Dawn Lucy (later Gaskin) was the first athlete I ever coached. Previously, she had made little progress for several years. In our first season together her improvement was such that the local newspaper was prompted to address her performances with this headline. ABSTRACT This study explores the history of English women's athletics, from the earliest references up to 1980. There is detailed discussion of smock racing and pedestrianism during the eighteenth- and nineteenth-centuries, but attention is focused on the period from 1921, when international and then domestic governing bodies were formed and athletics .became established as a legitimate sporting activity for women.

    EULOGY DELIVERED BY ALAN JONES AO HONOURING THE LIFE OF BETTY CUTHBERT AM MBE AT THE SYDNEY CRICKET GROUND MONDAY 21 AUGUST 2017 0 There is a crushing reminder of our own mortality in being here today to honour and remember the unyieldingly great Betty Cuthbert, AM. MBE. Four Olympic gold medals, one Commonwealth Games gold medal, two silver medals, 16 world records. The 1964 Helms World Trophy for Outstanding Athlete of the Year in all amateur sports in Australia. And it’s entirely appropriate that this formal and official farewell, sponsored by the State Government of New South Wales, should be taking place in this sporting theatre, which Betty adorned and indeed astonished in equal measure. It was here that in preparation for the Cardiff Empire Games in 1958 and the Rome Olympics in 1960, as the Games were being held in the Northern Hemisphere, out of season for Australian athletes, that winter competition was arranged to bring them to their peak. Races were put on here at the Sydney Cricket Ground at half time during a rugby league game. And it was in July 1978, as Betty was suffering significantly, but not publicly, from multiple sclerosis, that the government of New South Wales invited Betty Cuthbert to become the first woman member of the Sydney Cricket Ground Trust. Of course, in the years since that appointment, as Betty herself acknowledged, her road became often rocky and steep. 1 She once talked about the pitfalls, the craters and the hurdles. But along the way, she found many revival points.

    2017 USATF ANNUAL MEETING COMMITTEE REPORTS 2017 Athletes Advisory Committee Annual Report Submitted October 30, 2017 Purpose: The purpose of this report is to summarize the strategic goals and progress towards such of the USATF Athletes Advisory Committee in 2017. Strategic Goal #1: Athlete Funding & Support Increase athlete funding through prize money, stipends, Revenue Distribution Plan The RDP contract is being finalized between the national office and the AAC to ensure fair treatment and no room for interpretation. A plan for the 2018 RDP money (since there is no team to make and be paid for) is being presented to the national office. Athletes need to be paid on time, in a predictable manner. A schedule is being put together detailing when each type of payment can be expected (Tier payments, prize money, RDP), to which the national office will be held accountable. The Emergency Relief Fund was finalized in 2016 to provide emergency financial assistance to current or recently retired athletes facing a catastrophic event causing financial distress. In 2017, the fund was first used to help athletes in dire situations. USATF has funded the account initially, with the AAC being responsible for future fundraising. Strategic Goal #2: Domestic Competitive Opportunities It is important to the AAC that we continue to seek out opportunities for domestic competitions to reduce the dependency on the European circuit. 2019 will be an especially important year, as the World Championships will take place much later than usual (late Sept/early Oct). We will need domestic competitive opportunities in June, July and August of 2019.

We have been remind- ed of how true this is since a previously unknown virus transformed every aspect of our personal and working lives. It has been a time of great loss and we acknowledge and honor all those working in the front line who personally sacri"ce themselves by risking their lives daily. Our thoughts and condolences go out to the families and friends of all those a!ected by the pandemic. Covid-19 has also highlighted the underlying structural inequalities in our society. When we founded The British Student Doctor, we established our policy on diversity and inclusion, with equality and equity in publishing being a vital aspect of our mis- sion. We cannot be any clearer: Black lives matter. Black medical students matter. Black voices matter. In her editorial, Olamide Dada, a medical student from Cardi! University and Founder of Melanin Medics, voices that our current medical school curriculum does not equip medical students to provide optimum care for all. As medical students and doctors, we have the responsibility to ensure our curriculum is Dr Isabel Schulz inclusive and provides us with the knowledge to care for all patients regardless of their Southampton Medical School ethnicity.
