Confidence Acceptance Respect Excellence Safety Education Matters The Year 7 students have kicked off the term learning about the laboratory equipment, how to write a scientific report and take accurate readings off the measuring tools. Last week, the students learnt about mixtures. The students investigated to find out if the solutes and the solvents are soluble or insoluble. Trying to create layers of colours from the different concentration of sugar solutions was not an easy task. It required the students to follow scientific procedures and use some skills to attain the best results. Many did not achieve the desired outcome on their first attempt. We reflected and discussed as a class about what worked, what did not work and ways to improve on the experiment. “It is common sense to take a method and try it. If it fails, admit it frankly and try another.” - Franklin D. Roosevelt

The Stars Girls are going on Vocation

Some of the Stars girls have been busy in their Vocational development planning, identifying areas of interest well and truly before their final high school year. A couple of the girls have secured part-time employment with Deja and Tara gainfully employed at the local IGA supermarket. The work will give them opportunity to develop a number of important transferable skills needed in which ever long term career they choose, such as communication, team work, attention to detail and many more. Skye is also excited to be filling in her employment paperwork this week after securing part-time work at the local pharmacy.

The team also enjoyed a visit to a large locally owned Excavation and Earthworks company, Phillips Earth Moving. The management team run by Lizzy and Steph, introduced the girls to their schooling and work history, the variety of roles the industry offered, and the big machinery they use to look after our roadways here in the . The Stars team have also commenced their ‘Day in the Life of’ Initiative. Shakira spent some time in the shoes of a police officer alongside Whitney at the police station. The time spent was designed to trial out her interest in the Police Force.

There are a number of other exciting things happening with the Stars team. Dakota and Jizelle have been selected to attend the AFL Camp in Darwin later this term. The girls will also host a visit from another town for a softball carnival to be held here at the school. Softball training is on every Monday after school. Come along if you would like to join. Volley Ball is off to a great start every Thursday at 5:30pm and a number of the girls are out at AFL Under 20 training every Tuesday and Thursday night. The team will also be putting their artistic skills to use in designing the artwork for the Women’s Health Week bag to be used across the country later this year. The artwork will feature on the International Women’s Day Banner to be carried in the March on March 8. This is a very exciting contribution. More to come on this later!

Please feel free to visit the Stars room, or contact Lida, Sophia or Jemma for information on all the above and more. Keep up with the Stars foundation as a whole on our website www.starsfoundation.org.au or check out the Foundation’s Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/StarsAustralia

Confidence Acceptance Respect Excellence Safety Education Matters The Year 10 students who selected the Robotics elective unit started the term learning how to fly a DJI Ryze Tello (drone). Students covered the CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) safety regulations, the structure of the drone and the features of the drone. The students learnt how to fly the drones and at the same time observe any possible factors which could impact the performance of the flights. The students came up with their desired flight routes, practised flying them and did a simple flight assessment to determine if they could fly the drones confidently.

Training Report - Term 1, Week 3 This week the Collingwood Football Club were in Tennant Creek to deliver their Next Generation Academy program to the talented young footballers in the and it was a pleasure for the Clontarf Academy to have them included in our Tuesday morning training session as one of their engagement events.

Their presence at the combined high school and primary school session no doubt contributed to a bumper turnout with 33 high school fellas and 17 primary schoolers attending the session. Add the dozen or so Collingwood crew to those numbers and you can well imagine there was not a lot of room to move on the high school oval, which is only about three quarters, the size of a normal full size oval. The session was followed by a bacon and egg barbecue breakfast.

The star attraction among the playing personnel was Darcy Moore, while former star player Tarkyn Lockyer was another high profile member of the crew. Later in the day Collingwood helped supervise a carnival that acted as a selection trial for the Barkly School Sports team for the NT Championships in late March.

Thursday morning’s high school session was attended by 18 fellas, which was still a good result when considering the limitations of only one vehicle available for pickups due to staff PD commitments in . The primary school session also had a good turnout with 16 on the track.

High schoolers that trained in at least one of the week’s sessions were: Year 12: Kalheel Galaminda, Zac Limerick, Pate Waqaicelua. Year 11: Isaac Alum, Maclloyd Bostock, Sawyl Dickenson, Nathan Dickson. Year 10: Myles Fitz, Andrew Green. Year 9: Boyd Cook, Aaron Crouch, Lauchlan Munckton, Andrew Peckham. Year 8: Ben Braun, Shannon Devery, Garth Dick, Nathrall Dickson, Tycelle Douglas, Kirk Grant, Style Hayes, Ackland Lauder, Jayden Miller, Tye Noonan, John Norman, John Ross, Kyle Smith. Year 7: Elijah Baker, Clayton Hayes, Nick Horwood, Jamie Jones, Rickardo Jones, Ziquarn Lauder, Declan Miller, Antonio Morrison, Kenetth Plummer, Junior Williams, Sylvestor Williams.

Imparja Cup Report

The Tennant Creek High School academy made a successful visit to Alice Springs in week 3, winning the Imparja Cup Clontarf Academy Schools Division grand final. The victory was a major achievement for a group of young men from a town that does not have a junior cricket competition. Their undefeated run through the competition against two Clontarf Academy teams from Centralian Middle School and another from Yirara College was complemented by a great display of sportsmanship on the field and excellent behaviour off it. The team followed the lead of Captain Boyd Cook, who cast a steadying influence over the young side. He was one of only two Year 9 students in the team, along with the side’s Best and Fairest award winner Chris Limerick.

The remainder of the team was: Year 8 students: Ben Braun, Shannon Devery, Nathrall Dickson, Jayden Miller and Kyle Smith. Year 7 students: Elijah Baker, Jamie Jones and Sylvestor Williams. Nathrall Dickson won the team’s Clontarf Spirit award and Shannon Devery won a special talent award decided upon and presented by New South Wales Imparja Cup stalwart Troy Cooley. Troy has been involved with New South Wales since they first played in the Imparja Cup as a player, coach and team manager. The award winners from other sides also had a Tennant Creek connection with two former Tennant Creek High School academy members, Junior George and Jo Jo Johnson winning the Best and Fairest awards for their respective teams. Yet another Tennant Creek High School Academy member Lachlan Dunemann represented Tennant Creek in the Major Centres Division and won the award for the Division’s Best Player.

After winning three out of three round robin games, Tennant Creek High School qualified for the grand final played against Yirara College, who batted first. Yirara were initially scoring quite freely until Shannon Devery put the brakes on with a three wicket over that helped restrict the opposition to a respectable total with a spectacular Ben Braun catch on the boundary another highlight of the team’s fielding effort.

Coach Con Power’s structure of the batting order for the grand final proved to be a masterstroke, with the short in stature opening combination of Shannon Devery and Jamie Jones providing a solid and steady start. The third pairing of Chris Limerick and Boyd Cook then set up the victory with a whirlwind partnership featuring several towering sixes.

Also deserving of a special mention was the outstanding fielding by Elijah Baker that included a three catch effort in one of the round robin games where he pulled in a spectacular one handed reflex catch as well as a difficult diving forward low to the ground effort in the outfield.

The behaviour of the fellas throughout the trip was excellent as was their team camaraderie and the sportsmanship displayed towards their opponents.

They may have gained an advantage over the other teams with some extra practice on the eve of the games when attending a Cricket event in Todd Mall. The event featured a game of cricket utilising the iconic landmark as a pitch and the lads were invited to join in and enjoy an hour long session with bat and ball. After playing they sat down on the lawns to watch a cricket documentary on a giant inflatable screen. The documentary featured the Indigenous cricket team tour of England in 2018, which was held as part of the 150th anniversary of the Indigenous side that was the first ever Australian cricket team to tour Eng- land in 1868.

After the cricket on Friday the fellas enjoyed some bowling in the evening, but this time it had nothing to do with cricket, with a visit to the Dustbowl for 10-pin bowling winding up the day’s itinerary. Jayden Miller and Elijah Baker showed some genuine talent with the bigger bowling balls, both managing to score in excess of 100.

Training Report - Term 1, Week 4 - 21stFebruary 2019

The excellent numbers on the training track continued through both sessions this week with 24 fellas making it out on Tuesday and 23 on Thursday. In addition, Clontarf alumni Bronson Plummer and Troyston Corbett also trained Thursday morning. It was great to see Troyston back out for the first time this year, while Bronson is now working as classroom support at the high school and has trained at every session so far. Having those quality senior footballers join in adds plenty of value to the sessions through the knowledge and experience of the game they pass onto the younger fellas, who genuinely look up to them as football role models.

Primary school training attendance has also continued to attract good numbers with 20 training on Tuesday and 15 training on Thursday.

All up 31 high schoolers trained in at least one of the week’s sessions and they were: Year 12: Nathaniel Dickson, Pate Waqaicelua. Year 11: Maclloyd Bostock, Nathan Dickson. Year 10: Andrew Green. Year 9: Boyd Cook, Aaron Crouch, Andrew Peckham. Year 8: Shannon Devery, Garth Dick, Nathrall Dickson, Tycelle Douglas, Style Hayes, John Norman, John Ross, Kyle Smith. Year 7: Elijah Baker, Maxton Finlay, Clayton Hayes, Nick Horwood, Jamie Jones, Rickardo Jones, Andre Kelly, Ziquarn Lauder, Antwone Miller, Declan Miller, Antonio Morrison, Kenneth Plummer, Thane Sampson, Junior Williams, Sylvestor Williams.

Those fellas that made it to both trainings this week were invited to join in with a “Good Bunch Lunch” at recess along with the fellas that have achieved a 90% and above school attendance rate so far this term. Clontarf Tearm

The students connected the tri-colour and mono-colour LED lights to the controller. The controller was connected to the laptop. They used graphical programming to customise the intensity of the LEDs, the colours, the intervals of the colour-change etc. The students have taken the first step towards building more sophisticated circuits in the future. with Kevron and Clay

Through Health promotion Kevron and Clay over the last few weeks have been exploring topics such as Healthy Eating and Re-Think your Sugary Drinks. Kevron separated foods into good foods and bad foods, even giving the foods a thumbs up or down.

No germs on me! was the next topic, by using the glitter bug and glow power to identify germs on their hands after washing them. Water sensory for Clay seemed to be a winner! Kevron went on to draw germs on printed giant hands.

Next stop was learning about the human body, Kevron was able to point out and place many of the human body parts back onto the human model, with Clay also checking out the kidney’s and dialysis filter.

March 1st was Clean Up Australia Day, where people volunteer around the country to clean up parks, beaches and other community areas. Here at Tennant Creek High School we looked at our own back yard and a group of student volunteers spent time picking up litter from the school grounds. Senior students supported by taking photos, picking up litter, or slicing fruit for our hard workers.

Tennant Creek IGA kindly donated the gloves and bags needed for the clean-up, as well as fruit and water for our hardworking participants. Thank you!
