9 Presidents Report When looking at our off-field performance, season 2007/08 was another great year for our entire club. What was achieved off the field was exceptional, while our junior club was also very successful winning two premierships. Again, on the field, the senior club finished the year without the results that we had expected. Our work ethic at training will always determine our performance on a Saturday. As a club, we need to learn that until we raise the bar on a Tuesday and Thursday, we will always fall short on fulfilling our potential. We have to work harder on the field!

The committee was magnificent this season, and we certainly delivered some great results. We introduced some new blood this year and their enthusiasm was fantastic. Thanks to Stirlo, Shwatta, Luke D’Astoli, Loz, Dan O’Connell and Tommy Casha for their exceptional debut year on the committee.

The junior bandwagon rolled on this season and you can read all of the highlights in Stuart Hamilton’s report. Stuart has been an outstanding in his role as Junior Vice-President, and the success of our juniors again this season is a reflection of his hard work and commitment. Thanks also to Basil Finnigan, who never fails to inspire us, for his support of our junior cricketers. As is often stated, the juniors are the future of our club and it is up to each and every senior player to support our junior program. It was sensational to see so many junior cricketers step into senior positions this season – a policy that I am sure we will build on over coming seasons. I would like to thank Jack Krohn, Steve O’Connell, Steve Ross, Pete MacDonald, Tim Bach, Tom Casha and Chris Classon, as well as all of the junior parents and other assistants, for all of their outstanding efforts with the juniors this season.

I would also like to thank all of our generous sponsors who are listed in this report. Their contribution is vital to our club’s success and I urge all club members to support these local businesses whenever possible.

The club is lucky to have so many fantastic volunteers who are always digging deep for us. It was an honour for me to present Steve O’Connell with the Best Clubman Award for 07/08. This season, Steve was 1 st XI Captain and our U16 Premiership Coach. He also managed the very successful $2000 draw (with help from the Corbett’s as usual – thanks guys!), and was willing to help out around the club in any way he could. Steve has come along way since his early years as a senior player, and he is the right man to lead STC back to the top. However, he needs the right team behind him giving him plenty of support and moving in the same direction. I am sure the incoming committee will provide Steve with all of the support required.

This season also saw the induction of our 20 th life member, the highest honour at STC. Garry Chard was presented with life membership in recognition for his dedication to the club in many executive and committee positions during his time at STC. Chardy is a wonderful role model and friend to many at the club, and we congratulate him on this well-deserved honour.

As I announced to the club earlier in the year, I will not be applying to be re-elected next season. I would like to give a special thank you to the Executive Committee that has been unchanged for the last 3 years - Peter Lynch, Kylie Zennaro, Ed Behan and Stu Hamilton. These guys have done a truckload of work for the club and have been a wonderful support to me. Thank you so much for all of your hard work. I walk away knowing the club is in a very healthy position off the field. Our future looks very bright.

Lastly, on the field, the challenge is ahead of us to lift our work ethic and to play to our potential. As I have said before, the main ingredient to achieve success is the commitment to hard work and the quality of the people involved. We have the people – the hard work is all that it will take!

Go Saints!

Stephen Hoy President 2007/08

The Juniors had another great year for the club. Although we lost one U10 and one U12 team, the numbers were more manageable at training on Tuesday nights. Basil Finnigan worked hard trying to turn our young cricketers into stars and received valuable assistance from a number of senior players and parents. There will be a growing reliance on this assistance in coming years if the club is to continue the onfield success.

Thankyou to all the parents that assisted as Team Managers, Scorers, Umpires, set up, canteen, transport, etc, etc. Their support is invaluable and greatly appreciated.

Junior social events were limited this year due to my involvement with the ECA Junior Executive and the Junior representative teams. We were also limited again by the drought conditions.

12 First XI Report This year I’m going to keep it brief as I’ll wait until we win our elusive 2 nd flag in Macgibbon to make all your ears bleed.

In a nutshell our home and away performance was again fantastic however our semi-final performance was again left wanting. We won 9 home and away games, our only loss being a disappointing loss to Deepdene. We also had a washout against Boroondara and a rain affected draw against Clifton Hill. Apart from this our home and away form could not be questioned and we were chock full of confidence going into the finals, two and a half games clear on top. However our form eluded us when we needed it most and we put in an all round poor performance with both bat and ball.

In a season where there was no team or club success in there seniors there were a few individual highlights. Congratulations to Lukey on winning the treble, taking home the Basil, club champion trophy and Macgibbon player of the year in a fantastic season. Thanks also to Lukey for his on-field leadership as my vice-captain, and I put the challenge to Lukey to go on and perform at an even higher level next season as we know he can do.

Well done also to Ro Worthy who won the Macgibbon shield bowling trophy; finally some personal success for Ro who has been our most exceptionally consistent bowler over the past four years.

We also had five debutants for the 1st XI this season. Congratulations to Beau Coyle, Adam D’addazio, Sammy Gupta, Dom Doyle and Dan Fogarty on making their debuts this year. It’s always fantastic to see new blood coming into the side! Congratulations also to Foggers in winning the best first year player award after playing his entire first season in the ones.

An issue I do want to address that has become more and more prevalent over the last few seasons is player availability in the 1 st XI. Apart from the semi-final there wasn’t one game during the season where we were able to pick our best possible side as players consistently made themselves unavailable. This not only disrupts the 1st XI through being able to select players on merit, it affects the other five sides even more. I understand people have work commitments or the occasional wedding but I urge all aspiring 1 st XI players, if you want to become an integral part of the STC 1 st XI make yourself available for the whole season. There will be no more armchair rides next season, things are going to change.

Finally I’d like to thank Steve Hoy for his support as President over the past three years. As we all know Steve is moving on from the committee next year and it’s been a great pleasure to work alongside him over his three years at the helm. Although he only enjoyed limited success on the field Steve has definitely left the club in a better position, with an ever-growing junior program and bank account!

All we can do now is put 2007/08 behind us and look to the future. There will be a change of attitude and personnel within the 1 st XI and the club as a whole. We will pull out all of the stops for on-field success which has escaped us in recent times. I challenge all senior players at the club and the 1 st XI especially to take the bull by the horns, stand up and be counted when it matters most and do your part to put STC back on the premiership train! GO SAINTS!

14 Second XI Report After narrowly missing out on the finals in 2006/07, the Second XI began the season hoping for nothing less than a stint in the finals for 20 07/08. With a new captain and vastly different team to begin the year, determination was strong and hopes were high.

Round 1 saw the team come up against arch rivals AYC, runners up from last year and unfortunately we went down in a last over thriller. But it was a solid start to the season and left us in good spirits. Our round 2 opponents, North Balwyn Combined had been demoted from the MacGibbon Shield and were always going to be a good indicator to where we stood as a Burt Shield team. A fantastic batting performance saw us come away with a comfortable 6 win, leaving us at one win, one loss and full of confidence.

Eventual semi-finalists Preshil were our round 3 opponents and after a solid batting performance we set Preshil a target of 231 to win. All looked under control with an outstanding bowling performance by Lawrence Colman, who at one stage had our opponents at 4/26 and leaving them at 4/40 at stumps. But it was here that our good formed ceased. We went on to lose the game and failed to win another match until we met the same team again in round 9, obviously dashing our finals dream.

The Second XI only managed one more win, against Hartwell Uniting, leaving the season tally at 3 wins, 8 losses and 2 draws and saw us finish 7th on the ladder. Luckily the STC Second XI managed to remain in the Burt Shield for the upcoming season. Although the season proved to be relatively unsuccessful, there were numerous positives to take away. Having fielded 25 players throughout the season it was pleasing to see the amount of youth representing the Second XI, many of whom will be pushing for 1st XI selection in the coming seasons.

Tom , who was awarded the Most Improved award for this season proved that he can not only hold his own as a batsmen at this level but also prove to be dangerous with the ball, consistently bowling tight wicket taking spells. Ben stepped up as a genuine strike bowler, with good pace, movement and variation. Ben will no doubt have a successful career at the highest levels of STC cricket . Beau Coyle who began the season in the Second XI, ended up playing several games in the First XI making valuable contributions with both the bat and ball. Furthermore, James Downie, Dave Kerr, Angus Hamilton and Andrew Krohn all donned the whites for the Second XI in season 07/08 and will no doubt have successful futures in the top sides for years to come.

Other highlights included: → Record 3rd wicket partnership of 218 between Julian Di’Stefano (143) and Stephen Hoy (107) → Angus Hamilton representing the Second XI at the young age of 13 → Dom Doyle figures of 7/49 of 30 overs over two innings in a seesawing game against Blackburn Nth Uniting → The emergence of Andrew Greenfield as a genuine wicket taking opening bowler, who consistently was able to dismiss the gun bat of many opposition clubs

The challenge now awaits us in the upcoming season to ensure that once again STC becomes a powerhouse in the Burt Shield. To make sure that we continue to encourage and support the youth of our club which will inturn guarantee our success as the best club in the ECA!

16 Third XI Report Season 2007/08 for the 3 rd XI was another productive one for the club in the most important area of unearthing new talent. As has been the case over the past few years, a number of young cricketers have shown what talent they have with bat, with ball and in the field. In summary, season 07/08 consisted of 4 wins – 6 losses – 1 tie and 1 wash out with the side finishing fifth on the ladder.

No one remembers, nor do they care about who finished fifth, so back to the young punks. The players that really stood out in my mind were, in no particular order:

James ‘Splasha’ Downie – Played 7 games in the 3’s and 2 games in the 2’s – undoubtedly a player of the future, both in cricket and with the women. Ben ‘Jonty’ Rodan – Played 7 games in the 3’s and 3 games in the 2’s – Ben’s one of those guys that will be hard to get rid of at 11am at the club in the coming years, much like Chardy. Tim ‘JJ’ Sharpe – A real keeper of the future and showed he has the patience of Jack Krohn with the bat, thus the nickname JJ, or Junior Jack. JJ thinks he’ll be a player with the women. Andrew ‘Junior’ Krohn – The original Junior and a real bowler of the future. Not sure about the chains and wife beater but who knows what the young lady folk like these days. James “Tizzle on the Fizzle” Terrill – STC’s answer to Andrew Symonds. Our allrounder of the future and quite probably the next Australian Idol.

Some brief highlights of the season that was: → Dave Kerr – 147not out in round 3 → Peter Morrison – 5 and 37not out in round 6 → STC – 4/400 V Richmond Union after they put us in to bat in round 7 → Loz Colman – 81 in round 11, and has he stopped talking about it yet? → Peter Lynch – 125 in round 12, one of the greatest knocks I have seen

Some brief lowlights of the season that was: → I lost the first 10 tosses in a row → Tom Casha in round 9 bowled 4 overs 0 maidens and took 0/50 → Morrow captained two matches for two losses, one of which I couldn’t play in because I was at a BBQ → Steve O’Connell was dropped to the 3’s for disciplinary reasons in round 3. He made 0 with the bat and went for 37 off 5 overs with the ball. The selectors were vindicated.

In the final round of the season the old deaths of the 3 rd XI had the pleasure of playing cricket with three players that all looked very much at home in the 3’s with bat, ball and in the field. Tom Beaton, Simon Hearn and Fabian D’Addazio all did themselves very proud and showed once again that the future of the STC Cricket Club is very bright. The captain of the opposition went out of his way to speak to each player after the game, such was his high regard for them.

Fabian had an especially good day with 1/11 off 5 and 28 not out.

So another season crossed off the list. Things are looking great for STC, with many of the junior cricketers ready to take the next step, many of the senior cricketers keen to start winning flags again and Shippa stepping down as President.

18 Fourth XI Report The fourth XI in 2007/08 was affectionately known by all involved as the Pirates.

It was an identity forged during the wee hours of the morning at the Palace Hotel in Camberwell by Peter Morrison and myself. A randomly chosen name that, despite its meaningless origin, described the journey that was undertaken by this strange collection of cricket lovers.

Throughout the season we played the game we all love with enthusiasm – working to improve ourselves and represent STC with pride. We always played to win, but regardless of the situation we never took either ourselves or our cricket too seriously.

The Pirates were a development side, and the greatest success we enjoyed all season was the improvement in both the younger players in the team, along with the players that hadn’t been given a serious chance to improve in previous years.

I would like to single out the efforts of a core group in recording the success of the season: → quite possibly our youngest Pirate, Angus Hamilton, went on to win both the bowling and team champion award – underlining his incredible season and the huge future ahead of him; → the young man we affectionately knew as D’Fabio (Fabian D’Addazio) who grew in stature from a slow start to the season to be one of the first players selected every week; → former junior players James Tyrell and Harshan Jeyakumar – who grew in confidence, improving their cricket and displaying great dedication to STC; → other former under 16s that played some games during the season, including Tim Sharpe and James Downey; → development players like Matt Francis and Jeremy Knox – who stuck at their game all year and will be far better cricketers in October 2008 than they ever have been before due to their dedication; → my old friends Rob Kimber, Steve Ross, Nick Fennessy and Jack Krohn who provided guidance to the younger players and support to me throughout the season; → the quasi-fading stars Mick McGrath and Stirling Rowe – both premiership team mates of mine and dear friends – who were the best opening combination since Geoff Lawson and Brad Gilbert; and → all the other players that played in the team last year and contributed to our success.

History will show that we reached the grand final this season and were beaten by a far better side. The reality was a little different. We played a better side, but we almost beat them. Losing by three wickets to a team that hadn’t lost a game all season was an excellent effort.

As a team we represented STC with pride in the final game of the year – but STC stood by the Pirates and showed support that our opponents would never had seen. As a team we concluded our season by thanking all the individuals that supported our finals campaign, including the many players that helped us at training and the literally hundreds of people that came to the game and cheered for us.

Despite our failure to win the grand final, it was our journey through the finals that best depicted the season. D’Fabio and young Angus won the man of the match awards in the two finals we played – supported in both matches by STC games record holder Jack Krohn and other veterans including Rob Kimber and Steve Ross. In short the Pirates were about teaching the next generation and having fun with all involved.

Finally I would like to thank all the Pirates – including Stuart and Lucy Hamilton, Enio D’Addazio, Garry Terrill, the two Caths and my lovely wife Kylie.

I sure enjoyed the ride!

20 Fifth XI Report The 5 th XI in season 2007-08 was the team of the club for the club. This was evident in the make up of its participants. Throughout the season, those to represent the 5 th XI included: → 53 players in total → 7 former 1st XI players → The 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 6th XI captains → 5 U/16’s, 3 U/14’s

The ethos of the 5’s this year could be summed up as “to have fun”. Even though what most people who play cricket want to do is be in a winning team, what’s the point if it’s no fun? As a result each week every member of the team was given the opportunity to participate and succeed.

Everyone who came into the team this year strived to do their best for the team, regardless of ability. The willingness to do the best for the team, and in some cases sacrifice their owns game was what contributed to the success of the 5’s in terms of performance, team spirit and enjoyment.

The season provided many memorable highlights: → Rohan Mcdowall scoring two centuries for an aggregate of 539 and an average of 89.83 to take the batting award → Billy Hynes taking the team all-round award and bowling award with 20 wickets and 289 runs → Paul Fisicaro scoring a maiden 150* → Sam Bach wining the man of the match award with a team top score of 30. It was Sam’s first game of cricket since juniors 10 years ago → Ben Mannix scoring 133 in his only game in round one → Darren Hubbard’s last game of competitive cricket for STC, and his man of the match performance in the semi final → A dramatic 1 run victory in the semi final, and a fantastic partnership by Ed Behan and Darren Hubbard to bring it home → Ed Behan’s 3 wickets in the Grand Final, to put us in a position to win → The emergence of some great young talent – watch out for Tom Beaton, Simon Hearn and James Ford in the future → Brendan Hoy’s return to STC and out-performing brother and club President Stephen → Greg Spithill’s first game for STC in 25 years! → Daniel Smith’s bowling – always brilliant.

Some big thank-you’s to the following people: → Jack Krohn for his help with selection, usually helping find players to fill a side at the last minute → Billy Hynes for not only an outstanding performance individually (Billy was clearly the best bowler in the competition all year) but his support and guidance as a former captain and friend → Rohan McDowall for thinking outside the square and providing fantastic advice and guidance → Paul Fisicaro for helping me back my own judgment, and showing me the way to stick to a plan → Richard Corbett for his great support each week, especially when he thought it was his time to bowl! → Justin Murray for his support as a fellow LOC captain → Darren Hubbard for his help setting up Stamp West EVERY home game → The support of everyone who played in the team throughout the year → Especially though, to my wife Lina, for her love and encouragement

It was a great year for the 5’s this year. Unfortunately we weren’t able to win the most important game of the season. We can console ourselves by being beaten by the better team. However, we will always know that as individuals and as a team collectively we underperformed. There is unfinished business….

23 Club XI Report This season I could not have been captain of the Club XI without the support of Eugene Fitzwilliam who helped me no end with the team sheets, online ECA entry, and maintaining of the scorebook. Thanks Fitzy.

We had a core group of players who played most of the games for the season: Rob Hoich, Garry Chard, Graham Stewart, Andrew Gemmell, Rick Zambelli and Dragan Blazevic.

These guys formed the core of the Club XI, and were a constant help both on and off the field also.

I also need to thank Stuart Hamilton for contstatly being able to find me a few additional juniors to play with us very senior blokes on many Saturday mornings. We are very lucky to have such a great group of juniors on hand to offer games to, and the experience is rewarding for both seniors and juniors alike.

The selection committee did a great job this year, often not finalising sides until late on a Thursday night (well, that’s what I told the missus anyway!).

We had 41 players through the Club XI this season, with five players debuting in the Club XI, and six juniors showing us how to play cricket.

We won four games for the season, and drew one.

Some highlights of the season: → A great ton at the start of the season from Russell Flint (122*) → A good win against Boronia Churches → A first ball wicket for the club for Dragan Blazevic (also against Boronia Churches) → A competitive game in good spirits against Glen Iris (the team who beat us in last years semi-final) → Some great catches from Tony Michaelides, Fitzy, Andrew Gemmell and Chardy

Big Rick Zambelli tried hard with the bat, as did Rob Hoich, and I had a bit of a dip too. Webby, Andrew Gemmell, Stewey, Fitzy and I were the main bowlers this season. It was great to have some young guys like Andrew Krohn, Michael AhCann, Tom Beaton, Nick Cropley and Simon Hearn play with us too, showing us what to do with both the bat and ball (not to mention showing many of us up in the field as well!).

Thanks also to the Committee, Steve Hoy and Kylie Zennaro for the season too.

In summary, I think we had a bit of fun, which is what it is all about in the Club XI.

Over and out.
