TURNER1 & GERRIT DAVIDSE2 ABSTRACT. – Cerastium dubium is reported new to the Missouri flora from two counties in eastern Missouri. A detailed description is provided based on local populations. Cerastium dubium (Bastard) Guépin (= Cerastium anomalum Waldst. & Kit. ex Willd.; Stellaria dubia Bastard; Dichodon viscidum (M. Bieb.) Holub – see Tropicos.org) is a Eurasian member of the Caryophyllaceae. Commonly called anomalous mouse-eared chickweed, three- styled chickweed, or doubtful chickweed, its first reported appearance in North America was in Washington state in 1966 (Hitchcock and Cronquist 1973). Since then, the plant has been discovered in Illinois (Shildneck and Jones 1986), and is now known from scattered populations in several states bordering Missouri: Illinois, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, and Kansas. Yatskievych (2006) discusses C. dubium and mentions that although the species had not been reported in Missouri, its arrival is anticipated. According to Yatskievych, the plant generally resembles C. nutans or C. brachypodum, but with the unique characters of three styles and a straight capsule with 6 apical teeth at dehiscence. In March of 2012, while rototilling a garden plot at his residence near Labadie, in Franklin County, Missouri, the first author discovered a small population of plants unfamiliar to him, growing with Lamium amplexicaule and Stellaria media. The flowers of this plant were somewhat showier than the common Stellaria, with wider and less deeply cleft petals. The centers of the flowers were bright yellow due to anthers and profusely shed pollen. -

There were comments on various issues related to the new NARGS website, not all complimentary, and then it turned to the Quarterly online and raised some points about which I would be very pleased to have your views. “The good news is that all the Quarterlies are online and can easily be dowloaded. The older issues are easy to read except for some rather pale type but this may be the result of scanning. There is amazing information in these older issues. The last three years of the Quarterly are also online but you must be a member to read them. These last issues are on Allen Press’s BrightCopy and I find them harder to read than a pdf file. Also the last issue of the Quarterly has 60 extra pages only available online. Personally I find this objectionable as I prefer all my content in a printed bulletin.” This raises two points: Readability of BrightCopy issues versus PDF issues Do you find the BrightCopy issues as good as the PDF issues? Inclusion of extra material in online editions only. Do you object to having extra material in the online edition which can not be included in the printed edition? Anaphalis margaritacea pearly everlasting (continued) Background Information Anaphalis margaritacea can be found north to Alaska, the Yukon and Northwest Territories, east to Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, and south to North Carolina, Kentucky, Arizona, New Mexico and California. It is reported to be common throughout B.C. except in the northeast (Douglas et al. 1998). Growth Form: Rhizomatous perennial herb, with few basal leaves, alternate stem leaves light green above, woolly white underneath; flower heads in dense flat-topped clusters, yellowish disk flowers; involucral bracts dry pearly white; mature plant size is 20-90 cm tall (MacKinnon et al. 1992, Douglas 1998). Site Preferences: Moist to dry meadows, rocky slopes, open forest, landings, roadsides and other disturbed sites from low to subalpine elevations, throughout most of B.C. In coastal B.C., it is reported to be shade-intolerant and occupies exposed mineral soil on disturbed sites and water- shedding sites up to the alpine (Klinka et al. 1989). Seed Information Seed Size: Length: 0.97 mm (0.85 - 1.07 mm). Width : 0.32 mm (0.24 - 0.37 mm). Seeds per gram: 24,254 (range: 13,375 - 37,167). Volume to Weight Conversion: 374.0 g/L at 66.7.5% purity. -

Hwy 97, Redmond, OR 97756 Introduction Oregon has many wildfire prone areas. In these places, fires are a natural part of the changing landscape. As homes are built in these areas, special precautions must be taken by the homeowner to pro- tect their property. Installation of fire- resistive roofing is critical to preventing firebrands from igniting the home from a roof fire. Well maintained fire-resistant vegetation and irrigated landscape is also critical within close proximity of a home. These actions DO NOT insure that your home will survive a wildfire, but they provide for a good chance of structural survival. Implementation of FireFree [www.firefree.org] and FireWise [www.firewise.org] activities can also significantly improve chances of a home surviving a wildfire. Fire-resistant vegetation. When landscaping around a home, most homeowners are interested in creating a landscape that is aesthetically pleasing, compliments their home, and has varia- tions in color, texture, flowers, and foliage. If your home is located in or adjacent to forests or rangeland, you should also consider the flammability of plants within your home landscape. Flammable plant material in your land- scape can increase the fire-risk around your home. The 1991 Oakland Hills Fire in California is a prime example of how flam- mable plant material (Eucalyptus trees) can act as fuel and contribute to the inten- sity of a wildfire. -

Leaves opposite, simple, entire or dentate, usually with glistening glands. Flowers in lax or dense cymes often aggregate into thyrses, rarely solitary. Calyx (4- or) 5- (or 6)-dentate or -lobed. Corolla short tubed, slightly 2-lipped, margin entire or dentate; lobes 5, spreading; lower lobe larger, concave, fringed. Stamens 4, often strongly exserted, inserted on apical part of corolla tube. Healy: Investigation of Compounds in <i>Anaphalis Margaritacea</i> 93 Investigation of Compounds in Anaphalis Margaritacea Lauren Healy ABSTRACT The roots and tops from Anaphalis margaritacea, commonly referred to as Pearly Everlasting, were extracted using a mixture of ether and petroleum ether and analyzed through the use of various spectroscopic techniques. Dr. Ferdinand Bohlmann previously reported a thirteen carbon chlorinated polyacetylene found in the roots of Anaphalis species that was of much interest due to its structural similarity to known antibacterial and antifungal compounds. The goal was to successfully isolate and characterize this compound, known as (E)-5-chloro-2-(octa-2,4,6-triynylidene)-5,6-dihydro-2H-pyran, as well as identify other compounds previously unidentified in A. margaritacea. Although this particular compound has not been identified yet, various other compounds have, including terpenes, unsaturated compounds, and ring systems. -

This article is an open access publication Abstract Many melittophilous flowers display yellow and Dichogamous and diclinous species display pollen- and UV-absorbing floral guides that resemble the most com- stamen-imitating structures more often than non-dichoga- mon colour of pollen and anthers. The yellow coloured mous and non-diclinous species, respectively. The visual anthers and pollen and the similarly coloured flower guides similarity between the androecium and other floral organs are described as key features of a pollen and stamen is attributed to mimicry, i.e. deception caused by the flower mimicry system. In this study, we investigated the entire visitor’s inability to discriminate between model and angiosperm flora of the Alps with regard to visually dis- mimic, sensory exploitation, and signal standardisation played pollen and floral guides. All species were checked among floral morphs, flowering phases, and co-flowering for the presence of pollen- and stamen-imitating structures species. We critically discuss deviant pollen and stamen using colour photographs. Most flowering plants of the mimicry concepts and evaluate the frequent evolution of Alps display yellow pollen and at least 28% of the species pollen-imitating structures in view of the conflicting use of display pollen- or stamen-imitating structures. The most pollen for pollination in flowering plants and provision of frequent types of pollen and stamen imitations were pollen for offspring in bees. -
