This was the first time an African- American had ever been nominated to this office. It was a momentous and revolutionary event. The bright African-American orphan son of a bright but tragic Kenyan father, who had died in a tragic car accident in 1982 in Kenya, after losing his career and his legs and struggling with alcoholism, and of a bright white mother who had died of cancer in 1995, was nominated for the highest office in the world’s mightiest country.
