Ron Gluth, whose father operated Beaumont Hardware, 4303 N. E. Fremont St., from 1948 to 1970, said that during the 1950s, Beaumont had at least five gas stations. He recently recalled that Amalfi’s Restaurant, 4703 N.E. Fremont St., was once a Richfield gas station; and Foot Traffic, 4020 N.E. Fremont St., was the site of Sid Stein’s Chevron. RAINY DAY DELIGHT KENTON STREET

FAIRPhotos by Jane Perkins

very wet Sunday morning and afternoon failed to dampen the sprits of neighbors and vendors who turned out for the seventh annual Kenton Street Fair, in the North Portland neighborhood with the landmark Paul Bunyan statue. The event was held in the heart of the downtown Kenton commercial district, on North Denver Avenue between North Watts and North Willis streets. A children’s parade kicked off the festivities, followedA by the always popular Coaster Car race. There were three live music stages, a bicycle swap meet, a children’s activity area and more than 80 vendors huddled under tents along the street. Plenty of damp pooches were also in attendance, as Fang & Feather hosted its second annual Doggie Costume Contest. 22 THE HOLLYWOOD STAR NEWS WWW.STAR-NEWS.INFO: SERVING NORTHEAST AND NORTH PORTLAND NEIGHBORHOODS JUNE 2016 Sisters recycle fabric into unique accessories By James Bash For the Hollywood Star News

Stretching the concept of recycling into new territory, a company called 3 Green Sisters takes fabric that was destined for landfill and fashions it into uniquely artistic yet practical items for everyday use. Items such as handbags, purses, knitting bags, yoga mats, dog slings, table linens, and wine totes make up the product line for the 3 Green Sisters. Except there is no product line, because all of the items are handmade. In fact, all of the work on nearly every item is done right here in Northeast Portland. The 3 Green Sisters are three actual sisters: Suzanne Kinavey, Linda Rittler, and Jennie Wucherer. Kinavey lives in the Sabin neighborhood and honchos the marketing arm of the company (see 3greensisters. com). When I visited her, she had just finished cutting up a roomful of fabric with Rittler. Rittler, who lives in Clear Lake, California, is the chief wielder of scissors, and Wucherer, of Dublin, California, the designer and master seamstress. Kinavey came up with the idea of recycling fabric as handbags fifteen years ago. At that time, she owned a small employee benefits company and would travel to Portland to visit her daughter, who was in graduate school at the University of Portland. They enjoyed going to a store called Calamity Jane’s to buy beautiful, handcrafted purses. Teens may be old enough to get a driver’s license, but they may not be mature enough to drive safely. That’s one of the disturbing facts noted in the Teen Drivers Licensing Workshop at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. The workshop, one of several safety programs developed through Legacy’s Trauma Nurses Talk Tough, is aimed at more than young drivers. Parents are strongly encouraged to attend, too, said Cathy Bowles, the coordinator of the community education program. “I’m trying to empower parents to know what their role is with this driving piece,” said Bowles. “They need to be able to measure the child’s maturity. That’s fundamental to taking on the responsibility of driving.” In a recent three-hour class, offered on the third Wednesday of every month, Bowles and trauma nurse Shelley Campbell outlined factors that affect safe driving and decision-making. One is the prefrontal cortex of the brain, which is right behind the forehead. It helps people focus thoughts, plan ahead, make short- term decisions, and adjust actions or reactions in changing situations. Yet, it is one of the last sections of the brain to Hannah Bridges, 18, has been driving for about six months, after taking a hands-on driver education course in Vancouver, Washington. 1 JUNE 2016 WWW.STAR-NEWS.INFO: SERVING NORTHEAST AND NORTH PORTLAND NEIGHBORHOODS THE HOLLYWOOD STAR NEWS 29 HSTAR HOME & GARDEN Twelve tips from Tony on sprucing up for spring dream design build • Prepare your lawn mower for summer. Change the engine oil and sharpen the cutting blade. You’ll lengthen the life of the mower and improve the look of your lawn. • Check seals around windows and doors. Winter weather can crack and harden caulk and other weather seals. Inspect them now and repair and replace as needed. You’ll reduce your air- conditioning bill and could prevent water from entering your home and causing damage. • Clear vegetation around your air conditioner’s compressor. To work efficiently, the compressor needs good airflow. Prune any plant growth that could block it. • Drain your water heater. Sediment builds up in your water heater tank. Use the spigot near the bottom of the heater to drain it. By doing so, you’ll prolong its life and reduce your electric bill. • Clean your dryer vent. Not all lint is caught in the lint trap; some makes its way into the dryer vent. A clear vent will save you money by reducing the time your dryer has to run. A plugged vent not only wastes money, but could also cause a house fire. • Check the washing machine fill hose. Look for cracks that could become leaks. A leaky hose under pressure can cause major damage in a short period of time. • Clean and repair your window screens. Trying to reduce your electric bills this summer? You can keep AM your house cool (at least at night) by opening windows. Gently scrub on a flat surface with soapy water. Also, patch small holes, as needed. • Clean decks, driveways, fences and other outside surfaces. A pressure washer can make the work much easier. While you’re cleaning, inspect for damage that needs mending. • Fix cracks in your walks, driveway and the outside of your home. Unlike the human body, cracks What’s your dream? The coils you’ll find on the bottom or back of your refrigerator conduct the hot air from inside the unit. If they’re coated with dust, they do the job less efficiently and cause your Dream Design Build fridge to work harder. That means a higher electric bill for you. Use a vacuum cleaner hose or a brush to clean the coils. Nick Weitzer • Replace the batteries in your smoke detectors. You never know when you’ll need them.
