NewYork University Bulletin 2012-2013 5 NEW YORK UNIVERSITY GALLATIN SCHOOL OF INDIVIDUALIZED STUDY NewYork University The founding of NewYork University in 1831 by a group of eminent private citizens was a historic event in American education. In the early 19th century, a major emphasis in higher education was on the mastery of Greek and Latin, with little attention given to modern or contemporary subjects.The founders of NewYork University intended to enlarge the scope of higher education to meet the needs of persons aspiring to careers in business, industry,sci- ence, and the arts, as well as in law,medicine, and the ministry.The opening of the University of London in 1828 convinced NewYorkers that NewYork, too, should have a university. The first president of NewYork University’s governing council was Albert Gallatin, former adviser toThomas Jefferson and secretary of the treasury in Jefferson’s cabinet. Gallatin and his cofounders said that the new university was to be a “national university” that would provide a “rational and practical education for all.” The result of the founders’ foresight is today a university that is recognized both nationally and internationally as a leader in scholarship. Of the more than 3,000 colleges and universities in America, only 60 institutions are members of the distinguished Association of American Universities. NewYork University is one of the 60. Students come to the University from all 50 states and from over 130 foreign countries. The University includes 18 schools, colleges, institutes, and programs at major centers in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and Abu Dhabi (UAE). In 2013, NYU in New York and NYU Abu Dhabi will be joined by a third campus in Shanghai, China. In addition, the University oper- ates a branch campus program in Rockland County at St.Thomas Aquinas College. Certain of the University’s research facilities, notably the Nelson Institute of Environmental Medi- cine, are located in Sterling Forest, near Tuxedo, NewYork.Although overall the University is large, the divisions are small- to moderate-sized units—each with its own traditions, pro- grams, and faculty. Enrollment in the undergraduate divisions of the University ranges between 130 and 7,672. While some introductory classes in some programs have large numbers of students, many classes are small. Spanning almost 40 years of Genzken’s inventive, audacious, and deeply influential artwork, the exhibition brings together more than 150 objects in an astonishing variety of techniques, including assemblage, sculpture, painting, photography, collage, drawing, artist’s books, film, and large-scale installations. A majority of the works in the exhibition are on view in the U.S. for the first time, including Schauspieler (Actors) (2013), a large-scale installation, while others have rarely been publicly exhibited anywhere. Isa Genzken: Retrospective is co-organized by The Museum of Modern Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, and the Dallas Museum of Art. The exhibition is organized by Sabine Breitwieser, Chief Curator, Department of Media and Performance Art (until January 31, 2013), and Laura Hoptman, Curator, Department of Painting and Sculpture, MoMA; Michael Darling, the James W. In general, the Potential CPC Modifications would eliminate the temporary gymnasium building, reduce the size of two of the Project Buildings, eliminate the proposed hotel and conference center use in the Zipper Building, change the order of construction on the North Block (so that the LaGuardia Building is built before the Mercer Building), eliminate below-grade development below the mapped rights-of- way of Mercer Street and LaGuardia Place on the North Block, eliminate the proposed rezoning in the Commercial Overlay Area, and make certain related design changes. A description of these Potential CPC Modifications, as well as an analysis of the potential for significant adverse environmental impacts to result from these Potential CPC Modifications, is addressed in Chapter 26, “Potential CPC Modifications under Consideration by the CPC.” This chapter, and the other chapters of this FEIS (with the exception of Chapter 26), describe and analyze the Proposed Actions without the Potential CPC Modifications described above.
