Polk listing for Ann Obama In a separate listing, Ann S. Obama, Obama's mother, is identified as a student living at the 6085 Kalanianaole Highway address; Barack H. Obama, her husband, is listed as a student living at 625 11th Avenue. As WND previously reported, a Honolulu title search documented 6085 Kalanianaole Highway was purchased in 1958 by Orland Scott Lefforge, a University of Hawaii professor, and his wife/companion Thelma Young, who remained owners into the 1970s. Honolulu title records The Polk Directory shows Lefforge and Young living at 6085 Kalanianaole Highway in 1963, not when they purchased the home in 1958. Mother and son move to Seattle WND has separately documented that Ann Dunham was enrolled in extension classes at the University of Washington 15 days after Barack Obama Jr. was born. 3 of 6 The Polk directory for Seattle in 1961-1962 listed the residence for Mrs. Anna Obama, a student, at 516 13th Ave. E, apartment 2. Ann Obama residence listing in Polk Directory WND has also documented Dunham resettled in Seattle and did not return to Hawaii until after Barack Obama Sr. left the islands to begin his studies at Harvard in September 1962. Why Dunham did not resume her studies at the University of Hawaii after her son was born is unclear. The Honolulu Advertiser reported that in 1963, the grandparents moved into Apartment 110 at Alexander Street. The newspaper also reported that in 1963, after she returned to the University of Hawaii, Ann Dunham Obama's address was listed in a university directory as 2277 Kamehameha Avenue. 4 of 6 Records document she filed for divorce from Barack Obama Sr. on Jan. 23, 1964. In his autobiography, "Dreams from My Father," Barack Obama discloses that his father had been offered a scholarship from the New School in New York City that would have permitted him to bring his wife and son with him. Instead, Barack Obama Sr. took a less generous scholarship and went to Harvard. As WND has reported, the Hawaii Department of Health will not authenticate that the department issued the short-form Certificate of Live Birth, or COLB, released by the Obama campaign, listing Barack Obama Sr. as the father. WND has also reported President Obama continues to spend thousands of dollars on legal fees to block any court from ordering the public release of his long-form original birth certificate, which includes details such as the hospital of birth. Received 9 December, 2008; Accepted 1 September, 2009 In August 2008 the 47-year-old Barack Hussein Obama was elected by the U.S. Democratic National Convention as its nominee for President of the United States. This was the first time an African- American had ever been nominated to this office. It was a momentous and revolutionary event. The bright African-American orphan son of a bright but tragic Kenyan father, who had died in a tragic car accident in 1982 in Kenya, after losing his career and his legs and struggling with alcoholism, and of a bright white mother who had died of cancer in 1995, was nominated for the highest office in the world’s mightiest country. Soon Obama was leading in most public-opinion polls as the candidate most likely to become President, with a 10-point lead over John McCain, the Republican candidate. On November 4 he was elected President of the United States, the first African-American president in U.S. history. There had been nothing quite like this in U.S. history. David Lempert ABSTRACT: Barack Obama was the fi rst son of a PhD anthropologist to serve as President of the United States, and some popular press linked his political views and actions, which were allegedly in violation of international law, to failures in American anthropology to uphold in- ternational law as well as to personal failures by anthropologists to transmit the professional ethics of the discipline to their off spring. This essay examines those critiques and identifi es defi ciencies in anthropological presentations of ‘multiculturalism’ and in anthropology’s ad- herence to international law. It also reviews the cultural self-identifi cation of President Obama, drawing att ention to the sub-cultures of ‘expat’ communities like those in which President Obama was raised and in which many practising anthropologists and their children live.
