8 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Presidents Report STC South Camberwell’s 40 th season was an enormous year for our club. We celebrated our 40th milestone in fine style, with a wonderful function at Caulfield Racecourse. On behalf of the entire club, I congratulate all the people who worked behind the scenes to pull together a memorable night, with particular thanks to Dicky and Kylie Corbett, Peter Duncan, Dan Sharpe and Kylie and Paul Zennaro.

This season, the club fielded a record of 165 players each week, made up of 6 senior sides and 9 junior sides. Stuart Hamilton also managed a Milo program for pre-junior cricketers, with 25 children learning the finer points of the game every Tuesday night. Our juniors had a remarkable year, collecting 3 premierships. The club is certainly in great shape, and we are indebted to Stuart Hamilton, Basil Finnigan, as well as all of the junior team managers and the constant and reliable helpers, who have contributed a great deal of blood, sweat and tears. Thank you to each and every person who continues to help shape the future of our club. With some additional senior assistance next season, the juniors will progress to even greater heights.

The committee had a very good season, and we certainly delivered on the majority of our off-field objectives. The work required to manage the day-to-day operations of the club increases every year, as do the expectations of our members. We will require 3 or 4 young and enthusiastic committee members in the coming season, and we look forward to those volunteers reinvigorating the club with fresh ideas and approaches. I would like to thank the entire committee for their work rate throughout this season. I would like to give a special thank you to the executive committee for their dedication to the club – only they know the work required to field 165 players each week.

The committee recognises that there is further room for improvement in the coming season, and look forward to the challenge of building on our performance of the past two seasons.

I would also like to thank the player’s partners and families for always being so willing to support our cricketing efforts! Your contributions help make STC the wonderful place it is. I would also like to thank all of our generous sponsors who are listed in this report. Their contribution is vital to our club’s success and I urge all club members to support these local businesses whenever possible.

The entire STC senior cricket club signed a code of conduct for all players at the start of this season. I am happy to report that we did not have one on-field incident that needed to be investigated, and I would like to thank all senior players for continually representing the club in a competitive manner, combined with the sportsmanship that we desire. I would like to give particular thanks to all selectors and captains for their wonderful contributions throughout the season.

The community of STC was called upon again this season, as we embraced other club members who had lost loved ones. Junior player Daniel Lagastes, junior parent Tony McCarthy, and past player Dan Murray have all passed away over the passed 12 months. As I mentioned at Senior Presentation Night, I am sure the Lagastes, McCarthy and Murray families could feel the love and support of the club during their time of mourning. It is during these difficult times that one realises that STC is much more than just a cricket club.

The club is lucky to have so many fantastic volunteers and it was a great pleasure to present some of our finest silverware on offer throughout the year. In a break from tradition, the best club person award was presented to two people this year. Dicky and Kylie Corbett could not be separated by the judges and both shared this award for their incredible contributions this season. Congratulations guys – and once again, thank you.

9 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

The 40th celebrations also saw the club induct decorated past players Chris Hoare and Mick Wignell into the STC Hall of Fame – congratulations to you both on receiving this top honour.

Finally, our highest honour, life membership, was granted to Tim Bach in recognition for his dedication to the club in many executive and committee positions during his time at STC. Tim is a wonderful role model for many at STC, and we are delighted that he has joined the life members club.

Moving forward to next season, I think the club has come to the crossroads, although I feel that we could not have arrived in better shape. As a club, we need to raise the bar of our on-field performances. This will only happen through a revised training regime, increased recruiting efforts and the hard work of the ‘next generation’ in senior players. I implore all of our senior players who are under the age of 30 to stand up and take ownership of our on field performances. As I said last year, the main ingredient in any rebuild is the commitment to hard work and the quality of the people involved. We have the resources – the hard work is all that it will take.

I look forward to seeing you next season.

Stephen Hoy President 2006/07

10 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Secretarys Report As our 40th season draws to a close, we take time to reflect on the season that was. A season complete with a full range of highlights and lowlights to be remembered by the greater club community for many years to come.

The highlight of the season was the 40th Anniversary Gala Ball, hosted by Paul Zennaro, and featuring a side-splitting address by Max Walker, a rousing performance by a mini Robbie Williams and an evening of good, old fashioned deathing to the soundtrack of Eat My Shorts. Special thanks to Peter Duncan for his event production expertise and amazing contacts, and to Dicky and Kylie Corbett for event managing such a mammoth event for our club. It was a night to be remembered by all.

While on the topic of social events in our 40th year, STC also sipped on cocktails at The Swan Hotel, answered vexing trivia questions at The Tower Hotel, and had a visit from the ‘fat man in the beard’ at the Christmas Party. We celebrated together as Neil Hodgson won the Basil, and drowned our collective sorrows as our boys lost their respective semi-finals. We commended club stalwart Jack Krohn on reaching 400 games, and we laughed with the Movember boys as they grew funny moustaches for charity (captured forever in the 40th year club photograph). We even heard Dicky Corbett on 3WBC, being interviewed about our great club. What a season.

Unfortunately, as is all too often the case, with the highs come the lows. This season, we lost too many of our own – a mother, a son, a father and a brother. We paused to remember Kathleen Sandilands, Daniel Lagastes, Tony McCarthy and Dan Murray. Our thoughts and prayers continue for the families and friends of these much loved members of the STC community.

As we look ahead to season 2007/08, we can hope for another year to remember, for all the right reasons. Thank you to all members, both on and off committee, who have supported me and subsequently the club this season. Without willing volunteers to assist the fifteen or so elected members who give their time to keeping the club alive, STC would not be where we are today – a powerful and viable club with a positive future ahead of us.

Juniors Report The Juniors had a difficult start to the year with two deaths in the Junior ranks. Daniel Lagastes, a promising young cricketer, tragically passed away in the pre-season and then Tony McCarthy, a very supportive father, passed away early in the season. A number of parents and senior players must also be thanked for their assistance at training. There will be a growing reliance on senior player assistance in the future to further develop our junior cricketers.

Thank you to all the parents that assisted as Team Managers, Scorers, Umpires, set up, canteen, transport, and everything else. Their support is invaluable and greatly appreciated. Social events were limited to two Wine and Cheese nights with the Parents versus Kids annual game being cancelled due to ground conditions.

13 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

First XI Report Looking to make the finals for the 6 th consecutive season, we started our 2006/07 campaign with a comfortable win against Boroondara. Our next two games were hard fought victories against Clifton Hill and Burwood Uniting Canterbury in which we snatched victory from the jaws of defeat. In the round two Clifton Hill game we were bundled out for 111 and were reeling when Clifton Hill were 0/51 off ten overs. However we managed to pull off a fantastic victory by taking 10/58 off the remaining overs. The following game we were in a similar predicament but again managed to secure a win, showing the winning mentality the side and club has built was still very much intact for season 06/07.

Going into the Christmas break we dropped two games against Wyclif and Trinity which left us in second position. Immediately after the Christmas break we took on Wyclif again who were on top of the ladder. We made 9/277 off our 80 overs at their ground which, as many of you would know, is not exactly batsman- friendly. Unfortunately the drought broke the following Saturday and the game was washed out so we were unable to defend our score which we were very confident in doing. Unfortunately, if we had taken the points in this game we would have finished top at the end of the home and away season. It was not to be and as history shows Wyclif finished top and went on to win the flag.

Having lost only two games for the home and away season, as well as scoring the most runs in the Macgibbon shield we were very confident leading into the semi-final. However the bowlers did their job and the batsmen could not, as we lost our second consecutive semi-final in a batting performance which can only be described as disgraceful. I won’t comment any further on the game, however I can assure you that the players involved will all be making amends next season.

Again there was change in the side this season with two players making their debuts. Russell Flint, a new player to the club, started the season in the First XI and finished the season in the First XI as he went on to win the Best First Year Player award. Well done to Rusty as we look to him to become an integral part of the First XI in years to come.

Aaron Johnston also debuted in the First XI this season and put in some fantastic performances, none better than his man of the match performance in the semi-final taking five and making 20* batting at 11. Johno went on to win the Most Improved Player award for the season. Unfortunately Johno will not be donning the red cap next season as he has moves back to Queensland due to work commitments, which is a massive loss for the side with Johno making such a huge impact this season.

I’d like to thank my vice-captain Luke D’Astoli who was of great support both on and off the field. I’d also like to thank the senior players of the side Glenn Elliott, Ro Worthy and Danny Sotiriadis for all their input and knowledge throughout the season. With players like this around it makes the captaincy a lot easier. I’d also like to farewell one of our senior players in Danny Sotiriadis who has left our shores to take residence in Ireland. Danny has been an integral part of the First XI for around nine years. His commitment to the side and the club cannot be questioned and it’s going to take some big shoes to fill (literally) to replace him, however I’m sure it won’t be the last time we’ll see the ‘Big Dan’ pull on the baggy red.

After another disappointing season we can only look forward. There will no doubt be changes within the side next season and hopefully improvement from those who are already in it. The junior program has never been healthier and this can only be a boost for the senior club in the years to come. The future is bright as long as we continue to work hard. See you all next season. GO SAINTS!

15 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Second XI Report The 2006/07 season for the Second XI was extremely satisfying with what the group achieved in the second part of the season however bitterly disappointing we missed out on the finals by three points. No doubt this must be the goal for the team next season.

Our campaign started poorly again losing the first game for the fifth year in a row. It wasn’t until round four that we won our first game, at this stage our batting was performing consistently well but we were lacking a strike bowler and struggled to bowl the opposition sides out. We followed up with L, W, and L and were looking no chance of making the finals or even having an impact on shaping them, we had to win the last five games! Round 8 win. Round 9 draw. Round 10 versus undefeated, top of the table Hartwell, we won a hard fought match, after such a great win as captain I noticed the team became more confident and hungry to take on all comers. Round 10 versus finalist BNU, with the introduction of young guns Colman and Kerr into the team the side had a great balance and mix of youth and experience. We batted first and made 258 highlighted by Jules’ 99. The following week in extreme conditions of heat we fielded all day and bowled them out for 230 – it was one of the toughest and best wins I have been involved with. Going into the last game needing an outright to make the finals we had already taken the six points on the first day. Alas the opposition held us out on the second day and we couldn’t scale the final hurdle put in front of us.

For the 2006/07 season the Second XI won six games, had two draws and lost four games for a total of 42 points for the season. A very strong performance, however not capped off with a finals berth. We are consistently dominating other Second XI clubs in Burt Shield but struggle with consistency against First XI clubs. We need to lift that extra cog, that is our challenge and the reward will be a finals berth. Once we are consistently strong in Burt Shield this will have a flow on effect to the First XI and put pressure on spots which has been lacking over the last few years. In summary our batting was held together by Jules (438 runs @ 39.82) who had one of the best seasons by an STC batsman in Burt Shield. The bowling was held together by Classon, Fraser and Molloy.

The highlights were the never give up attitude of the players who stuck together through some tough times at the start of the season and were rewarded with some spirited wins at the end. The promotion of Aaron Johnson to the First XI, the debut of Loz Colman and David Kerr as future Burt/Macgibbon players with Borg and Coyle in the wings is exciting for the club. Daniel Sharpe, even though struggling for runs he sacrificed his several times in run out situations, thus stating to the team no individual is greater then the team and that’s how we played out this season as a tight group of team mates.

Congratulations to the Junior program and the premierships won this year, it was a fantastic result for the whole club. Presentation night was sensational watching the Junior players presented with their red premiership STC caps in front of a standing ovation from all in attendance. Special thanks to Sharpey, Jules and Lynchy for their tremendous support and commitment throughout the whole season.

17 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Third XI Report Last season saw the Third XI finish fourth on the ladder, losing to the eventual Premiers in the semi-final. This year the aim was not so much about where we finished but how we played as a team and what young talent we might unearth. If we made the finals, it would be a bonus.

Throughout the season we used a total of 32 players. Some were seasoned campaigners such as Andy Murray, Rob Kimber, Jack Krohn, Matt Funnell and Mick McGrath. The experience and leadership these players brought to the Third XI was invaluable, especially to the young brigade at the beginning of their STC careers. Muzz and Rob were both fantastic with the bat, Rob also producing moments of brilliance with the ball. Phantom bowled to his usual lofty standards taking out the bowling award and Jack was a real asset behind the stumps. Mick took two wickets for the year.

It could be said that the Third XI had a rather inconsistent year. This was no more evident than in rounds seven and eight. Round seven saw us pass Heathmont’s total of 242 with the loss of only five wickets. The following round we were bowled out for a paltry 58, Blackburn passing us with the loss of only one wicket. The players were asked to put in a real effort at training and on match day for the remainder of the season. It was after this game that the young guns really stood up.

James “Splasha” Downey only played one game in the Third XI, but he showed during that game that he will no doubt play a high level of cricket at STC. Even though he had played an under 16 match the night before, he looked very much at home in a senior side. Dave “GoB” Kerr showed that he will be a thorn in the side of many opposition teams in years to come with both bat and ball. He looked very comfortable and confident with the bat in his hands, scoring his first 50 for the club in round nine. Beau “Ziggy” Coyle was great to have in the side, giving 100% whether he was batting, bowling or in the field. He knew exactly what role he needed to play with the bat and bowled with great pace and accuracy with the new ball. Another real shining light for STC in years to come. Ben “Borgy nights” Borg is the sort of player every captain wants in his side. He refused to give up whilst he had the bat in his hands and refused to give it up when he had the ball in his hand. Borgy would no doubt bowl an entire day from one end if given the chance, and do it very well. Pushing for twos selection towards the end of the year, Ben is sure to be a very successful cricketer and a great leader of our club. Lawrence Gregory (that’s his real name) Colman is probably the leader of the up and comers. Like the four previously mentioned, Loz gave it his all when he was batting, bowling and fielding. Loz’s great year with the ball was justly rewarded with his naming in the Second XI for the final two matches of the season. Loz missed out on the bowling award by one single run, or .06 of a %. A fantastic effort by a player who has a great career ahead of him.

As one of the more senior players said to me during the season, watching the young guys in the side develop lifts everyone else and makes it an absolute pleasure to play alongside them. I am certain the guys named above will play in the First and Second XIs for STC in the very near future, and for this reason, season 06/07 was a huge success for the Third XI and for the club.

Finally I would like to thank the committee, including the selection committee for all their work throughout the season. There can be no doubt that the club is heading in the right direction thanks to the long hours the members of the committee donate to the club.

19 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Fourth XI Report This was a tough year at the selection table with over 40 different players gracing the field for the Fourth XI. I look at this year as a missed opportunity, with the side finishing three points out of the finals.

However, there were many positives and highlights to come out of the 06/07 season: Four STC juniors played in the Fourth XI Young U16 junior Andrew Krohn playing every game We won 50% of our games and beat two of the sides in the finals With a high turnover of players we stayed competitive plus a good spirit in the team Playing with Jack “Wallaby” Krohn in his 400th game The last game of the year against Heathmont trying for an outright win – an all-round great effort Bowling – Stirling Rowe & Dan Smith were the standouts Batting – a couple of hundreds made by yours truly

Despite not playing a part in the finals this season, the team will be back bigger and better for next season and hopefully one step further.

Finally I would like to thank my vice-captain Stirling Rowe and deputy vice-captain Paul Zennaro for all advice and support throughout the season and the selection committee for putting up with some colorful selection nights. Last but not least I thank the committee for there support as well and to everybody who played in “Fighting Fourth Eleven”.

21 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Fifth XI Report A very good home and away season for the Fifth XI whose efforts returned 11 wins and four losses with a ladder position of second. It is worth noting that due to an error, a point was deducted by the league and we were kept from top spot on superior percentage.

45 players contributed to a semi final berth in which not batting for 40 overs – yes the cardinal sin – cost the Fifth XI a flag chance – next year!

There were a few all time 5th XI records broken this year: 1st , 2 nd , 3 rd & 5 th wicket partnerships – 228*, 184, 138, 93* Highest individual score – Fennessy N, 146* Highest aggregate score – Hodgson N, 855 Most wickets in a season – Hodgson N, 27

Highlights Rohan McDowall, new to wicket-keeping acquitted himself very well after Christmas Stuart Hamilton found a new way to contribute to the club, not easy for the chap I know, but he donned the whites, fielded like Ponting & caught like a sea lion being thrown a fish Simon Hearn & Alex Ross are real prospects with the ball, the latter taking his first two wickets in the same game his dad scored a hundred in – Cathe would have used a couple of rolls of film in old money Angus Hamilton shows extreme promise in all aspects of the game, batting maturely, showing the rest of the team where the keeper wants to receive the ball when throwing, keeping wicket himself and testing all with his ‘offies’ at training Four batsmen reached the magical figure, six times in total There were three five wicket & four four wicket hauls and some very useful supporting bowling

There are some key points to take from this season & remember for next. Not everyone can train for a variety of reasons, work & associated travel, family etc – this does not detract from their commitment to STC. The on-field behaviour of the players was commendable.

23 STC South Camberwell Cricket Club 2006/07 Annual Report

Club XI Report It was an honour to captain the fighting sixes this year. My job was made a lot easier by Eugene Fitzwilliam who not only took over the reins whilst I was out injured, but was also a great support by fulfilling the onerous task of weekly online commitments. Thanks Fitzy.

The season started strongly with a win over Preshil – then continuing impressive form throughout the season by “old guns” Josie Murray, Fitzy, Michael Mitchell and Rob Hoich. This led to us going into the Christmas break on top of the ladder.

There were a number of highlights during the year. Notably Rick Zambelli – three centuries including two tons against the might of North Balwyn. The consistency of Josie Murray opening the innings, always off to a flyer and always putting the opposition on the back foot.

The game against Donvale provided two of the great bowling performances of the year with Mitch with the ball on a string taking 5/4 off seven overs. Could have been 6/3, bad luck Josie and Glen Edwards 5/24 to dismiss Donvale for 33. Great effort guys.

And how about Tom Bach? 190 against fifth placed Camberwell!!

The season was a blend of youth with “young guns” Angus Hamilton, Tom Beaton, Mitch Moore and Julian Morris, together with “codgers” like Pat and Bernie Docherty. Mind you I think the “codgers” took over in one match with the resident statistician concluded that 1500 games of experience and an average age of 40.1 should get us over the line. It didn’t .

The team spirit this year was just fantastic with Chops Gordon out injured and still turning up every week and running drinks for the boys. Andrew Webb and Glenn Edwards pushing through the pain barrier in the last over semi-final loss to Glen Iris and Stewie with his non stop enthusiasm keeping the team on track.

Although the year ended in disappointment, we can take strength from the fact that although finishing third we beat the eventual premier Glen Iris once and lost in the last over twice, including the semi-final. Both games we could have won.

In conclusion I would like to thank everyone who played this year, the selectors and committee for all their help and advice during the year. I am sure that next year the “Clubbies” can take the next step and reap the ultimate reward.
