Brand New Book ***** Print on Demand *****.Hawarden Castle is a short essay by G. T. Clark. Colonel George Thomas Clark (26 May 1809 31 January 1898) was a British surgeon and engineer. He was particularly associated with the management of the Dowlais Iron Company. He was also an antiquary and historian of Glamorgan. Clark was born in Chelsea, London, the eldest son of the Revd George Clark (17771848), chaplain to the Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea, and Clara, née Dicey. He was educated at Charterhouse School then articled to a surgeon, Sir Patrick Macgregor, in 1825 and later to George Gisborne Babington. Clark became a member of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1832. Clark opened a practice in Bristol. By the mid- 1830s, Clark was in the employ of Isembard Kingdom Brunel as an engineer on the construction of the Great Western and Ta Vale Railways. His position was a senior one with overall responsibility for some stretches of the line and for civil structures. Involvement in major earth-moving works seems to have fed his interest in geology and archaeology and he, anonymously, authored two guidebooks on the railway, in addition to a critique of Brunel s methods, which was published in Gentleman s Magazine in 1895. From 1843 to 1847, Clark worked on the Great Indian Peninsula Railway, surveying and planning the first passenger line in India, from Bombay to Thana which was opened in 1852. On his return to England, he published a report on the geology of the region. In 1855 Clark took control of Dowlais Ironworks. Clark s wife, was a descendant of Thomas Lewis, one of the original Dowlais Ironworks partners. The family s interests in the...     Cardiff 19th Century Timeline Game education resource This resource aims to: • engage pupils in local history • stimulate class discussion • focus an investigation into changes to people’s daily lives in Cardiff and south east Wales during the nineteenth century. Introduction Playing the Cardiff C19th timeline game will raise pupil awareness of historical figures, buildings, transport and events in the locality. After playing the game, pupils can discuss which of the ‘facts’ they found interesting, and which they would like to explore and research further. This resource contains a series of factsheets with further information to accompany each game board ‘fact’, which also provide information about sources of more detailed information related to the topic. (Your name) ii Abstract The thesis examines the problem of infant mortality in Merthyr Tydfil 1865- 1908. In particular it investigates why Merthyr Tydfil, an iron, steel and coal producing town in south Wales, experienced high infant mortality rates throughout the nineteenth century which rose by the end of the century despite sixty years of public health reforms. The historiography of infant mortality in nineteenth-century Britain includes few Welsh studies although the south Wales Coalfield played an important part in industrial and demographic change in Britain during the second half of the nineteenth century. The thesis argues that conditions of industrial development shaped the social, economic and public health experience in Merthyr, ensnaring its citizens in social disadvantage, reflected in the largely unacknowledged human toll among mothers and babies in that process. The thesis analyses the causes of over 17, 000 infant deaths in Merthyr Tydfil from the primary evidence of an unusually complete series of Medical Officer of Health Reports to identify the principal attributed causes of infant death and explain their social origins and context. Clark, Talygarn, died on Monday night. The eminent archaeologist, who, had he lived till next May would have attained the great age of 89, had lain physically incapacitated for a considerable time, but that he retained to the last the clear and luminous mind which had distinguished him through life was evident in the letter on the subject of the Roman discovery at Cardiff Castle, written only three days previous to his death, which will be found in another column. Mr George Thomas Clark, F.S.A., of Talygarn, Glamorganshire, was born at Chelsea on the 26th May, 1809. He was the eldest son of the Rev. George Clark, M.A., of Trinity College, Cambridge, who was chaplain to the Royal Military Asylum, Chelsea, and Clara, only then surviving daughter of Mr Thomas Dicey, of Claybrook Hall, Leicestershire. The family is a very old one, coming originally from Staffordshire, where its founder, Joseph Clark, of Burton-on-Trent, lived and died. One of Mr G. T. Clark's ancestors, the Rev. Samuel Clark, of Wolston, was chaplain to Robert, Lord Brooke, also vicar of Alcester, perpetual curate of St. Bennett-Fink, London, and for eight years a governor and twice president of Sion College. In 1618 this clergyman was a tryer of elders, &c., under the Parliament, and in 1654 he served as a commissioner for ejecting scandalous ministers, while in 1656, with Walton, Cudworth, and others, he was one of a committee to report upon the translation of the Bible.

    From The Editor. Herewith the eleventh edition of the CSG Newsletter. This year, following discussion with various members it was decided to split the publication into two distinct sections and you will find the 'Bibliography Supplement', by John Kenyon is now separate. In addition to allowing extra space for Newsletter items, it has a practical value in easing the production process and the deadlines. To keep the two publications complementary we shall maintain the same colour covers and wherever possible print thematic drawings and images. To highlight the Aberdeen meeting in April 1997 we reproduce four plates from R W Billings ' The Baronial and Ecclesiastical Antiquities of Scotland' 1845-52, The Newsletter depicts Tolquhon and Craigevar and the Sup­ plement Huntly and Edzell. Elsewhere in the Newsletter we have put together information regarding the accessibility of castle studies materials available through the Internet, or more precisely the World Wide Web. Members who have access to this media should take a look at www.castlewales.com, a site developed by Jeff Thomas and assisted by Lise Hull, both living in the USA. With material supplied by them, we let them talk about the history and raison d'etre of this award winning web site. The Irish - Maynooth- meeting is scheduled for April 16tn-19tn.
