Lysloff Dr. Liz Przybylski Copyright by Dhirendra Mikhail Panikker 2019 The Dissertation of Dhirendra Mikhail Panikker is approved: Committee Chairperson University of California, Riverside Acknowledgments Writing can feel like a solitary pursuit. It is a form of intellectual labor that demands individual willpower and sheer mental grit. But like improvisation, it is also a fundamentally social act. Writing this dissertation has been a collaborative process emerging through countless interactions across musical, academic, and familial circles. This work exceeds my role as individual author. It is the creative product of many voices. First and foremost, I want to thank my advisor, Professor Deborah Wong. I can’t possibly express how much she has done for me. Deborah has helped deepen my critical and ethnographic chops through thoughtful guidance and collaborative study. She models the kind of engaged and political work we all should be doing as scholars. But it all of the unseen moments of selfless labor that defines her commitment as a mentor: countless letters of recommendations, conference paper coachings, last minute grant reminders. Deborah’s voice can be found across every page. I am indebted to the musicians without whom my dissertation would not be possible. Priya Gopal, Vijay Iyer, Amir ElSaffar, and Hafez Modirzadeh gave so much of their time and energy to this project.

There is a depth to the music that is bracing almost beyond words. [4.5 / 5 stars]“ - Mike Chamberlain, Ottawa Express, January 7, 2010, www.ottawaxpress.ca “… A notable exception to this read-before-you-listen approach to avant-garde music is the extraordinary musical legacy of composer/trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith. … Smith has somehow managed to wed an elaborately idiosyncratic aesthetic theory, social philosophy, and system of musical notation to a body of music with the directness, loveliness, and immediate appeal of more traditional forms of music. … On my favorite Smith recordings—Divine Love (ECM, 1978), Yo Miles! (Shanachie, 1998), and America (Tzadik), last year’s spirited duet with percussionist Jack DeJohnette—he presents a collection of compositions and performances worthy of comparison (in both their compositional innovation and technical mastery) to the finest recordings of John Coltrane and Miles Davis.

This is brilliant work.” – All Music Guide “The Golden Quartet is the closest thing to a standard jazz group that Wadada Leo Smith ever used to present his own music. …the music is lively, even explosive at time, yet still exquisitely balanced. …No other composer accommodates the independence of the individual and the unity of the ensemble in quite the way Smith does. …the collective sound always coheres into something purposeful and beautiful. Remarkably, the personalities and forces are kept in balance.”– Point of Departure “...a welcome reminder of Smith's continued importance in the continuum of creative improvised music.” – All About Jazz Lauded as “one of the most vital musicians on the planet” by Coda, Wadada Leo Smith is one of the most visionary, boldly original and artistically important figures in contemporary American jazz and free music, and one of the great trumpet players of our time.

Anthropogenic Moods: American Functional Music and Environmental Imaginaries A dissertation presented to the faculty of the College of Fine Arts of Ohio University In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy Joshua J. Ottum April 2016 © 2016 Joshua J. Ottum. All Rights Reserved. 2 This dissertation titled Anthropogenic Moods: American Functional Music and Environmental Imaginaries by JOSHUA J. OTTUM has been approved for Interdisciplinary Arts and the College of Fine Arts by Marina Peterson Associate Professor of Performance Studies Elizabeth Sayrs Interim Dean, College of Fine Arts 3 ABSTRACT OTTUM, JOSHUA J., Ph.D., April 2016, Interdisciplinary Arts Anthropogenic Moods: American Functional Music and Environmental Imaginaries Director of Dissertation: Marina Peterson This dissertation investigates how functional music, utilitarian commercial music composed to create moods, shapes environmental imaginaries in late twentieth- and early twenty-first century America. In particular, the study considers how functional music operates in specific media contexts to facilitate sonic identifications with the natural world that imbricate nature with modalities of contemporary capitalism. As human- driven changes to the planet have ushered in the Anthropocene, an investigation of the relationships between musical sound, moods, and environments will draw out the feelings and imaginaries of the era. In doing so, this study amplifies these attenuated sounds, aiming to open the conversation to new ways of listening in an age of increasing environmental fragility. 4 DEDICATION Dedicated to Vanessa and Baby Ottum 5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS This dissertation is the product of explicit and implicit guidance from family, friends, and faculty. I couldn’t have asked for a better advisor in Dr.
