Only one entry per exhibitor per breed. Sheep will be judged unshorn, and should be in a state demanded by their flock book. CATTLE All Cattle Classes depend on the number of exhibits. Bull ages are calculated from the show Date. Dexter Judge: Adrian Park All males up to the age of 12 months on show date may be shown on their birth notification number. All males over 12 months on show date must be shown on their pedigree registration 'M' number. The Supreme Champion will be eligible for the Dexter Society Silver Spoon. Young Handlers are to handle one animal entered (or eligible for entry) in one of the above showing classes. Judging will be the manner and ability to handle and show Sheep, Pigs, Cattle and Goats and not on the conformation etc. of the animal. Best Young Handler Cattle & Sheep trophies to be awarded to the first prize winners The Best Goat Young Handler trophy for classes 110 and 111 will be judged in the Goat ring following the Goat classes.

    HERD FEATURE THE STONELEIGH HERD The Stoneleigh Herd of Sussex cattle was founded in 2002, a year after Debbie Dann and Alan Hunt had bought the RASE’s herd of rare breed White Park Cattle. White Parks, for all their good looks and photogenic charm, are not the most commercial of breeds so they wanted a breed to complement the White Parks and that would pay the bills and ensure the cattle weren’t just a glorified hobby. After looking at a number of native breeds the selection was narrowed down to South Devons and Sussex (Debbie is originally from Hersmonceux in East Sussex). Sussex easily trumped the South Devons! The dispersal of Mike Cushing’s Coombe Ash Herd in May 2002 provided the ideal opportunity to buy some foundation cows and four cows with calves at foot and back in calf again found themselves travelling up the M40 to Warwickshire. Coombe Ash Godinton 5th, bought as a calf at foot from the Coombe Ash dispersal sale and her heifer calf summer 2013 Debbie’s day job at that time was to run all the competitive classes for the Royal Show and Alan was and still is the Estate Manager for the Royal Showground’s farmland. Since 2007 Debbie has been Breed Secretary for the Longhorn Cattle Society. This means that both Alan and Debbie have full time jobs and the cattle are mostly managed outside of work hours and have to be pretty low maintenance. Stoneleigh Godinton 2nd and calf Cows are housed over the winter as all the grazing is rented and the cattle are easier to manage when they are indoors when the owners are working full time.

    EBLEX Report: Analysis of “Breed of Dam” for cattle recorded with BCMS 2003-2013 Samuel Boon, EBLEX, May 2014 (Version 1) Introduction The breed makeup of the nation’s suckler cows influences not just the beef produced and sold to consumers, but also the productivity and ultimately profitability of those farming systems in which cattle are born and reared. EBLEX asked the British Cattle Movement Service (BCMS) for a breakdown of the dams of calves recorded on the database on the basis of their breed. BCMS is part of the Rural Payments Agency (RPA) It is recognised that an analysis of this type of farmer derived data has some limitations. Where crossbreeding arises there is a tendency for the most valuable breed to be reported on the passport. This approach would favour the reporting of certain beef breeds – which may only account for 50% of the genetic makeup of the suckler cow. In the reporting of dairy breeds similar bias may arise. However, this is a large dataset and for the most part recording protocols have remained consistent over time so relative change over the last decade is still relevant to those interested in assessing which breeds and crosses are influencing the UK beef supply. Methodology BCMS data relates to passport applications received for live and dead animals born in Great Britain. Imported cattle are excluded from the data. Cows producing twins or calving twice within the year will be counted more than once. BCMS report 239 different breed codes. It is understood that these codes/breed types are determined by Breed Societies.
