Banned Books Week is an annual event launched in the 1980s to promote intellectual freedom. Public frequently use this week to turn a spotlight on current and historical attempts to censor books in public institutions and the harms that can result from . "Censorship is a dead end!" We invite our patrons to join us in celebrating Banned Books Week 2020 - and our freedom to read whatever we want! Page 2 Shred Event Perry will host a shred event with The Shredder of Des Moines this fall, from 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturday, October 10. Everyone is invited to take advantage of this opportunity to shred old records and documents right here in town, free of charge! Look for The Shredder truck in the library south parking lot. Mark your calendars, clean out those closets and filing cabinets, and dispose of your old documents in a safe, secure way. This event is sponsored by Perry Public Library and the City of Perry. Donations are welcome.

Family Evening Pumpkin Party Families with young children are invited to register for a free fall event called Family Evening Pumpkin Party, held virtually on our website (www.perry.lib.ia.us) via Zoom, at 6:00 p.m., on Thursday, October 8. Each family who registers will receive a free kit containing a pumpkin, craft supplies, and ingredients to make a snack. Miss Suzanne will demonstrate a craft, as well as how to make Pumpkin Seed Trail Mix during the live Zoom presentation. Registration is required for this event, so party kits can be assembled for each family to pick up, curbside, prior to the program. After the program, families may email a picture of their carved or decorated pumpkins to Miss Suzanne to share on the library website. Call 465-3569 or email [email protected] to join the party.

Virtual Fall Storytimes are Underway Zoom sessions for the Community Helpers Family Storytime unit are underway, but it's not too late to join the fun! Families with children ages two to five years may register for the free Storytimes, accessible from our library website, from 10:15-11:00 a.m., on Wednesdays. The unit will continue throughout the fall and beyond. Pre- skills, stories, songs, hands-on activities, and simple crafts will be integrated into the Zoom programs, and accompanying activity kits will be available for curbside pick-up for registrants ahead of the programs. Wee Wonders recorded programs for babies (infants-18 months) are now posting on our website on the second and fourth Thursdays of the month, an ongoing series. Free activity kits and books are part of the programs, and registered participants may pick them up curbside, during library open hours. What this means for https://bridges.overdrive.com/ library patrons is that RBdigital content has transferred to Overdrive, and we will now access former RBdigital ebook and audiobook offerings from the State Library of Iowa Bridges Overdrive website: https://bridges.overdrive.com. The RBdigital APP will now direct you to the Libby APP and instructions for its use with Overdrive when you try to check out an ebook or audiobook. Information about continuance of other RBdigital content is unknown at this time, but access to the /educational video and audio content currently remains available through the RBdigital APP. October Zoom Craft Club Perry Public Library staff will host the October 2020 virtual Craft Club event on Monday, October 12, at 6:30 p.m. The featured craft is Ombre Wood Pumpkin Sign, and the registration deadline is Monday, October 5. Anyone may join us for Zoom Craft Club, but participants must register and pay the $5 materials fee by the deadline to receive the craft kit needed for the monthly craft.
