TOWER ROAD FOOTPATH IMPROVEMENTS The next phase of a long-standing road improvement scheme in St Helier is nearing completion. As long ago as 1953 the Parish Assembly approved a scheme which would see Tower Road, a narrow twisting lane that links Mont à l’Abbé with First Tower, widened and provided with footpaths on both sides of the road. Since that date, slow but steady progress has been made, and the latest section on the north side of Tower Road will provide a much needed safe refuge for pedestrians, bounded by a new granite wall skilfully crafted by Parish masons. The land required for the scheme was purchased for £30,000, with a similar figure expended for construction work. Further improvement in Tower Road PARISH ORGANISES NORMANDY VETERANS TOUR for both pedestrian and vehicular safety is planned in The Constable has made arrangements for members of the coming years, with the hope of providing a continuous Normandy Veterans Association to visit the cemeteries, footpath from top to bottom. landing beaches and museums of Normandy again this year. On 30th January 2013 at a Parish Assembly, parishioners approved the redevelopment of Conway Street Toilets. The proposed work will entail the demolition of the existing inadequate toilet building and the boarded up café next door to construct modern vandal-proof facilities, keeping the ladies, gents and disabled toilets on the ground floor.

On first and second floors office space will be offered at market value rent to start-up companies or charities. These new facilities will provide local people with job opportunities and offset the cost of maintaining the building.

The new development will greatly enhance Conway Street by improving this prominent corner, which will in turn enhance FIRST TOWER SCHOOL On May 16th, with help from the streetscape and tie all the buildings together. YOUNG MUSICIANS OPPORTUNITY St Helier’s twin town, Bad Wurzach, has invited a group of young musicians to take part in a performance in our twin town on Saturday 26th October (the beginning of autumn half term). The Bad Wurzach Partnerschaft Committee have offered to pay for the travel for our young people and to provide host family accommodation in what promises to be the trip of a lifetime. The concert would suit a small ensemble (e.g. piano and three to four wind or string instruments) and the Constable would like to hear from any young parishioners (although there is no upper age limit!) so that he can organise the trip. Because the concert happens at the beginning of half term, this is an ideal opportunity for some family members to join the young musicians and experience what our twin town has to offer.

About 45 former internees, family members and friends attended a service held at the War Tunnels’ Memorial Garden, led by Rev. Iain MacFirbhisigh, followed by Chairman Clive Armstrong reading out the names of those who did not return, during which Rosanna and Lillian Armstrong (granddaughters of a former internee) laid a red rose on each of the twelve memorial plaques. This was then followed by a cream tea.

For all the criticism of the former Waterfront Enterprise Board, they did manage to get some T things right. The remodelling of the approach road to the Elizabeth Harbour is a case in point. This road was originally built as part of the Underpass Scheme, and was a dreary and utterly utilitarian approach road. WEB made the wise decision to upgrade this into a dual carriageway, creating an avenue with sense of arrival for those approaching from the ferry terminal. This project included generous tree planting down the sides and middle, along with equally generous landscaping. Pavements are segregated from the roadway, and stylish street lights complete the scheme. The trees are now slowly maturing, and look fantastic illuminated with lights at Christmas. The planting is imaginative, with daffodils in the spring, roses in the summer, and even Jersey lilies later in the year.
