  • Sports in Pre-Modern and Early Modern Siam: Aggressive and Civilised Masculinities
Sports in Pre-Modern and Early Modern Siam: Aggressive and Civilised Masculinities Charn Panarut A thesis submitted in fulfilment of The requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of Sociology and Social Policy Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences The University of Sydney 2018 Statement of Authorship This dissertation is the copyrighted work of the author, Charn Panarut, and the University of Sydney. This thesis has not been previously submitted for any degree or other objectives. I certify that this thesis contains no documents previously written or published by anyone except where due reference is referenced in the dissertation itself. i Abstract This thesis is a contribution to two bodies of scholarship: first, the historical understanding of the modernisation process in Siam, and in particular the role of sport in the gradual pacification of violent forms of behaviour; second, one of the central bodies of scholarship used to analyse sport sociologically, the work of Norbert Elias and Eric Dunning on sport and the civilising process. Previous studies of the emergence of a more civilised form of behaviour in modern Siam highlight the imitation of Western civilised conducts in political and sporting contexts, largely overlooking the continued role of violence in this change in Siamese behaviour from the pre- modern to modern periods. This thesis examines the historical evidence which shows that, from around the 1900s, Siamese elites engaged in deliberate projects to civilise prevalent non-elites’ aggressive conducts. This in turn has implications for the Eliasian understanding of sports and civilising process, which emphasises their unplanned development alongside political and economic changes in Europe, at the expense of grasping the deliberate interventions of the Siamese elites.

  • Safe Haven: Mon Refugees at the Capitals of Siam from the 1500S to the 1800S
151 Safe Haven: Mon Refugees at the Capitals of Siam from the 1500s to the 1800s Edward Van Roy From the 16th to the early 19th centuries Siam received a series of migrations of Mon refugees fleeing Burmese oppression, as well as sporadic inflows of Mon war captives. Large numbers of those arrivals were settled along the Chaophraya River and at the successive capitals of Ayutthaya, Thonburi, and Bangkok. This article examines the patterns of Mon settlement at the successive capitals and the patronage system whereby the Mon were granted privileged status and residence in return for military services. It considers the Old-Mon–New-Mon tensions that were generated by the series of migrations, including those that marked the transition to the Bangkok era. In closing, it refers to the waning of Mon ethnic identity and influence within Bangkok over the course of the 19th century. That analysis of the Mon role provides fresh insight into the evolving social organization and spatial structure of the three consecutive Siamese capitals. Old Mon and New Over the course of the past millennium and more, a succession of Mon migrations crossed the Tenasserim Hills to settle in the Chaophraya watershed. Each new migration encountered earlier groups of Mon settlers. In many cases the encounter entailed tensions between the old and the new settler groups, and in each case the newly settled groups, or “New Mon,” became established communi- ties or “Old Mon” who were to face yet newer Mon immigrants. The distinction between Old and New Mon thus historically presented a “moving target” in the history of Mon migration into the Chaophraya watershed and their interaction with Thai civilization.

Communities’ Cultural Capital for Sustainable Community Tourism Development: A Case Study of Charoen Krung Road Chada Triamvithaya, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand Rattana Sangchan, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand Sujinda Suksai, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand Qiuli Zheng, King Mongkut’s Institute of Technology Ladkrabang, Thailand The Asian Conference on Education & International Development 2021 Official Conference Proceedings Abstract This research aims to study the knowledge factors and sustainable community tourism development in the area along the Chao Phraya River from Charoen Krung Road to Yaowarat Road, the charming old district and a multicultural society in Bangkok, Thailand. Primary data were collected from interviews of stakeholders or the people in the community in depth and within real-life context in a qualitative manner. The findings suggested that Thai, Thai Chinese, Thai-Muslim, and Vietnamese people are able to live together, relying on the social capital on two types of identities: 1) The multiculturalism society identity; and 2) The Chinese identity that has five similar dialect languages, such as the Hokkien or Fujian, the Chaozhou, the Cantonese, the Hakka and the Hainan. They have grouped together, built their trust among the community members through cultural and traditional activities of the community. That is until it becomes an important concept to create a multicultural social mechanism through religious systems such as temples, shrines, and mosques to manage the members of the heritage community. Furthermore, they can create strong mechanisms of a multicultural society and will be able to develop into sustainable tourism. The results of the research contribute to a role of the ownership in management in order to provide learning to the tourists visiting the community and indicate an issue of retaining tradition from modernization with its seemingly inevitable erosion of traditional societies.

Thailand covers about 513,000 square kilometres, stretching approximately 1,715 kilometres from north to south and 915 kilometres at its widest point from east to west. The country can be divided into four natural regions: the mountainous north, where temperatures are cool enough for the cultivation of lychees and strawberries; the north-east, a rolling semi-arid plateau bounded on the north and east by the Mekong River; the isthmus of the south with its hilly rubber plantations, fruit orchards, coves and bays; and the central region, the basin of the Chao Phraya River and a most fertile rice-growing area. This region has become the administrative, political and commercial centre of the country. Bangkok has a tropical monsoonal climate with high humidity, but it is located outside the typhoon belt.
