A Guide to the Shabbat Morning Service at Heska Amuna Synagogue Common Terms and Phrases Adonai (lit. sir or master) – word that is substituted for the holiest of God’s personal names, YHVH, in Hebrew prayer. The prayer book in use at Heska Amuna translates this word as Lord. aliyah (pl. aliyot) – a Torah reading. Also, the honor of reciting the blessings for a Torah reading. The aliyot on Shabbat are: (1) Kohen (3) Shelishi (5) Hamishi (7) Shevi’i (2) Levi (4) Revi’i (6) Shishi (8) Maftir amidah – standing prayer, the central prayer of every service. Aron Kodesh (lit. holy ark) – the cabinet housing the Torah scrolls when not in use. b’racha (pl. b’rachot) – blessing. barukh hu u-varukh sh’mo (lit. praised is He and praised is His name) – the congregational response whenever the prayer leader begins a blessing with barukh attah Adonai (praised are You, Lord). At the end of the blessing, the congregation responds with amen. bimah – the raised platform at the front of the sanctuary where the Ark is located. birchot hashachar – the morning blessings, recited before the start of shacharit. chazarat hashatz (lit. repetition of the shatz) – the loud recitation of the amidah following the silent reading. chumash – the book containing the Torah and Haftarah readings. The project title itself is more than letters and numbers. The meaning is as equally important as each song. The (JAK2) V617F is a chromosome mutation causing several types of myeloprolifirative leukemias, including Lieberman’s disease (post Polycythemia Vera Myelofibrosis). After battling leukemia for six years, Lieberman’s newly released "Terminator V617F" was produced and completed just two months after receiving news that the cancer has become terminal. With a third round of unsuccessful chemotherapy in progress, The Gangsta Rabbi would once again tread against the grain, doing things his way. The Brooklyn-born musician has built a successful career off his unorthodoxed approach. Lieberman became a legendary staple within the industrial rock genre largely due to his signature use of distorted bass, guitars and other instruments. -

Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies Session Many of us in the field of modern Jewish studies have felt the need for an active working group interested in discussing our various projects, papers, and books, particularly as we develop into more mature scholars. Even more, we want to engage other committed scholars and respond to their new projects, concerns, and methodological approaches to the study of modern Jews and Judaism, broadly construed in terms of period and place. To this end, since 2001, we have convened a “Works in Progress Group in Modern Jewish Studies” that meets yearly in connection with the Association for Jewish Studies Annual Conference on the Saturday night preceding the conference. The purpose of this group is to gather interested scholars together and review works in progress authored by members of the group and distributed and read prior to the AJS meeting. 2006 will be the sixth year of a formal meeting within which we have exchanged ideas and shared our work with peers in a casual, constructive environment. This Works in Progress Group is open to all scholars working in any discipline within the field of modern Jewish studies. We are a diverse group of scholars committed to engaging others and their works in order to further our own projects, those of our colleagues, and the critical growth of modern Jewish studies. Alternative selections are offered each shabbat: a shorter reading (around twenty verses) and a longer one (around thirty verses). The readings are a guide and congregations may choose to read more or less from within that part of the parashah. On certain special shabbatot, a special second (or exceptionally, third) scroll reading is read in addition to the week’s portion. Haftarah readings are chosen to parallel key elements in the section of the Torah being read and therefore vary from one year in the triennial cycle to the next. Some of the suggested haftarot are from taken from k’tuvim (Writings) rather than n’vi’ivm (Prophets). When this is the case the appropriate, adapted blessings can be found on page 245 of the MRJ siddur, Seder Ha-t’fillot. This calendar follows the Biblical definition of the length of festivals. -

Question: How can a Jew promote oneself professionally and socially without violating Jewish norms of modesty (tzi’ni’ut) in communication? Put another way, in light of the fact that in social media people actively seek affirmation (likes, shares, etc.) for their posts and the fact that some jobs even require the generation of such quantifiable affirmations, how can and should a Jew living in this social and professional environment participate in it while still observing traditional Jewish norms regarding modest speech? Answer: Introduction Now that our colleagues, Rabbis David Booth, Brukh Frydman‐Kohl, and Ashira Konisgburg have completed their rabbinic ruling on modesty in dress,1 I intend in this responsum to continue their work in a related area, modesty in communication. In a companion responsum, I will also discuss harmful communication. In this responsum in particular it is important to note at the outset that many of the norms that are discussed could be understood, on the positive end of the spectrum, as either laws obligating a particular form of behavior or, in contrast, as aspirational modes of behavior (middat hassidut), and, on the negative end of the spectrum, some will straddle the line between legally prohibited and permitted but discouraged. -

Boone, Advisor Johanna Devaney Anna Gawboy Copyright by Dana Lauren DeVlieger 2016 Abstract “Whiskey in the Jar” is a traditional Irish song that is performed by musicians from many different musical genres. However, because there are influential recordings of the song performed in different styles, from folk to punk to metal, one begins to wonder what the role of the song’s Irish heritage is and whether or not it retains a sense of Irish identity in different iterations. The current project examines a corpus of 398 recordings of “Whiskey in the Jar” by artists from all over the world. By analyzing acoustic markers of Irishness, for example an Irish accent, as well as markers of other musical traditions, this study aims explores the different ways that the song has been performed and discusses the possible presence of an “Irish feel” on recordings that do not sound overtly Irish. ii Dedication Dedicated to my grandfather, Edward Blake, for instilling in our family a love of Irish music and a pride in our heritage iii Acknowledgments I would like to thank my advisor, Graeme Boone, for showing great and enthusiasm for this project and for offering advice and support throughout the process.
