Regional Business News

A brief round-up of all the most important stories of regional business information for the North West and North Wales

HAULIER Abbey Logistics - The company, which employs 250 people from its Bootle base, recently rebranded from Abbey Road Tanks to Abbey Logistics Group to better reflect the range of services on offer and has set out a green agenda with all vehicles bearing the slogan “on the road to a greener future”. Although it is not recruiting drivers at the moment, the company does hold on file completed application forms, and will contact applicants as and when vacancies arise. Offices in the North West include Bootle, Chester and Manchester. You will find the online LGV application form here: http://www.abbeyroadtanks.com/go/vacancies/hgv-drivers/hgv-application-form

New investment and jobs are in the pipeline at logistics group Stobart’s Widnes multi-modal gateway. The Warrington-based group is working with an unnamed third party to create rail sidings for a new development at the road, rail and sea hub which could be ready by October 2012. Stobart has already developed a distribution operation for Tesco which now receives six freight trains a day. Commenting on the new investment deputy chief executive and company secretary Richard Butcher said: “We are working with them on new sidings and it could be ready by October 2012. “The third party would bring a significant investment and create quite a number of jobs which would be great for the North West and Widnes.” Stobart is also currently planning the development of phases two and three of the Widnes distribution site.

The Communication Workers Union (CWU) and Riverside MP Louise Ellman are campaigning to save 435 jobs at the Virgin Media site on Liverpool’s Albert Dock. The telecoms company announced plans last month to shut the site by April 2012 and switch work to Swansea which has room for expansion. The group said no jobs would be lost due to relocation opportunities for its own 25 staff and agency workers with Adecco and IBM. However, the CWU has submitted proposals to Virgin for alternative, less expensive sites which it says would safeguard the jobs for Merseyside.

Supermarket chain Waitrose has said it plans to open at least 10 new shops in the North West in the next five years, creating 1,500 jobs.

The retailer said it aimed to spend £100m on new sites in the region, including a £35m distribution centre in Chorley, Lancashire, to open in 2012.

The company currently has eight stores in the North West, including one which opened in Chester last month.

The Government has announced 34 North West projects were successful in the second round of bids for RGF funding.

Siemens' bid for cash for its new green technology centre in Manchester, Salford City Council's bid for the Port Salford project (left) and Burnley Borough Council's bid for the Todmorden Curve project are just three of the projects which have gained approval as the government awarded £227m worth of funding for regional projects.

The government has said that funding for projects in the North West will create 7,800 jobs directly and lead to another 39,500 being generated in the supply chain.

A leading bank economist yesterday predicted that Merseyside’s economy could struggle more than other parts of Britain as the country continues to suffer a protracted period of slow economic growth. Royal Bank of Scotland head of communications and chief economist Andrew McLaughlin said: “We lost about 2% of national income in the recession of 1992. It took us two years to get it back to pre- recession levels and then the economy grew 10% in five years. “This time round we lost 6% of national income and the recovery is much slower. It’s going to take us six years to get back to where we were. It’s going to be a protracted recovery. Mr McLaughlin said Merseyside was challenged because it already has high unemployment. He added: “For Merseyside it will be a tough shift. It may not be as bad as the 1970s, but it’s still going to be difficult because Merseyside does not punch its weight in manufacturing or in financial services. But the area it does punch its weight is public sector employment. “The big issue is does it have the autonomous capacity to offset public sector spending cuts?”

Telephone answering service opened a new base, creating 100 jobs. Moneypenny unveiled the 8,000sq feet office, adjacent to its existing headquarters on Wrexham Technology Park. The building will enhance Moneypenny’s existing workspace and provide state of the art facilities for an additional 100 workers

A Ferry company employing more than 1,000 people on Anglesey will draw-up a masterplan to create more jobs and reinvent the island’s port. Stenna Line is big employer in Holyhead - there are around 1,000 indirect jobs, including 400-500 on their ships and 200 at the port.

The Mere Golf Resort & Spa in Cheshire has announced a recruitment drive which will see the creation of 100 jobs across the business, starting in January next year.

In March 2012, following a period of redevelopment, The Mere will open as a luxury resort, offering “world class” event facilities, golf course and spa along with a hotel comprising 81 rooms, including suites and three restaurants.

A variety of roles including head concierge, night manager and room’s division manager are currently being recruited for as several new departments will be put in place ahead of the hotel launch.

There will also be a number of positions across food and beverage to support the resort’s new restaurants
