INTRODUCTION The evolution of doctrine due to continued hybridization has pro- duced a myriad of theological persuasions. The only way to purify our- selves from the possible defects of such “theological genetics” is, first, to recognize that we have them and then, as much as possible, to set them aside and disassociate ourselves from the systems which have come to dominate our thinking. In other words, we should simply strive for truth and an objective understanding of biblical teaching. This series of articles is intended to do just that. We will carefully consider the truth claims of both Calvinists and Arminians and arrive at some conclusions that may not suit either.1 Our purpose here is not to defend a system, but to understand the truth. The conflicting “isms” in this study (Calvinism and Arminianism) are often considered “sacred cows” and, as a result, seem to be solidified and in need of defense. They have become impediments in the search for truth and “barriers to learn- ing.” Perhaps the emphatic dogmatism and defense of the paradoxical views of Calvinism and Arminianism have impeded the theological search for truth much more than we realize. Bauman reflects, I doubt that theology, as God sees it, entails unresolvable paradox. That is another way of saying that any theology that sees it [paradox] or includes it is mistaken. If God does not see theological endeavor as innately or irremediably paradoxical, 1 For this reason the author declines to be called a Calvinist, a moderate Calvinist, an Arminian, an Augustinian, a Thomist, a Pelagian, or a Semi- Pelagian. -

He has been a fellow at the Institute for Advanced Studies in Humanities at Edinburgh (2004), Het Scheepvaartmuseum in Amsterdam (2016–2017) and the Netherlands Institute for Advanced Study (2016). Review by ERNEST B. GILMAN, NEW YORK UNIVERSITY. The indefatigable Dutch polymath whose letters are here col- lected was a jack of all scholarly trades and the master of them all. Medievalists are aware of Junius’s pioneering contributions to the study of Anglo-Saxon and Germanic philology. He was an expert in the comparative study of Old Norse, Old High German, Old Frisian, and Gothic as well as Old English. The codex in the Bodleian containing the Old English texts of Genesis A and B, Exodus, Daniel and “Christ and Satan,” still bears his name as “The Junius Manuscript.” For Renaissance art historians, The Paint- ing of the Ancients (published in Junius’s own Latin, English and Dutch versions over the period 1637-1641) represents the first comprehensive account of the visual arts in antiquity, and a cen- tral document in the history of ut pictura poesis. It stood as the standard work on the subject until the age of Winckelmann. This book was commissioned by Thomas Howard, 14th Earl of Arundel, in whose household Junius served as tutor and librarian for twenty years before the civil war. It was in this office that Junius supplied the scholarly expertise, and perhaps also his share of the enthusi- asm, behind the transnational antiquarian ventures of the “Collec- tor Earl.” Among the projects that occupied a long life devoted to scholarship was a posthumously published Catalogus, arranged al- phabetically, of all the references to objects of art (painting, sculp- ture, architecture, pottery and much else) that Junius could delve out of the archive of classical literature. -

During the period the Lutheran, Reformed, and Anglican churches were the official churches in Protestant countries and religious polemics between Catholicism and Protestantism formed an integral part of the intense political strife that gave birth to modern Europe. Reformed orthodoxy is usually divided into three periods that represent three different stages; there is no watershed between these periods and it is difficult to “ ” determine exact dates. During the period of early orthodoxy the confessional and doctrinal codifications of Reformed theology took place. This period is characterized by polemics against the Counter-Reformation; it starts with the death of the second- generation Reformers (around 1565) and ends in the first decades of the seventeenth century.1 The international Reformed Synod of Dort (1618-1619) is a useful milestone, 2 “ because this synod codified Reformed soteriology. -

ACCOUNTING FOR GOVERNMENT Jacob Soll Accounting for Government: Holland and the Rise of Political Economy in Seventeenth-Century Europe The Dutch may ascribe their present grandeur to the virtue and frugality of their ancestors as they please, but what made that contemptible spot of the earth so considerable among the powers of Europe has been their political wisdom in postponing everything to merchandise and navigation [and] the unlimited liberty of conscience enjoyed among them. —Bernard de Mandeville, The Fable of the Bees (1714) In the Instructions for the Dauphin (1665), Louis XIV set out a train- ing course for his son. Whereas humanists and great ministers had cited the ancients, Louis cited none. Ever focused on the royal moi, he described how he overcame the troubles of the civil war of the Fronde, noble power, and ªscal problems. This was a modern handbook for a new kind of politics. Notably, Louis exhorted his son never to trust a prime minister, except in questions of ªnance, for which kings needed experts. Sounding like a Dutch stadtholder, Louis explained, “I took the precaution of assigning Colbert . with the title of Intendant, a man in whom I had the highest conªdence, because I knew that he was very dedicated, intelli- gent, and honest; and I have entrusted him then with keeping the register of funds that I have described to you.”1 Jean-Baptiste-Colbert (1619–1683), who had a merchant background, wrote the sections of the Instructions that pertained to ªnance. This dissertation argues that this massacre remains such an unique event in Dutch history, that it needs thorough investigation. Historians have focused on short-term political causes for the eruption of violence on the brothers’ fatal day. This work contributes to the existing historiography by uncovering more long-term political and social undercurrents in Dutch society. In doing so, issues that may have been overlooked previously are taken into consideration as well. -
The Nature of Atonement in the Theology of Jacobus Arminius
JETS 53/4 (December 2010) 773–85 THE NATURE OF ATONEMENT IN THE THEOLOGY OF JACOBUS ARMINIUS j. matthew pinson* Jacobus Arminius is one of the best known and least studied theologians in the history of Christianity. His writings have been neglected by Calvinists and Arminians alike. Calvinists have disliked him because of his opposition to scholastic predestinarian theology. Most Arminians have neglected him because what little they have read of him reminds them more of Calvinism than they like. Arminius scholar Carl Bangs is correct when he says that most modern treatments of Arminius assume a definition of Arminianism that does not come from Arminius. Bangs states that most interpreters of Arminianism begin with a preconception of what Arminius should be expected to say, then look in his published works, and do not find exactly what they are looking for. They show impatience and disappointment with his Calvinism, and shift the inquiry into some later period when Arminianism turns out to be what they are looking for—a non-Calvinistic, synergistic, and perhaps semi-Pelagian system.1 This is the approach many scholars have taken toward Arminius regard- ing his doctrine of atonement. For example, the Calvinist scholar Robert L. Reymond has said that the Arminian theory of atonement is the governmental theory, which “denies that Christ’s death was intended to pay the penalty for sin.” He claims that the governmental theory’s “germinal teachings are in Arminius.”2 Similarly, well-known Wesleyan-Arminian scholar James K. Writings about art produced by the seventeenth-century descendants of these provincial peoples were proud but defensive as they continued to treat Rome as the centre of civilization. In 1632 Constantijn Huygens, secretary to northern Netherlands stadtholder Prince Frederik Henry, confided to his diary that he wished the promising artists Rembrandt van Rijn and Jan Lievens had travelled to Italy to learn from the art of antiquity and the Renaissance masters who had absorbed its lessons. But, he noted, the two young men felt that there were plenty of Italian works to be seen conveniently enough in The Netherlands. He then lavished praise on a figure of Judas by Rembrandt that he felt powerfully expressed the kind of universal truths promulgated by Latin art. Indeed, he wrote, ‘[... ] all honor to you, Rembrandt! To have brought Ilium – even all of Asia Minor – to Italy was a lesser feat than for a Dutchman [...] to have captured for The Netherlands the trophy of artistic excellence from Greece and Italy.’1 Through the first three quarters of the twentieth century this ambivalent stance toward the art of northern Europe has run like a red thread through art history as it developed as a professional discipline identified with, and defined by, the Italian Renaissance’s revival of antiquity. -

And should we assume that the newer the translation the better? The book under review should give considerable help to those who are asking these and similar questions. In his Preface, Mr Macgregor gives his own experience: “As a young Christian I went to a church that used the Authorised Version (AV). However, on moving with my wife and family to a different area, we went to a church that used the Good News Bible (GNB) and the New International Version (NIV). This enticed me away from the AV for a while. At first these new versions appeared to be easier to read and understand. However, soon I began to notice serious discrepancies (that is, Old Testament references to Christ veiled or missing) in the GNB. This troubled me greatly. I stopped using it, but continued with the NIV, which seemed more reliable. However, as I studied it and compared it with the AV I had first used, I began to feel concerned. The NIV had verses missing, and later I found it had many words missing. Its rendering of some parts gave a completely different meaning. The more I read and compared, the more concerned I became. Also, like the GNB, the NIV was more difficult to commit to memory. I bought a Revised Authorised Version (called in the USA, and now here, the New King James Version (NKJV)). -

The primary research question is defined as: “To what extent do the dialogues under analysis relate to Arminian soteriology?” By seeking an answer to this question, new knowledge is sought on the current soteriological position of the Methodist-Lutheran dialogues, the contemporary Methodist theology and the commonalities between the Lutheran and Arminian understanding of soteriology. This way the soteriological picture of the Methodist-Lutheran discussions is clarified. The dialogues under analysis were selected on the basis of versatility. Firstly, the sole world organisation level dialogue was chosen: The Church – Community of Grace. Additionally, the document World Methodist Council and the Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification is analysed as a supporting document. Secondly, a document concerning the discussions between two main-line churches in the United States of America was selected: Confessing Our Faith Together. -
