Book of Remembrance Remembrance2020-2021 a 5781 Book of Remembrance Remembrance2020-2021 A 5781 BETH TFILOH CONGREGATION Baltimore, Maryland 1 Remembrance 2 Book of Remembrance Yizkor Dates 2020-2021 • 5781 Yom Kippur ............................................. September 28, 2020 Remembrance Shemini Atzeret ...........................................October 10, 2020 Pesach - 8th Day .................................................April 4, 2021 Shavuot - 2nd Day.............................................May 18, 2021 1 This book is dedicated in loving memory to our teacher, friend and spiritual leader RABBI DOCTOR SAMUEL ROSENBLATT 1902—1983 who unselfishly devoted his life in service to the Beth Tfiloh Congregation and all its members. 2 MEMORIALN SERVICE The Significance of Yizkor One of the foremost generators of moral strength in man is filial piety, that feeling of loyalty that children entertain for the memory of their departed parents, that bond which binds together the inhabitants of two worlds—the world of the living with that of the dead. It is because it taps this well-spring of human emotions that the memorial service on the Day of Atonement, Yizkor, which is dedicated to resurrecting from the limbo of the past the personalities of loved ones who are no more, retains its universal appeal. No one who is imbued with the least particle of reverence for his or her forbearers will miss this opportunity on the holiest day of the Jewish calendar year for expressing what is in his or her heart toward those dear souls to whom he or she owes so much of his or her life and being. We know that what we are today is due chiefly to the way in which they who came before us conducted themselves. There can, therefore, be nothing more uplifting and purifying than to steep ourselves in the virtues which come to life again as we invoke the names of those who were once their bearers. 3 BETH TFILOHN CONGREGATION ROLL OF HONOR DEDICATED TO THE ETERNAL MEMORY OF OUR MEN WHO SERVED AND DIED IN THE ARMED FORCES OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA WORLD WAR II PVT. Exactly a year after his last album, the well-received Construction Time & Demolition, he's back with a new album, Transience. For every song of Wreckless Eric's you remember from his early days on Stiff Records, he's recorded 10 more that you've probably never heard. The early DIY British indie label may have been his entry-level position into the music business, but Eric Goulden didn't stop making music after the novelty of Stiff Records - and his being known as Wreckless Eric - wore off. Forty years on, Goulden is still making insightful music while the original label is but a footnote in music history. On Transience, Eric is joined by friends including acoustic 12-string guitar player Alexander Turnquist, Cheap Trick bassist, Tom Petersson, Amy Rigby on piano and backing TRACK LISTING vocals, jazz horn player Artie Barbato, and on drums Steve Goulding, late of Graham Parker & the Rumour - the first 1. FATHER TO THE MAN time he and Eric have recorded together since Eric's 2. STRANGE LOCOMOTION enduring hit "Whole Wide World" back in 1976. He wrote the songs on the move, alone in grubby rooms, in 3.

  • Neg(Oti)Ating Fusion: Steely Dan's Generic Irony by Ethan Krajewski A
Neg(oti)ating Fusion: Steely Dan’s Generic Irony by Ethan Krajewski A thesis presented for the B.A. degree with Honors in The Department of English University of Michigan Winter 2018 © 2018 Ethan Patrick Krajewski To my parents for music and language Acknowledgements My biggest thanks go to my advisor, Professor Julian Levinson, as a teacher, mentor, and friend, for helping me think, talk, write, and (most importantly, I think) laugh about seventies rock music. You’ve helped make this project fun in all of its rigor and relaxed despite all of the stress that it’s caused. I’d also like to thank Professor Gillian White for leading our cohort toward discipline, and for keeping us all grounded. Also for her spirited conversations and anecdotes, which proved invaluable in the early stages of my thinking. I wouldn’t be here writing this if it weren’t for Professor Supriya Nair, who pushed me to apply for the program and helped me develop the intellectual curiosity that led to this project. The same goes for Gina Brandolino, who I count among my most important teachers and role models. To the cohort: thank you for all of your help over the course of the year. You’re all so smart, and so kind, and I wish you all nothing but the best. To Ashley: if you aren’t the best non-professional line editor at large in the world, then you’re at least second or third. I mean it sincerely when I say that this project would be infinitely worse without your guidance.

  • Negus MQ 3 FINAL For
Narrative, Interpretation and the Popular Song Keith Negus FINAL VERSION submitted to Musical Quarterly February 2012 (prior to editing for publication). This text includes a minor amendment to acknowledge the passing of Walter Becker. For the published version go here – https://academic.oup.com/mq/article-abstract/95/2- 3/368/1009964?redirectedFrom=fulltext The text includes lyrics from Kid Charlemagne Words and Music by Walter Becker and Donald Fagen Copyright © 1976 UNIVERSAL MUSIC CORP. Copyright Renewed. All Rights Reserved. Used by Permission. Narrative, Interpretation and the Popular Song The value of narratives in human understanding of the world is widely recognized. The importance of narrative is apparent in varieties of everyday storytelling as well is in written fiction, drama, spectacle and ritual, visual art and film, architecture, legal proceedings, scientific reports and political theory, to provide a only partial list indicative of the range. Yet, the popular song - one of the most pervasive narrative forms that people encounter in their daily lives - has been almost entirely ignored in the vast literature on narrative.1 Whilst narratological methods have often featured in the interpretation of western art music2 and film music3, and although literary approaches to lyrics have sometimes emphasized a poetics of storytelling4, theories of narrative have rarely been foregrounded in the study of popular songs.5 In this article I will focus on narrative to explore practices of interpretation in both scholarship and everyday discussion about popular songs. I will emphasize the intersubjective interpretation of song meanings and advocate an “intercontextual” approach to the understanding of song narratives, drawing from research which emphasizes how our knowledge of the world is cumulative and always in a process of becoming through time.

  • PLAY IT by EAR: Motherhood & Songwriting
PLAY IT BY EAR: motherhood & songwriting "1 of "11 Sleep I swear, if the baby dies up there I’m going to sue the pants off this Doctor Marc Weissbluth! I was on the kitchen telephone with Patrick. Our boy, at that point just 4 months old, was crying in his crib upstairs. Wailing, actually. We’d been following the protocol in a book called Healthy Sleep Habits, Happy Child, which was even more hardcore than Ferberizing. The cry-it-out method was mildly controversial, but based on the book and my son’s temperament, it felt like the right choice. Contra the attachment parenting gurus, Weissbluth argued that young ones had to be taught how to fall asleep on their own, in much the same way as they eventually had to be taught to brush their teeth and use the potty. Once their brains had developed to receive and enjoy stimuli like parental attention, there was too much fun to miss and they’d resist their own tiredness. A parent was to spend the child’s earliest weeks and months being insanely vigilant about the signs of impending tiredness—to get to know your baby’s circadian rhythms as well as you knew your own. It was a different form of extreme attachment: emotional/intellectual rather than physical. I gave myself over to him and this process with the earnestness of a hard-science graduate student, literally charting my son’s alternating periods of wakefulness and exhaustion on square-ruled graph paper. And now was the moment of truth: leaving him in his crib.
