Porini Camps Mammal Guide By Rustom Framjee Preface This mammal guide provides some interesting facts about the mammals that are seen by guests staying at Porini Camps. In addition, there are many species of birds and reptiles which are listed separately from this guide. Many visitors are surprised at the wealth of wildlife and how close you can get to the animals without disturbing them. Because the camps operate on a low tourist density basis (one tent per 700 acres) the wildlife is not ‘crowded’ by many vehicles and you can see them in a natural state - hunting, socialising, playing, giving birth and fighting to defend their territories. Some are more difficult to see than others, and some can only be seen when you go on a night drive. All Porini camps are unfenced and located in game rich areas and you will see much wildlife even in and around the camps. The Maasai guides who accompany you on all game drives and walks are very well trained and qualified professional guides. They are passionate and enthusiastic about their land and its wildlife and really want to show you as much as they can. They have a wealth of knowledge and you are encouraged to ask them more about what you see. They know many of the animals individually and can tell you stories about them. If you are particularly interested in something, let them know and they will try to help you see it. While some facts and figures are from some of the references listed, the bulk of information in this guide has come from the knowledge of guides and camp staff.

  • The 2008 IUCN Red Listings of the World's Small Carnivores
The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome. Recent records were used to confirm the presence of 27 of these species in Tanzania. These were three species of cats or felids: serval (Leptailurus serval); caracal (Caracal caracal) and wild cat (Felis silvestris). Five mustelids: Cape clawless otter (Aonyx capensis); spotted-necked otter (Hydrictis maculicollis); honey badger (Mellivora capensis); striped weasel (Poecilogale albinucha); and zorilla (Ictonyx striatus). Atilax paludinosus – Water Mongoose listing in a higher category of threat. However, we advise that monitoring is necessary, especially in areas where development may be affecting water supply and quality, to determine any potential negative impacts. Climate change could also threaten this species in the future, especially local subpopulations, as water sources and systems are affected. Regional population effects: The distribution of this species in the assessment region is continuous with the rest of the African range, so rescue effects are possible. However, dispersal and movements in general are likely to be dependent upon the presence of water corridors (permanent and seasonal rivers and streams, dam Niall Perrins networks, wetlands).
