Lia Cirio's Quest To Modernize the Ballet World By Carly Lanning June 8, 2016 Lia Cirio performing in the Boston Ballet's production of "Swan Lake" Photo by Rosalie O'Connor Each week, Lia Cirio can go through over 30 pairs of pointe shoes. She has a full schedule: 9:45 a.m. workouts with the Boston Ballet company, followed by six-hour rehearsals, cross training, performances, and, once she gets home, coursework for her undergraduate degree at Northeastern University. But this year, the 30-year-old principal dancer of the Boston Ballet, who joined the company when she was just 16, is embarking on her greatest challenge yet: Running her own dance collective away from the politics of the traditional ballet world and helping to modernize the artform. "We founded [this group] to provide a place where all types of artists could feel safe to create and collaborate without boundaries of a feeling of self-consciousness," Cirio told NBC News. "We do not want to be bound by the politics that come that often come about in the ballet world, but instead make space for creation." "AUDIENCES NOW, THEY ARE NOT COMING TO SEE A PURE WHITE BALLERINA, THEY CAN IMAGINE AN ASIAN PERSON BEING A SWAN OR A BLACK PERSON BEING A GISELLE." Cirio fell in love with ballet when she was just three years old. Her parents had taken her to see "The Nutcracker" outside of Philadelphia and, in what she calls "a cliché ballet moment," Cirio instantly fell in love with the character of Clara. -

English National Ballet today announces promotions and new joiners for the 2018/2019 season Tamara Rojo CBE, Artistic Director of English National Ballet, has today announced promotions within the Company and new joiners for the 2018/2019 season. Promotions The following promotions have been made within the Company. James Streeter is promoted to First Soloist Rina Kanehara is promoted to Soloist Henry Dowden, Sarah Kundi, and Jia Zhang are promoted to First Artist Fernando Carratalá Coloma is promoted to 4th Year Artist of the Company Joiners Following his recent guest performances with the Company in Song of the Earth, La Sylphide, Romeo & Juliet, Nutcracker and Akram Khan’s Giselle, Jeffrey Cirio, currently Principal at American Ballet Theatre, joins English National Ballet as Lead Principal. From The National Ballet of Canada, Francesco Gabriele Frola and Emma Hawes join the Company as Principal and First Soloist respectively, while remaining as members of The National Ballet of Canada. English National Ballet welcomes three Prix de Lausanne prize winners as Artists of the Company this year, Shale Wagman joins from Princess Grace Academy, Miguel Angel Maidana joins from Brussels International Ballet School, and Carolyne Galval joins from Itego in Artes Basileu Franca. Joining as Artists of the Company from English National Ballet School are Breanna Foad, Josue Moreno Lagarda, Rentaro Nakaaki, and Maria Del Mar Bonet Sans. Also joining as Artists of the Company are Rebecca Blenkinsopp from the Royal Ballet School, and Ivana Bueno from Academy Princess Grace. Leavers Following her sabbatical last season Laurretta Summerscales leaves English National Ballet, remaining Principal at Bayerisches Staatsballett. -

English National Ballet Song of the Earth & La Sylphide Romeo & Juliet / Akram Khan’s Giselle / Nutcracker National Tour Wednesday 11 October – Saturday 2 December 2017 Performance times and ticket prices vary www.ballet.org.uk Principal casting for English National Ballet’s autumn tour is today announced. Continuing its commitment to taking world-class ballet to audiences across the country, this autumn English National Ballet presents five productions on its national tour. Two works new to English National Ballet’s repertoire, Sir Kenneth MacMillan’s masterwork, Song of the Earth and August Bournonville’s La Sylphide recreated by Frank Andersen and Eva Kloborg, will be performed at the Manchester Palace Theatre (11-14 October) and Milton Keynes Theatre (17-21 October), ahead of its run at the London Coliseum in January. Winner of the South Bank Sky Arts Award for Dance, Akram Khan’s Giselle comes to Liverpool for the first time, with performances at the Liverpool Empire Theatre (25-28 October), and at the Bristol Hippodrome (21-25 November), Rudolf Nureyev’s Romeo & Juliet returns this autumn. Completing the tour is Wayne Eagling’s Nutcracker, which tours to the Mayflower Theatre Southampton (29 November-2 December) ahead of its run at the Coliseum this winter. Jurgita Dronina Makes Company Debut as Juliet in Romeo and Juliet Principal Casting Announced February 25, 2020… Karen Kain, Artistic Director of The National Ballet of Canada, today announced the principal casting for Romeo and Juliet by acclaimed choreographer Alexei Ratmansky. Principal Dancer Jurgita Dronina will make her company debut in the title role of Juliet this season. Romeo and Juliet is onstage March 11 – 22, 2020 at the Four Seasons Centre for the Performing Arts and concludes the Winter Season. #RomeoandJulietNBC Following a triumphant debut with New York City Ballet in Swan Lake earlier this month, Principal Dancer Guillaume Côté will reprise the role of Romeo opposite Principal Dancer Elena Lobsanova as Juliet. The pair will perform on opening night in the roles that were created on them in 2011. Mr. Côté will also partner Ms. Dronina. Subsequent performances will feature Principal Dancers Naoya Ebe, Harrison James and Brendan Saye as Romeo and Principal Dancers Svetlana Lunkina, Heather Ogden and Sonia Rodriguez and First Soloist Chelsy Meiss as Juliet. Also making debuts this season are First Soloist Donald Thom as Mercutio and Principal Dancer Piotr Stanczyk as Tybalt. Mr. Thom and Second Soloist Christopher Gerty make their debuts as Paris. Debuting in the role of Benvolio are Principal Dancer Skylar Campbell and Second Soloists Spencer Hack and Siphesihle November. Commissioned by Ms. Kain to celebrate the company’s 60th anniversary, Mr. Ratmansky’s version has been hailed a “Romeo and Juliet for our time” (Los Angeles Register) and “rich in dramatic and choreographic insights" (The Guardian). Set to Sergei Prokofiev’s glorious score, Romeo and Juliet features costumes and sets by Richard Hudson and lighting by Jennifer Tipton. -

English National Ballet to release Swan Lake online ondemand.ballet.org.uk English National Ballet is bringing Derek Deane’s mesmerising Swan Lake to online audiences via its recently launched streaming service, Ballet on Demand. A recording of the iconic ballet will be available to rent for £7.99 from 10am on Monday 01 February 2021. Derek Deane’s version of Swan Lake has delighted audiences worldwide for over two decades. The production captures all the magic of the classic ballet, from the ballerinas in white tutus moving in unison, to the captivating romance between Prince Siegfried and the Swan Queen Odette. Recorded at the Liverpool Empire in 2018, this performance sees Isaac Hernández dancing the role of Prince Siegfried with Jurgita Dronina as Odette/Odile and features Tchaikovsky’s score performed live by English National Ballet Philharmonic. Ballet on Demand is part of ENB at Home, English National Ballet’s dedicated video-on-demand platform which gives audiences access to a wide range of ballet content from the stage and beyond, from the comfort of their homes. Launched in November 2020, the platform also features BalletActive, a library of online ballet-based training and classes from the professionals at English National Ballet, available by subscription. -

DESCRIPTION: This style was developed by choreographer George Balanchine, a graduate of Vaganova Ballet Academy. After immigrating from Russia to New York City, Balanchine founded The School of American Ballet, where he developed his specific style of ballet and later began the professional company, The New York City Ballet. Also considered neoclassical ballet, this style is thought to mirror the vibrant and sporty American style in contrast to the more noble and tranquil Russian and European ballet style counterparts. Balanchine is celebrated worldwide as the “father of American ballet”and choreographed 465 ballets in his lifetime. DISTINCT STYLE FEATURES: - While Balanchine’s style took initial inspiration from the traditional Russian method, he rejected classical stiffness for jazzy, athletic movements. - The characteristics of this style include: extreme speed, an athletic quality, a deep plié, an emphasis on line, en dehors pirouettes taken from a lunge in fourth position with a straight back left.
