it (such as book covers or the author’s biographical information). It has become important to media scholars seeking to understand how audiences understand films and television shows in a media-rich environment. This paper expands on the concept, arguing that place can be used and understood as an ‘unintentional’ paratext – a paratext that was not created as one, but that functions as one for audiences. I do this through an analysis of the relationship between 1960s cult television show The Prisoner (ITV 1967-8) and its filming location of Portmeirion, a holiday village in North Wales, where fans have been visiting since The Prisoner first aired. Through analysis of 16 interviews with The Prisoner fans, participant observation at Portmeirion, and analysis of fan-produced writing, I show how fans have established and use Portmeirion as a paratext. Fans not only visit Portmeirion to better understand how it was used in the genesis and creation of The Prisoner, but establish parallels between Portmeirion itself and the program, putting The Prisoner into a particular British artistic tradition and further confirming it as a worthy object of fandom.

    Investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a prisoner at HMP Gloucester, in June 2005 Prisons and Probation Ombudsman for England and Wales October 2005 This is the report of an investigation into the death of a man who died on 3 June 2005 in hospital. The man was a prisoner at HMP Gloucester and had been found, earlier that morning, hanging from the window bars of his cell. I offer my sincere condolences to the man’s family. The difficulties that families face in coping with a family member who is addicted to drugs need little elucidation from me. I also offer my sympathies to management and staff at Gloucester prison. They have to work under difficult circumstances with large numbers of very vulnerable men who, in the great majority of cases, are withdrawing from drugs. Two staff from my office conducted the investigation. I am grateful for the assistance they received from the staff and management of HMP Gloucester. I wish to acknowledge too the help of the Gloucestershire Police who carried out their own enquiry into the man’s death and readily shared information. My thanks also go to West Gloucester Primary Care Trust who conducted the clinical review. What caused the man apparently to take his own life cannot be known with any certainty.
