Texas Mountaineers Sport Route Cleaning Class
Texas Mountaineers Sport Route Cleaning Class This syllabus outlines the Texas Mountaineers’ (“TM”) Sport Route Cleaning Class, a prerequisite to the TM Sport Leading Class. The objecve is to demonstrate and teach students basic belaying of a sport leader and how to clean sport route anchors. It is not intended to discuss clipping bolts on lead, rope placement, climbing skills/movement, or advanced techniques (rope taking, dynamic belays, etc.). The class is open to all with a $40 class fee (not including gym fees). Although non-TM members must register and pay for membership at or prior to the class (download forms and pay at www.texasmountaineers.org). Current members have priority on the class list. Note that aendance constutes an agreement on the student’s behalf to assist at the next offering of this class. We typically meet in the evening at a local gym; locaon and me as determined by the coordinator. We will gather at one of the walls as instructors demonstrate belaying, leading and cleaning a sport route. Students will demonstrate cleaning sets of sport anchors (your feet will be no more than 5 feet off the mats), and will have the opportunity to repeat exercises unl comfortable with the techniques. Everyone has read the forms at the gyms and on the TM membership documents about the dangers of climbing. Climbing outdoors adds more variables to the mix - rock fall, bolt failure, wild animals, poisonous plants and no crash pads; plus inexperienced, ignorant or distracted fellow climbers (though the last bit is true at the gym and the crag). -

Chapter 10 – Orientation to Rope Management Upon completion of this chapter, you will be able to: • Describe the circumstances where the use of ropes and knots is appropriate for GSAR. • Compare and contrast the types of rope that are encountered in SAR and the relative advantages and disadvantages of each. • Describe and demonstrate proper rope care, handling, and management. • Define the following: dynamic rope, static rope, tubular webbing, flat webbing, accessory cord. • Recognize and demonstrate tying the following knots: Figure Eight on a Bight, Figure Eight Follow Through, Figure Eight Follow Through Bend, Ring Bend (Water Knot, Tape Knot, Overhand Bend), and Italian Hitch (Munter Hitch). • Define carabiners and describe their use. • Describe proper handling of carabiners. • Demonstrate a single point anchor. • Demonstrate the use of a rope for a hand line. • Demonstrate a belay for an assisted raise or lower using an Italian Hitch. • Use the appropriate belay signals during an assisted raise or lower. ORIENTATION TO ROPE MANAGEMENT Introduction The responsibilities of a GSAR member include the ability to perform basic rope management functions. This includes tying of rescue knots involved in a ground-based evacuation and, maintaining and managing a rope(s). This course qualifies the GSAR member to aid or assist in stretcher carries through uneven terrain under the supervision of a certified Ground Search Team Leader. It does not qualify the GSAR member to participate in technical rescues The occasions for which ropes and knots are required in GSAR are limited. The most likely circumstances necessitating their use include: • As a safety line for a stretcher carry on low angle slopes • As a hand line on a slope • As a tool in shelter construction It is recognized that some groups utilize more advanced rope management techniques such as rappelling or embankment rescue techniques in ground search applications. -

The student with the most winning times on the knots will win the competition, with a second runner up. Incorrectly tied knots or memory aids will disqualify quickest times. 1st Place - First choice of chocolate bar 2nd Place - Chocolate bar Knots to be Timed: 1. Square Knot (Reef Knot) The square knot can join 2 ropes of the same size. It is the first knot we learn to make with our shoelaces. It looks like a bow and is hugely unreliable. Its breaking strength is only 45% of the line strength. The simple and ancient binding knot is also known by the names Hercules, Herakles, flat, and reef knots. It helps to secure a line or rope around an object. It creates unique designs of jewelry. 2. Figure 8 Follow Through Based on the figure 8 knot, figure 8 follow through knot is one of the ways of tying a figure 8 loop the other one being the figure 8 on a bight. It secures the climbing rope to a harness thereby protecting the climber from an accidental fall. 3. Bowline The bowline (pronunciation “boh-lin”) is a knot that can itself be tied at the middle of a rope making a fixed, secure loop at the end of the line. It retains about 60% of the line strength and has a knot efficiency of 77%. 4. Barrel Knot It is a friction knot (or slip knot) meaning that it will self-tighten around the object it is tied to when loaded. -

THE ABSEILING HANDBOOK ABSEILING HANDBOOK Abseiling is a lot of fun and may offer an experience of exhilaration, personal challenge or adrenalin rush. However, abseiling is not really a “stand alone” activity, but rather a skill that is employed in the sports of rock climbing, canyoning, caving and mountaineering, so go on and try all the rock related activities. Abseilers need to be aware that it is an activity where serious injury or death can occur as a result of; Falling off a cliff. Falling rocks. Equipment dropped by others. Failure of anchors or equipment Misuse of equipment. These risks are minimised by abseiling activities being lead by qualified persons, and by training all persons participating in an abseil activity in cliff top safety, use and care of equipment and standard calls, prior to the activity. Therefore, to become proficient in abseiling requires more than reading the information contained in this handbook, which is only intended as a learning aid to be used in conjunction with proper instruction. To become proficient requires undertaking a basic rock-craft course in the first instance, followed by regular practice under varying conditions. All persons have the responsibility for taking care of their personal safety as well as that of others. Chapter 6 Chapter Basic Ropes & Knots 6 – Ropes & Knots 305 Seattle Fire Department ROPE Introduction In the Fire Service, the knowledge of how to tie and use knots is essential. While there are many knots available, the following knots described in this section should be adequate to meet the needs of Seattle firefighters in most situations Keep in mind that it is more important to be able to tie these standard knots automatically, while under the stress of an emergency, than to know a greater number of knots and yet have failed to acquire skill in their use. The ropes used on operation companies range in size from 1/4” woven cotton tie ropes to ½”” kernmantle nylon life safety rescue ropes. They can vary in length from just a few feet to 300 foot lengths. Ropes and knots are used daily in securing equipment, fire suppression, rescue work, and emergency medical applications. Whether working with rope or knots in an emergency or training, SAFETY should be on the mind of all involved. Rope Usage The Seattle Fire Department separates the use of ropes into two categories: Utility and Life Safety. Utility A utility rope is a rope that is used for any function other than that of life safety. Tie ropes, practice ropes, RIG ropes, roof ropes and other ropes that are marked as such all fall under the umbrella of utility rope. Life Safety Life Safety rope is defined as any rope used to support the weight of members or other persons during rescue, fire fighting, other emergency operations, or during training evolutions. -

HOW TO INSTALL ON KESTREL ROPE BRIDGE You can set up the rope bridge adjuster for operation by either your left or right hand. On your Kestrel, one end of the bridge rope is tied to the rope bridge loop on the right side of the saddle using a Fig- ure 8 on a bight. Leave this in place if you want to operate the bridge adjuster with your left hand. Otherwise, untie this knot. 1. Untie the rope from the carabiner, and untie the stopper knot on the end. 2. Tie the 10 mm cord onto the rope using a Triple Prusik knot. 3. Sandwich the prusik tender between the two eyes of the prusik cord and clip the cara- biner through all three. 4. Pass the end of the rope through the upper ring on the prusik tender. Tie a Stopper knot on the end of the rope. 5. Clip the carabiner to the rope bridge loop on the same side of the saddle as your strongest hand. 6. Tie the other end of the bridge to the rope bridge loop on the other side of the saddle using a Figure 8 on a bight. -
