"I could never live without you"... "Sorry Angel"... LES CHANSONS DʼAMOUR tells that story too. INTERVIEW WITH CHRISTOPHE HONORÉ The origins of LES CHANSONS D’AMOUR lie in pre-existent musical material: Did the fact of using pre-existent material alter the way in which you approached the songs written by Alex Beaupain... the screenplay? Iʼve known Alex ever since we were both twenty. He has composed the music for all of my LES CHANSONS DʼAMOUR tells such a personal story that I knew it by heart. For me, it was a big step We re-arranged Alexʼs songs with Frédéric Lo, who has worked notably with Daniel Darc to place emotion at the heart of a story, Iʼve never been able to do it before. This led to the - never losing sight of the fact that we didnʼt have a whole year ahead of us, nor the budget idea of a film in which the characters start singing as soon as they are in a state of love to bring in an orchestra. We tried to match our desire to our means and I think that this has because they are incapable of expressing it otherwise. I have always loved songs, the way ended up creating an aesthetic approach and a form of precision. People often talk about they allow you to express a strong emotion in a fleeting manner, with a permanent need the precision of an actor, about the right distance adopted by a director but the general for lightness. I have always been a huge fan of love songs, I can be moved by a French aesthetic approach of a film has to be just as precise. Alex and I did not want the songs popular song that, in theory, holds no interest for me musically, simply because I am to sound "cheap". The actors rehearsed a great deal with Alex. There was no question of me making a parody of the genre. I simply approached that the changeover from speech to song, then the return to speech again, looks completely it by saying, "This film is a musical because the characters can only express their feelings by natural... but, at the same time, something that is "not natural" takes place.

These films are identified as a ‘Parisian trilogy’ that overtly Christophe Honoré makes reference and pays tribute to New Wave films’ motifs and iconography, while musical offering a modern take on the representation of today’s youth in its modernity. Study- adaptation ing Honoré’s auteurist approach to film-making reveals that the legacy of the French Paris New Wave can elicit and inspire the personal style and themes of the auteur-director, and at the same time, it highlights the anchoring of his films in the Paris of today. H-France Review Volume 18 (2018) Page 1 H-France Review Vol. 18 (March 2018), No. 48 David A. Gerstner and Julien Nahmias, Christophe Honoré: A Critical Introduction. Detroit: Wayne State University Press, 2015. 272 pp. Illustrations, 118 black and white photographs. $ 34.99 U.S. ISBN 9780814338636 Review by Florian Grandena, University of Ottawa. Often labelled as “a provocative auteur” (p. 3), novelist/playwright turned filmmaker Christophe Honoré has, over the last 15 years or so, produced a consistent and challenging body of cinematic work. His first film effort, the 2002 haunting and most definitely underrated 17 fois Cécile Cassart, was a sombre heart-felt drama on loss and mourning, which focused on the eponymous protagonist’s rejection of motherhood and her slow self-reconstruction outside the so-called traditional family. However, Honoré is not famous for this particular film; rather, and somewhat unsurprisingly, it is his “urban” feature films that have attracted the attention of domestic and international critics, as well as French audiences. His “Paris trilogy” (Dans Paris, 2006; Les Chansons d’amour, 2007; and La Belle personne, 2008) is indeed made up of three important auteur films--important in both Honoré’s distinctive career and more generally in early twenty-first century French cinema--and thus deserve all the attention that David A. Gerstner and Julien Nahmias give them in their excellent book. Rich and complex in their own ways, Dans Paris, Les Chansons d’amour and La Belle personne are productions that subtly hint at the director’s own experience of loss and mourning while making multiple references to the history of art and film (mainly the French New Wave and Jacques Demy).

But just before Passover, a series of mishaps and a lovers’ quarrel exile the heartbroken Reuben back to Paris and his zany family— including Almodovar goddess Carmen Maura (Women on the Verge of a Nervous Breakdown, Volver) as his ditzy mom, and Truffaut regular Jean-François Stévenin as his lothario father. Scripted by director Mikael Buch and renowned arthouse auteur Christophe Honoré (Love Songs), Let My People Go! both celebrates and upends Jewish and gay stereotypes with wit, gusto and style to spare. The result is deeply heartwarming, fabulously kitschy and hysterically funny. AN INTERVIEW WITH MIKAEL BUCH What was your background prior to making your first feature film?
