It has 31 permanent members including Israel, the United States, and United Kingdom and much of Western Europe, and 11 observer countries (unfortunately South Africa is not one of them).

ne of the organisation’s most important projects is a working Odefinition of antisemitism. In 2015 it adopted this summarised working definition: “Antisemitism is a certain perception of Jews, which may be expressed as hatred toward Jews. Rhetorical and physical manifestations of antisemitism are directed toward Jewish or non-Jewish individuals and/or their property, toward Jewish community institutions and religious facilities”. Critically, this definition also incorporates the present-day version of antisemitism known as anti-Zionism (albeit Ayellet Black, DCM Israeli Embassy; Neta Inbar; HE Lior Keinan, Israeli Ambassador; Maxine Boyd; classic antisemitism still very much exists in its own right). 1. Accusing the Jews as a people, or Israel as a state, of inventing or exaggerating the Holocaust. 2. Accusing Jewish citizens of being more loyal to Israel, or to the alleged priorities of Jews worldwide, than to the interests of their own nations. 3. Denying the Jewish people their right to self-determination, e.g., by claiming that the existence of a State of Israel is a racist endeavour. 4. Applying double standards by requiring of it a behavior not expected or demanded of any other democratic nation. 5. Using the symbols and images associated with classic antisemitism (e.g., claims of Jews killing Jesus or blood libel) to characterize Israel or Israelis. [Working definition of Antisemitism. It is not a place for discussion or dialogue, and it falls squarely within the above definition of antisemitism. A failure to recognise antisemitism cloaked in anti-Zionism, call it out for what it is and fight it, will perpetuate the climate of fear and intimidation that Jewish students feel on campus and their unwillingness to identify openly as Jews or Zionists. This dark cloud should be a clarion call. Since the political climate on campus is often a forewarning of country politics, we ought to take note and compel organisations, NGOs, politicians and government to accept and adopt and act on this working definition of antisemitism, and stand up for ourselves when others fail to do so.

It is surreal to be ending my second year as the Diller Teen Fellows Coordinator.

We shared a very special and life changing year Above: Staff of 2016/2017 together exploring topics around Top right: Cape Town cohort graduation personal Jewish Identity, Israel, Below: Partnership of 2016/2017 Tikkun Olam, leadership and peoplehood. The economy has been kind to the entrepreneurial spirited of our community. But what about the aged; the young who have never had the opportunity of owning their own successful businesses or those who HAVE YOU SEEN OUR E-CARDS? present with physical and or mental challenges. Life has furthermore become more difficult for this sector of our community as a result of rising living costs, food inflation, high medical costs and less employment opportunities. Low interest rates on investments and poor investment performance further increases the burden for those whose life savings are rapidly dwindling. Many of our aged are living off their savings and/ or nominal government old age pensions and hence are not managing to come out every month. Currently the SASSA Old Age pension and government disability grant is R1 600 per month; how is it possible to survive on this amount each month? Semigration from the north has not made life easy for this particular segment of our community in that the influx of people to the Western Cape has forced the prices of rental accommodation to increase as more and more people find it more difficult to purchase their own property. Hence these very members of our community will be forced out of their homes and have to seek cheaper accommodation, moving to more distant outlying areas or resorting to live in temporary accommodation for example backpacker lodges, boarding houses and in desperate situations, night shelters. Many of Jewish Community Services’ clients have no-one to turn to and consider Jewish Community Services as their FOLLOW US ON SOCIAL MEDIA family. It is for this very reason that it is imperative that members of our community who are in a position to assist, do so in order to accommodate and put a roof over the heads of the lesser privileged and vulnerable TWITTER members of our community. As members of the Cape Town Jewish Community it is our responsibility as a Community to look after our fellow Jews. This will thus assist in giving back to these Jewish people their FACEBOOK dignity and pride. Special mention goes out to Willie Gurwitz at AA furnishers for donation of appliances toward our foodbank. We hosted five incredible speakers: Lindiwe Hani, daughter of the murdered Chris Hani, who shared her stories of multiple loss, addiction, bravery, recovery and hope. Debbie Adlington, the lone survivor of a gruesome family murder, who with courage and incredible inner strength turned her life around and had another child. Jacky Jansen, who transformed her life to one of service to her community after being an inmate in . Griselda Grootboom, who started off life on the streets of Cape Town and then found herself being pimped at a brothel in Johannesburg, a survivor of human trafficking who is now an activist for women’s dignity. Balu Nivison, who in 2015 co-founded the iNdoni Dance, Arts and Leadership Academy in Cape Town. She invested in youth empowerment and development of township communities and has won a number of awards for her work. Guests were treated to an outstanding performance by students of the Academy.
