  • Ideas from 2004 Seminars
Taiji – Daoist Principles in Practice. THE DEATH OF A MASTER. By Patrick A Kelly, October 1993 (Originally published in the St Benedicts st Taiji-school Magazine and also in the American “Tai Chi” magazine) In December 1992 ten thousand Taiji exponents felt the loss of their teacher, Master Huang Xingxiang (Huang Sheng-Shyan). He died in Fuzhou, China, the place of his birth 83 years earlier – having returned there a few months before his death after 43 years spent living and teaching in first Taiwan then later Singapore and Malaysia. He left behind approximately 35 independent schools throughout Malaysia, Singapore, Australia and New Zealand. Each of these schools has professional instructors and many have more than one hundred students. The first of these schools were formed over 30 years ago in Singapore and East Malaysia. I personally established a school in Auckland New Zealand in 1979 after 7 years training under Master Huang and his senior instructors and being accepted as one of his personal pupils in 1978. Master Huang was well known and respected in Chinese martial arts circles around the world for the subtlety and strength of his internal power and his ability to use it in the Taiji pushing hands. Unfortunately few Westerners ever experienced his abilities first hand and many disbelieved his skill and felt the need to convince others of their disbelief with rational arguments founded on lack of personal experience. I have never met anybody who if lucky enough to practise with Master Huang, had any doubt of his capabilities. Some did argue that his 20 years of practising Fujian White Crane under some of the most famous masters of his time was a major factor in his later success at Taiji, and he never denied it, but while giving due credit to the three Daoist Sages who taught him White Crane from the age of 14, he always attributed his Taiji skill to the late Grand Master Cheng Man-Ching.

Zhou Xuan Yun On Feb. 1, 2013, the Library of Congress of the United States hosted an event to receive Wudang San Feng Pai. This event included a speech by Taoist (Daoist) priest and Wudang San Feng Pai Master Zhou Xuan Yun and the presentation of important Wudang historical documents and artifacts for a permanent display at the Library. Wudang Wellness Re-established in recent decades, Wudang San Feng Pai is an organization in China, which researches, preserves, teaches and promotes Wudang Kung Fu, which was said originally created by the 13th century Taoist Monk Zhang San Feng. Some believe that Zhang San Feng created Tai Chi (Taiji) Chuan (boxing) by observing the fight between a crane and a snake. Zhang was a hermit and lived in the Wudang Mountains to develop his profound philosophy on Taoism (Daoism), internal martial arts and internal alchemy. The Wudang Mountains are the mecca of Taoism and its temples are protected as one of 730 registered World Heritage sites of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). Wudang Kung Fu encompasses a wide range of bare-hand forms of Tai Chi, Xingyi and Bagua as well as weapon forms for health and self-defense purposes. Traditionally, it was taught to Taoist priests only. It was prohibited to practice during the Chinese Cultural Revolution (1966- 1976).

  • Research on MMA Technology System of Taichi Push Hand
2019 International Conference on Cultural Studies, Tourism and Social Sciences (CSTSS 2019) Research on MMA Technology System of Taichi Push Hand Weiqi Li Jiangxi Normal University School of Physical Education, Nanchang, Jiangxi Province, China Keywords: Taijiquan; Skills; UFC; MMA Abstract: Chinese Wushu has a long history, extensive and profound. After several generations of unremitting efforts, Chinese Wushu has gained a very high reputation in the world. Among them, Taijiquan has an unparalleled influence, according to a survey released in 2007 by the National Center for Supplementary and Alternative Medicine, affiliated to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). According to the report, about 3 million people in the United States engage in Taijiquan, while in 2015 the number of Taijiquan practitioners worldwide reached 300 million. It can be said that Taijiquan is a business card of traditional Wushu. However, in recent years, several confrontations between Taijiquan and modern fighting have all ended in failure, which makes people think that the concept of Taijiquan has lagged behind the times. Therefore, we need a platform to rebuild people's confidence in Taijiquan boxing, and also to avoid the development of Taijiquan blindly emphasizing traditional culture and health preservation. After fighting, we should know that the soul of Wushu is fighting. Once Taijiquan leaves fighting, it is a water without source and a wood without foundation. Comprehensive Combat (MMA) is the hottest type of combat at present. It follows the idea of Western pragmatism and the rule of open and inclusive, and its skill is undoubtedly high. If Taijiquan can participate in it, it can prove its fighting ability through the stage of comprehensive fighting first.

  • About Wushu: Taolu Taolu Refers to the Set Routine
About Wushu: Taolu Taolu refers to the set routine (form) practice component of wushu. Taolu routines comprise of a continuously connected set of pre-determined techniques, choreographed according to certain principles and philosophies which incorporate techniques and stylistic principles of attack and defense. These include hand techniques, leg techniques, jumps, sweeps, stances & footwork, seizing, throwing & wrestling, balances etc. Traditionally, Taolu routines were originally compiled to preserve the techniques and tactics of a particular lineage or system, and would gradually improve a practitioner's flexibility, stamina, strength, speed, balance and co-ordination, and would "imprint" a tactical order into practitioners. Taolu routines include individual routines and group routines, as well as partner/duel routines with 2 or more practitioners involved. They have a rich and diverse content utilizing a wide variety of techniques and include both bare-handed routines and those performed with weapons. Sport wushu has developed from traditional wushu and is presented to the world in the form of a modern Olympic sport with a perfect combination of ancient practices and modern sports principles. Athletes perform routines (barehanded or with weaponry) based on specific rules, highlighting their athletic strengths. Routines are appraised by a panel of judges who evaluate different aspects of a performance, namely quality of movements, overall performance and degree of difficulty, and award a score based on an athlete's performance. Individual taolu routines include optional routines, compulsory routines, choreographed duel/sparring routines and group routines. Taolu competition takes place in a specialized 8m x 14m arena, which comprises of high density foam covered by a low-static carpet.
