Alternative Press keeps the great reviews coming “Remember in 2008 when Panic! At The Disco let their inner Beatlemaniacs Killer press for Grace Potter and The Nocturnals run wild and free on Pretty. Odd.? That was nothing compared to the Fab-ulous “Is it getting hot in here? Seriously, someone’s spirit of Take A Vacation!, the Young Veins’ infectious debut. Led by two former got to crack a window if we’re going to keep the members of Panic! (Ryan Ross on vocals/guitar and Jon Walker on bass/vocals), new Grace Potter disc on. The Vermont native they get things started with the psychedelic, Beatles-as-filtered-through-the-Mon- and her retooled band punch up their barroom kees ‘Change.’ By the time the title track rolls around next, they’ve moved on to blues with slinky riffs, jazzy noir-like changes and, folk-rock with chiming electric guitars, some old-school organ and the album’s my goodness, sex - how does most contagious vocals. ‘Cape Town’ is ‘Please Please Me’ as Phil Spector would anyone stuff this many coos, have done it. The Veins switch it up throughout the disc - they push an acoustic oohs, moans and screams into guitar to the front of the mix for a moodier spin on folk-rock, and ‘Dangerous 13 songs? In the rare moment Blues’ sounds like British Invaders attempting an r&b ballad. If you’re looking for when Potter isn’t dead sexy, some indication that this was recorded after 1966, good luck with that. So it should come as no -Boston Herald surprise that after the leap into the void that was 2007s lush and eerie Planet Of Ice, Minus the Bear’s fourth album OMNI finds frontman Jake Snider and crew “On their self-titled record, the Vermont-based stirring even more retro-futurism into the mix. With tighter guitar interplay and band opens with a song they could retire on a sparser atmosphere, OMNI drifts in an immaculate vacuum of dark-yet-catchy called “Paris (Ooh La La),” a driving blues stomp 80s prog and new wave, a form of mathy, sultry pop perfectly suited to stargazing that brims with lust. It’s the kind of song Bonnie and/or zero-gravity sex. Although this is the first MTB album produced by some- Raitt always sought as a young coffeehouse singer. one other than former keyboardist Matt Bayles, the synth has never been heavier And that’s just one track. There are other jaw – thanks in part to veteran producer Joe Chiccarelli (the Shins, Manchester droppers, such as the surging “Medicine,” in Orchestra), who adds a shimmering sheen to OMNI’s hot-summer-night-in-outer- which Potter tries on her witchy-woman mojo, space vibe. As Minus the Bear stray further from the prickly, smartass math-rock teasing the listener: “I got the medicine that of their early days, the group seem focused on crafting the perfect album to everybody wants” and “Money,” which has girl- launch them into another dimension entirely - and OMNI, with its brainy intricacy group style locomotion. Top to bottom, this CD and adventurous heart, may just be that spaceship.” Rating: 4 1/2 stars features an eclecticism that projects blues/rock swagger with a hint of funk. Buzzed about at the annual South by Southwest Festival, Potter and company, who perform at Webster Hall on Satur- day, deserve the hype.
