Masonic– By Unknown Was taught the meanings of the emblems There comes a time in each mans life The compass and the square. When he should look around, As I heard those early lectures Might search out new knowledge I was soon to understand, Might travel some new ground. That man's not judged by worldly wealth I too, did need direction When he holds a brothers hand. To balance out my life, When I memorized to prove myself To give me some new interests I thought 'twould never end, Way from daily toil and strife. What I did not know in masonry I had heard about Masonic Would be most trusted friends. Who helped children when in need, Have now given most the ritual I also heard no one was barred And heard it o'er and o'er, Cause of colour or of creed. Each time I hear the work well done I signed an application I learn a little more. And some time would pass before, There is a valued teaching in that book I was told I had passed the ballot When e'er each page I scan, And was admitted to the door. 'Tis a guide for me to live by As I followed in the footsteps To be better man. Where so many men have trod, I am strong on visitation I was asked in whom I put in trust I hope it never ends, I said it was in god It is here we aim for better work As I knelt before the altar And we meet a host of friends. And the lights I first did see, Yes I've been a mason many years I did not fully realize And have passed three score and ten, What that light would mean to me. I have found a challenge in the work Had repeated obligation And would like to do it all again. 2 Saw the open bible there, Sentinel Page 3

Premiering at 7pm on the Valley’s YouTube Channel Tuesday May 25th, 2021 The Art of Memory is an ancient technique dating back at least to Classical Greece. It has been associated with learning, craftsmanship, and even mystical revelation. There is some evidence that the Art of Memory was one of the key components in the development of Freemasonry during the Early Modern period. In this interview, Erik L. Arneson will explore memory through antiquity, its connection with pansophia and image magic in the Renaissance, its connection with Freemasonry, and its conflict with the written word and the rise of literacy. W.Bro. Erik L. Arneson, 32°, MPS, was raised in Ashland Lodge № 23 AF&AM of Oregon in 2000. He is a Past Master of both his mother lodge and of Esoterika Lodge № 227 AF&AM of Oregon. He has served as Grand Orator of the Grand Chapter of Royal Arch Masons of Oregon and is a founding member and Secretary of the Lewis & Clark Chapter of the Philalethes Society in Portland, Oregon. He currently serves as Organist of The Research Lodge of Oregon № 198 AF&AM of Oregon, though he is not yet a member of that lodge and has only played an organ twice. 7 Portland Masons in History Bro. Simon Benson and the story of the “Benson Bubblers” Brother Simon Benson, prominent civic leader, Portland philanthropist, and Oregon Freemason was born Simen Bergersen Klaeve on September 9th, 1851 on a small farm near Lillibraner in the Valley of Gausdal in Norway as the fourth of seven children. When he was 10 his eldest brother and sister moved to the and eventually settled in Wisconsin. By the time Simon was 16 his older brother had accumulated enough money to send for the rest of the family and they immigrated to the United States and young Simon found himself in a new land with a language he did not speak.

Simon Benson and One of His Drinking Fountains Bro. Benson’s family first lived in New York City but later Credit: Oregon Historical Society Archives moved to Wisconsin to join the eldest son and daughter. He got a job working as a farm hand in Black River Falls – the farmer told him he would raise his pay $2 a month if he would learn to speak English; he qualified to earn the pay raise by the end of three months and was then making $20 monthly. During this time, they changed the family surname to “Benson” in the process to become US citizens because it was easier to pronounce.

From 1868 to 1875, Bro. Benson worked the timber and logging trade in logging camps and sawmills. At 24 he married Ester Searles and opened a general store in Lynxville and ran that successfully for several years until the business was destroyed by fire.

At 27 years old, married and with a son Amos and with his business ruined he was penniless, so he packed up his family and moved to Portland Oregon having heard about the abundance of jobs in the timber industry. By 1880 his experience in the industry paid off in the Pacific Northwest and he found work near St. Helens. Later that year he bought 160 acres of land and started his own timber business. Simon had two more children, Alice and Caroline, with his first wife Ester. Unfortunately, Bro. Benson was forced to sell that business and move his family to Colfax, Washington when his wife Ester fell ill in 1883. She sadly passed on following a long fight with tuberculosis in 1890. Later that year Simon returned to Oregon and started a new logging operation. He also met and married Pamelia Loomis, his second wife, with whom he fathered two more children; Gilbert, and Chester.

In 1901, Simon began to mechanize his logging operation and was able to build railroads into the forests to carry logs to the Columbia River where they could be floated and shipped to various mills. He was the first lumberman in the Pacific Northwest to use steam power to transport felled trees and reduce the cost of operations.

It is unknown to the author at this time when or where Bro. Benson joined Freemasonry, however according to the 1900 Proceedings of the Annual Communication of the Grand Lodge of A.F. & A.M. of Oregon, Bro. Benson affiliated as a Master Mason with Harmony Lodge No. 12 A.F. & A.M. of Oregon in Portland during that year. It is also likely that timbers used in the 1902 construction of the Scottish Rite Temple of Portland were purchased from Bro. Benson’s lumber yards.

For the Portland Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition in 1905, Simon donated the Forestry Building, which at that time was the world’s largest log cabin building. In 1906 Simon successfully developed a type of cigar-shaped ocean-going log raft and used these rafts to transport his lumber to , 8 expanding his market access and business. The largest of these rafts were 1,000 feet long and could transport 6 million board feet of lumber. In 1910 Simon sold his timber holdings for five million dollars and retired from the lumber business.

In 1912 he began building an extension to the Oregon Hotel in Downtown Portland at 3rd and Broadway to draw in tourism and commerce to the City. Inside the new hotel, Simon Benson spared no expense in his pursuit of elegance. During the construction of the Hotel, Bro. Benson donated $10,000 for 20 bronze drinking fountains for the City of Portland. Two reasons have been speculated as the motivation for the donation of the fountains; the first it is said, he felt the need to provide them after seeing a little girl crying at an Independence Day Parade due to her not being able to find a drink of water; the Forestry Building, Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition other likely reason was the workers on the construction of the Credit: Wikipedia, Albert Henry Barnes Collection Hotel claimed the only place they could get a “drink of water” was in the saloons and taverns of Portland and somehow they would then return to work inebriated after breaks. The fountains might have been donated in the hopes it would reduce consumption and improve productivity of the workers. There are today 52 “true” fountains dubbed “Benson Bubblers”; combined the fountains provide 100,000 gallons of drinking water to downtown every day, except in cold weather. The first year the hotel operated poorly so in 1914 Bro. Benson took over management and the Hotel soon became known as the , as it is still called today.

In 1915 Bro. Benson donated $100,000 in funds to build a Polytechnic School, also known as Benson Polytechnic High School, where students are provided specific emphasis in technical fields of education. That same year Bro. Benson was chosen to represent Oregon at the Panama-Pacific International Exposition in San Francisco as the state's "First Citizen." He later said his various philanthropic donations held an important purpose: to reduce alcohol drinking with the fountains and promote learning a skilled trade at the High School.

In 1917, because of his strenuous efforts Bro. Benson was named the first chairman of the reconstituted Oregon State Highway Commission. Simon undertook an enthusiastic effort to support development of the roads and infrastructure of Oregon and was an avid supporter of the construction of the Columbia River Highway, the first planned scenic roadway in the Unites States. When Hood River County voted for a $75,000 bond to construct their portion of the highway from Multnomah County to Hood River, Bro. Benson purchased the entire bond a month later because they were not selling. Then, to prevent commercial development encroaching on the natural beauty of the scenery, Bro. Benson purchased 400 acres of land along the and later deeded it to the City of Portland for a public park when he moved to California in 1921. The land was divided up to become the Wahkeena Falls Recreation Area, Benson State Park, and the Multnomah Falls Recreation Area. Simon also paid for the construction of a masonry footbridge across the upper falls and a concrete arch bridge over the lower falls.

Bro. Benson built a mansion in Beverly Hills to live out his retirement and passed to the Celestial Lodge on August 5th, 1942 in California at the age of 91, his earthly remains were returned to Oregon and interred in Portland’s River View Cemetery. In 1999 the Simon Benson award was created to honor the Pacific Northwest’s pioneers of philanthropy. Bro. Simon Benson is well remembered in Portland and was once quoted as saying: "No one has the right to die and not leave something to the 9 public and for the public good."-By Nathan Neff, Master of Research Lodge No. 198 A.F.&A.M. of Oregon 119th Anniversary of the Cornerstone Dedication of the Portland Scottish Rite At one-thirty o’clock pm on Thursday, June 12th, 1902, on the second day of the 52nd Annual Communication of the Most Worshipful Grand Lodge of Ancient Free and Accepted Masons of Oregon, Most Worshipful Brother William E. Grace called the Grand Lodge from labor to refreshment, a Lodge of Entered Apprentices was opened in Ample form with the Grand Officers in position and procession was made, with the accompaniment of Oregon Knights Templar Commandery No. 1 and all totaled about 500 Masons to the northeast corner of an open field at the intersection of Morrison and Lownsdale street (now 15th Avenue).

There they dispensed with ceremonies to dedicate the Cornerstone of a soon-to-be stately Masonic edifice to be erected on the site and serve as the future home and first of its kind Cathedral style model of Scottish Rite Masonic buildings.

At the occasion, Ill. Brother William Fenton, 33º (then K.C.C.H.), provided the From the Morning Oregonian, oration, its entirety is available in the Proceedings of the Grand Communication June 13th,1902, Page 10 from 1902, provided here are some excerpts: “This is an epoch in ceremonial Masonry. It is also a day of reflection, re-examination of fundamental truths and consecration to new ideals. In the brief moment devoted to this service a mere outline of our thoughts can be expressed. This corner-stone is to perform a double purpose and to mark alike the foundation of a great temple builded of brick, mortar and the handiwork of man, and also an unseen house not made with hands, erected in the hearts and consciences of men, swift in purpose and sure of endeavor… The Masonic lodge is a changing and mortal constituency. Its membership comes and passes out and into the Eternal. Its officers serve their terms and succeed each other, and each year, decade and cycle new men pass over the threshold and enter from the outer door. The temple of yesterday, last decade and of a former generation endures. This corner-stone looks young and new today, fresh from the hand of its craftsman—but it was made in the crucible of the world and will endure until the day ’in which the heavens shall pass away with great noise and the elements shall melt with fervent heat.’… This cathedral, builded by the hand of man, fashioned and adorned by the genius of his brain, will stand as a mute sentinel guarding the fame and glory of our noble order… Individuals, communities, states and nations pass away—their good deeds alone survive the defacing finger of Time. This cathedral shall outlive all that are now present, and into its open doors shall go the unnumbered brethren who follow us. It shall live as a memorial, a witness testifying of our sacrifice, our love and consecration.”

This June 12th, 2021, marks the 119th anniversary of the laying of our Temple’s Cornerstone by the Grand Lodge of Oregon; although we are unable to unite at this time for this recurrence it is hoped the Members of the Portland Valley will still celebrate its steadfast endurance and soon again resume labor in our historic temple. If you are so inclined please consider donating to the Temple Preservation Foundation. All funds donated to the Portland Scottish Rite Temple Preservation Foundation go to support the Foundation's stated mission: "To solicit and expend funds to protect, preserve, maintain, and restore the cultural and structural integrity of the Scottish Rite Masonic Temple in Portland, Oregon." The funds donated to the Portland Scottish Rite Temple Preservation Foundation are not used for the day-to-day operations of the facility or fraternity. 10 Meetings, Degree, & Reunion update

May 3, 2021—Portland, Oregon

Greetings Brethren, I had hoped by now we would have been able to resume Stated Meetings but due to the ongoing situation downtown and health and safety concerns, not to mention the prudent Edict from M.W. Brother Mike McGuyer discouraging in-person Degree work for all Lodges, Appendant, and Concordant Bodies, the Portland Valley is continuing to forgo all in-person meetings for the time being.

The Valley Leadership appreciates both the guidance of the Grand Master and the patience of our Members and Candidates as we continue to negotiate these troublesome waters. Unfortunately as the conditions and occupancy standards in Multnomah County continue to vary widely and fluctuate frequently it prevents the ability to plan for degrees or a Reunion.

It is hoped to resume Stated Meetings soon, although we are in the process of determining if there is a more suitable location to hold them temporarily until conditions in the downtown area are remedied. Notices will be sent in advance of any new developments. We are endeavoring to put together several virtual educational presentations and will be sending out more information as those program come together.

Sincerely & Fraternally, Br. Nate Neff, 32º, KCCH Portland Valley Personal Representative
