RAFFA, The University of Texas at Austin The approach of the seven-hundredth anniversary of Dante’s death is a propi- tious time to recall the events that drove him from his native Florence and marked his life in various Italian cities before he found his final refuge in Ra- venna, where he died and was buried in 1321. Drawing on early chronicles and biographies, modern historical research and biographical criticism, and the poet’s own writings, I construct this narrative of “Dante’s Political Life” for the milestone commemoration of his death. The poet’s politically-motivated exile, this biographical essay shows, was destined to become one of the world’s most fortunate misfortunes. Keywords: Dante, Exile, Florence, Biography The proliferation of biographical and historical scholarship on Dante in recent years, after a relative paucity of such work through much of the twentieth century, prompted a welcome cluster of re- flections on this critical genre in a recent volume of Dante Studies. -
Katabasis in Eliot's the Waste Land
“I had not thought death had undone so many”: Katabasis in Eliot’s The Waste Land Research Thesis Presented in partial fulfillment of the requirements for graduation with research distinction in English in the undergraduate colleges of The Ohio State University by Noah Mastruserio The Ohio State University May 2018 Project Advisor: Professor Sebastian Knowles, Department of English 1 Introduction Of the many works referenced in Eliot’s The Waste Land, Dante’s Divine Comedy holds the most prominent position. Eliot’s dedication to Pound on the title page alludes to a line from Purgatorio, and Dante makes an appearance in every section of the poem, either by direct quote or veiled allusion. Such an association brings Dante’s journey through the Underworld to the forefront of the mind when reading The Waste Land, and provides one of the easiest avenues toward unpacking the poem’s density. But I propose that the poem’s exploration of the Underworld extends beyond a kinship to Dante and toward a deeper structural and thematic debt to the narrative of the katabasis, the descent into the Underworld. I suggest that the five parts of The Waste Land can be united via a traditional katabasis narrative, a narrative of metamorphosis and self-refinement. The katabasis is only one of the many classical and mythological structures Eliot employs throughout the poem. Already thoroughly explored in criticism are his use of the Grail legend1 and the burial and rebirth of a dying god figure. Less so is the appearance of the katabasis in the poem. The poem’s debt to Dante is obvious, but the presence of katabasis extends beyond Eliot quoting pieces of Inferno. -

religions Article “And Lo, As Luke Sets Down for Us”: Dante’s Re-Imagining of the Emmaus Story in Purgatorio XXIX–XXXIII Jane Kelley Rodeheffer Humanities/Teacher Education Division, Seaver College, Pepperdine University, Malibu, CA 90263, USA; janekelley.rodeheff[email protected] Received: 6 March 2019; Accepted: 28 April 2019; Published: 14 May 2019 Abstract: This essay will suggest that Dante’s journey through the earthly paradise in the Purgatorio is a figural representation of the journey of Cleopas and the unnamed disciple on the road to Emmaus in Luke 24. By making several references to the Gospel of Luke, Dante seems to be setting the stage for the reader to understand his own pilgrimage through the Garden of Eden as a retelling of the Emmaus story in the context of the Church Triumphant. Indeed, reading Luke 24 alongside Cantos XXIX–XXXI of the Purgatorio helps students to unpack the complex images of Dante’s experience in light of the themes present in the Emmaus story. For example, the concealment of Beatrice’s face and the gradual unveiling of her beauty mirrors Christ’s gradual revelation of his nature to Cleopas and the unnamed disciple. Cleopas and his companion also walk away from the promise of God revealed in Christ by leaving Jerusalem, just as Dante “took himself” from Beatrice and “set his steps upon an untrue way” (XXX 125, 130). In developing these and other parallels as well as elaborating on their significance for the latter cantos of the Purgatorio, this essay will attempt to establish a pedagogical approach to Books XXIX–XXX that draws on students’ recollections of the familiar Gospel text of Emmaus, which Dante clearly intends (among others) as a resource for appreciating his vision of an essential passage in Christian life. -

Plath Profiles 361 Review of The Spoken Word: Sylvia Plath (British Library 2010), ISBN: 978-0-712351-02-7 and The Spoken Word: Ted Hughes: Poems and Short Stories (British Library and BBC 2008), ISBN: 978-0-712305-49-5 Carol Bere Dramatic, visceral, occasionally mesmerizing, memorable—there is little question that these separate recordings from the archives of the BBC and the British Library of live and studio broadcasts of Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes reading their poetry offer sheer pleasure in themselves. Yet let me offer a brief caveat at the outset: this review is in no way meant to be a comparison of the poetry of Plath and Hughes, or a critical analysis of the ways in which they influenced each other's work—although I do assume mutual influence at various stages in their writing (and lives)—but rather a commentary on the separate BBC recordings, and perhaps a recognition of areas or periods of intersection in their careers. Hughes obviously had a much longer career, and these BBC recordings (two discs) reflect a span of over 30 years of writing, while the Plath recording (one disc) includes poems and interviews beginning in late l960 through January 1963. Along with knowledgeable introductions to the recordings by Peter K. Steinberg (Plath) and Alice Oswald (Hughes), respectively, these recordings are also invaluable guides to the early work (particularly in Plath's case), "hearing" both poets in the process of becoming, and, perhaps, gaining additional perspective on the poetry of both poets. What is also apparent in these recordings of Plath and Hughes is the necessity, or more realistically, the benefits of hearing poetry read aloud to fully understand the range of a poet's enterprise and achievement. -

Plath Profiles 275 Sylvia Plath and Ted Hughes: Layers of Literary Collaboration and the Perpetuation of the Poetic Voice Natalie Chambers The partnership of Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath was arguably one of the most mutually productive literary pairings of the twentieth century, and while the work produced during their six-and-a-half year marriage was substantial in its sheer volume and artistic merit, the bulk of the critical discussion regarding their partnership focuses not on their prolific literary production but on the marriage itself and the events that led up to Plath's suicide in February of 1963. While countless books and critical essays have been written, at a distance, about this relationship—their partnership and the tumultuous passion that fueled their creative fires—these texts are inextricably rooted in speculation, cultivated by critical hypotheses and, ultimately, dependent upon the interpretations of outsiders. Even the most in-depth investigations of their marriage and respective works—like the many biographies and essays written by major Plath scholars Susan Van Dyne, Jacqueline Rose, Lynda Bundtzen, and Anne Stevenson, as well as the biography of their marriage written by Diane Middlebrook—still remain mere versions of the truth, individual interpretations of the details that constituted a collaborative life, the work it created, and the eventual culmination in Plath's death. It is not uncommon for artists to gain posthumous notoriety and critical attention, and thus sell more of their work, as was the case with Sylvia Plath. Though her death was undoubtedly a tragic loss of talent and silencing of a powerful poetic voice, it also evoked a conflagration of public and critical interest in her work and created a flurry of activity among the literary community to publish it. -

Bodies and Self-Disclosure in American Female Confessional Poetry
THE EUROPEAN JOURNAL OF LIFE WRITING VOLUME X (2021) SV33–SV56 Bodies and self-disclosure in American female confessional poetry Carmen Bonasera University of Pisa Abstract Far from being a mere thematic device, the body plays a crucial role in poetry, especially for modern women poets. The inward turn to an intimate autobiographical dimension, which is commonly seen as characteristic of female writing, usually complies with the requests of feminist theorists, urging writers to reconquer their identity through the assertion of their bodies. However, inscribing the body in verse is often problematic, since it frequently emerges from a complicated interaction between positive self-redefinition, life writing, and the confession of trauma. This is especially true for authors writing under the influence of the American confessional trend, whose biographies were often scarred by mental illness and self-destructive inclinations. This paper assesses the role of the body in the representation of the self in a selection of texts by American women poets—namely Sylvia Plath, Anne Sexton, Elizabeth Bishop, Adrienne Rich, and Louise Glück—where the body and its disclosure act as vehicles for a heterogeneous redefinition of the female identity. Having enjoyed the thrill of watching Pivoine win one of the season’s most important handicaps, closely followed by Beat The Bank battling back to win a second Summer Mile, the ecstasy of victory was replaced in a split second by a feeling of total horror with Beat The Bank suffering what could immediately be seen to be an awful injury. Whilst winning races is important to everyone at Kingsclere, the vast majority of people who work in racing do it because they love horses and there is nothing more cruel in this sport than losing a horse, whether it be on the gallops or on the racecourse.
